DESCRIPTION:Patriot Colonel Isaac Wyman- The War Years 1775 to 1783 \nTicket required: Historical Society of Cheshire County Events – Upcoming Activities and Tickets | Eventbrite \nIsaac Wyman fought in the French and Indian Wars as a British soldier\, stationed at wooden Fort Massachusetts in present day North Adams\, Massachusetts. He and his family moved to Keene in 1762\, where he was a member of the Keene militia. \nIn April of 1775\, he was asked to lead other local volunteers to support the patriots of Lexington and Concord\, Massachusetts. In saying yes\, he committed himself to 6 months of service which include the Battle of Bunker Hill. Asked again in 1776 to lead a regiment of militia men\, he answered in the affirmative. Brought up on charges at Mount Independence in 1776 he faced a court martial and served another 6 months in service before he retired from the military and came home to Keene. \nIsaac remained active in town affairs as the war eventually was won by the Patriots. Would you have said “Yes” and how did his service affect his family and his life? Come find a seat in his 1762 Tavern and learn more about this elder patriot. \nHSCC Interpreter and volunteer Becky Barton has lived in Cheshire County since 2005 when she earned her M.A. in Public History at SUNY Albany. She joined HSCC in 2013 and has been researching early Keene history and Isaac Wyman specifically. DESCRIPTION:Love and Loss After Wounded Knee Book Talk with Julie Dobrow \nWednesday\, March 18\, 2026\, 6 PM \n246 Main Street\, Keene NH \nFree event | registration is required   Love and Loss After Wounded Knee” Book Talk with author Julie Dobrow Tickets\, Wed\, Mar 18\, 2026 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite \nTufts University Professor Julie Dobrow shares the tumultuous and storied lives of Charles Eastman\, and his wife\, Elaine\, former operators of Camp Oahe in Munsonville\, NH. \nBook Description: \nLove and Loss After Wounded Knee traces Elaine and Charles’ lives from her humble beginnings on a farm in a remote corner of the Berkshires in Massachusetts and his\, chased from his home in a Sioux encampment in Minnesota to the woods of Manitoba after the US Army attacked the Sioux in 1862\, to their very unlikely meeting at Pine Ridge Agency in 1890 just ahead of the tragedy at Wounded Knee Creek. They would go on to marry. Their improbable interracial union would ultimately yield nineteen books; hundreds of articles\, lectures\, stories\, novels and poems; numerous posts in government agencies and civic organizations working on behalf of Native American rights; and six children. Charles would become one of the best known and most photographed Indians of his era; Elaine’s name remained well-known during her lifetime from her plentiful publications and advocacy on behalf of Native American education. Despite these metrics of success\, their marriage foundered. Eventually\, it dissolved. Over three decades together and the remainder of their lives\, apart\, the Eastmans navigated the complex boundaries of their individual and collective identities\, crossing into and out of Indian Country geographically\, personally and professionally. \nDrawing from extensive primary research done with archives in fifteen states and Washington D.C.\, two Canadian provinces\, the BBC and newspaper archives in England and Wales\, and one Native American college library on the Pine Ridge Reservation; the work of many Indigenous scholars as well as a host of other historical and literary secondary sources\, Love and Loss After Wounded Knee interprets the Eastmans’ lives through many lenses. At a time of profoundly unsettling controversies around race\, immigration\, and how we choose to label ourselves and others\, the story of Elaine Goodale and Charles Eastman gives a personal\, romantic lens into why it’s so difficult for people from different backgrounds to truly understand each other. But their story also suggests it’s important to try.

Revolutionary ideas have transformed how we live. Reaction to local and national events has spurred residents to speak out and take action. Reforms implemented to remedy injustice and inequality have improved the lives of those in our community. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County invites the public to visit its latest exhibit to contemplate how Cheshire County’s history has exemplified the ideas of revolution\, reaction\, and reform and what we can take from past events as lessons for our collective future.   \nThe Society’s exhibit is based on the 2026 National History Day theme\, Revolution\, Reaction\, Reform in History. National History Day\, an organization founded in 1974\, is a project-based learning program for students in grades 6-12 who conduct research\, build historical arguments\, and craft presentations to demonstrate their work.  \nDirector of Education Michelle Walker first proposed the exhibit as an opportunity to encourage more awareness of the national program in New Hampshire.  “As the former coordinator of Rhode Island’s National History Day program\, I have seen the benefits of engaging students in in-depth historical learning.  My hope is that Monadnock region educators\, interested in having students participate\, will collaborate with the Historical Society of Cheshire County to incorporate local history resources into future student projects.”   \nRevolution\, Reaction\, & Reform in Cheshire County provides the Historical Society with an opportunity to showcase more of its collections and local history stories.  Historical items from other local libraries\, historical societies\, and residents will be included as well.  Collectively\, the artifacts and archival documents displayed will range in topics from the 18th to 21st century\, including the history of local industries\, the American Revolution\, World War II\, and local reform and protest movements.

DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County proudly announces the opening of its featured summer exhibit\, “Our Story: The Art of Community Connections in the Monadnock Region.” This juried art show will officially open with a reception on Friday\, May 30\, 2025\, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.\nThe exhibit showcases the work of over 40 mixed media artists and artisans from across the region. Each artist has created works exploring their personal connections to the Monadnock region. The Society has once again partnered with guest curator Alicia Drakiotes of Marlborough\, NH.\n\n“This will be an exciting exhibition with not only 2D art pieces and photography\, but it will also include fiber work\, pottery\, glass works\, basketry\, metal work and more\,” said Drakiotes. “I am very excited to see this creative endeavor come together this fifth exhibition of artistic work at HSCC. The very first creative exhibit I assisted with was in 2013 the ’64 Miles’ exhibit which honored the Ashuelot River. This current endeavor salutes and incorporates the relationships of the creators with their interactions within the Monadnock Region.”\n\n“Our Story” invites visitors to experience the Monadnock Region through the eyes of its artists\, featuring works that range from depictions of local landmarks and events to abstract interpretations of community relationships. This drop-in exhibit will feature a variety of local caterpillar species\, and there will be plenty to see and touch! Educators from The Caterpillar Lab will teach you all about metamorphosis and tell incredible but true stories about the creatures’ strange and surprising adaptations. Some caterpillars may be camouflaged to look like twigs or snakes. Some may have stinging spines or brightly colored baubles. Check out some little-known native critters munching on their food plants right in front of you. Stay for a few minutes or for an hour; you’re sure to see something new! \nThis program coincides with the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s current exhibit Antioch University 60 Years in the Monadnock Region. Dr. Albert Johnston and his family\, a black family\, passed for white in order to work while living in Keene\, NH\, in the 1930s and 1940s. \nThis film won the 1949 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Screenplay. There will be a display of related Mason Library de Rochemont Special Collection materials in the lobby. \nSynopsis: Scott Carter (Mel Ferrer) is an African-American doctor who is eager to serve his community by working at a black hospital. However\, he encounters unexpected opposition when his light skin color results in him being mistaken for a white man. At the urging of his in-laws\, Carter and his similarly pale wife\, Marcia (Beatrice Pearson)\, begin to masquerade as white to more easily find their place (and to find work) in a fiercely segregated society.
