Job Description of the Director of Education
Scope of Position: This position develops, oversees, and evaluates the Society’s educational and public programs for K-12 students, family audiences, and adult visitors and manages the day-to-day work of the Education Department staff. This position serves to meaningfully engage and cultivate new and long-term relationships with community groups and local audiences. This position reports to the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development and Community Engagement
● Develop, organize, and evaluate educational offerings that align with the Society’s mission and
interpretive goals.
● Collaborate with diverse community organizations and partners to design educational programs.
● Oversee the development and organization of feature and permanent exhibits.
● Work with the Director of Marketing to create content for the website, social media, and print
media.
● Evaluate program effectiveness and make data-driven decisions to enhance educational offerings
and outcomes.
● Represent the Society in local, state, and regional committees and/or boards as appropriate.
● Assist other historical societies.
Outreach to Schools and Educators
● Oversee educational programs for the region’s schools.
● Oversee educational materials to be used by the region’s teachers and general public.
● Oversee relationships with the region’s schools to encourage interns and service learning
opportunities.
● Oversee the management of student interns and volunteers associated with educational outreach
programs.
Exhibit Development and Interpretation
● Research and develop exhibition long-range themes.
● Collaborate with other departments and community members to develop and install temporary
and permanent exhibits.
● Ensure exhibits are accessible, engaging and aligned with educational standards for best practice.
● Evaluate program effectiveness and make data-driven decisions to enhance educational offerings.
● Develop interpretive materials, including signage, labels, and interactive elements, to enhance
visitor understanding and engagement.
Staff Supervision
● Supervise and mentor education department staff, volunteers, and interns providing guidance,
feedback, and professional development opportunities.
● Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that values creativity, innovation, and
continuous improvement.
Financial Management
● Prepare and manage an annual budget for educational activities that is aligned with organizational
goals and objectives.
● Collaborate with the Director of Development on funding opportunities.
Committee Work
● Participate in the Education Committee.
● Participate in relevant committees or working groups to contribute expertise and support
organizational initiatives.
● Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals and objectives.
Fulfill other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
● Master’s degree in historical administration or related field preferred.
● Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in history, education, or museum studies and at least 6 years
relevant work experience may be considered.
● Proficient in technology to support programs and interactive exhibits in museums.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail; planning and
organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated by a track record of building
relationships and expanding programs.
● Highly self-motivated and a team player.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director. Competitive compensation will include health insurance allowance and retirement savings plan eligibility. The salary for this role is $60,000 per year.
