Caring for Pets

Grades K-3.  Lesson.  In this 8-page colorful booklet, students learn about wants vs. needs of animals and humans and the responsibility involved in caring for pets.  This lesson introduces students to the role of humane societies in our community and how their work today compares to the work that Jennie B. Powers did 100 years ago as a humane society agent.  Works well with the primary source packet: Horses in our Community.  

Jennie B. Powers, a subject of one of Keene’s Walldog murals, was an agent for the Keene Humane Society (today’s Monadnock Humane Society) in the early part of the 20th century. Her jurisdiction included all of the Monadnock region of NH, Windham County, VT, and parts of northwestern MA.  She was also one of the first female deputy sheriff’s in New Hampshire.
