DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County proudly announces the opening of its featured summer exhibit\, “Our Story: The Art of Community Connections in the Monadnock Region.” This juried art show will officially open with a reception on Friday\, May 30\, 2025\, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.\nThe exhibit showcases the work of over 40 mixed media artists and artisans from across the region. Each artist has created works exploring their personal connections to the Monadnock region. The Society has once again partnered with guest curator Alicia Drakiotes of Marlborough\, NH.\n\n“This will be an exciting exhibition with not only 2D art pieces and photography\, but it will also include fiber work\, pottery\, glass works\, basketry\, metal work and more\,” said Drakiotes. “I am very excited to see this creative endeavor come together this fifth exhibition of artistic work at HSCC. The very first creative exhibit I assisted with was in 2013 the ’64 Miles’ exhibit which honored the Ashuelot River. This current endeavor salutes and incorporates the relationships of the creators with their interactions within the Monadnock Region.”\n\n“Our Story” invites visitors to experience the Monadnock Region through the eyes of its artists\, featuring works that range from depictions of local landmarks and events to abstract interpretations of community relationships. DESCRIPTION:Join the Caterpillar Lab and the Historical Society of Cheshire County in a free-exploration program and experience the incredible world of New England caterpillars! Join us Saturday\, May 3rd from 1-2:30 pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. This drop-in exhibit will feature a variety of local caterpillar species\, and there will be plenty to see and touch! Educators from The Caterpillar Lab will teach you all about metamorphosis and tell incredible but true stories about the creatures’ strange and surprising adaptations. Some caterpillars may be camouflaged to look like twigs or snakes. Some may have stinging spines or brightly colored baubles. Check out some little-known native critters munching on their food plants right in front of you. Stay for a few minutes or for an hour; you’re sure to see something new! \nThis program coincides with the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s current exhibit Antioch University 60 Years in the Monadnock Region. Dr. Albert Johnston and his family\, a black family\, passed for white in order to work while living in Keene\, NH\, in the 1930s and 1940s. \nThis film won the 1949 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Screenplay. There will be a display of related Mason Library de Rochemont Special Collection materials in the lobby. \nSynopsis: Scott Carter (Mel Ferrer) is an African-American doctor who is eager to serve his community by working at a black hospital. However\, he encounters unexpected opposition when his light skin color results in him being mistaken for a white man. At the urging of his in-laws\, Carter and his similarly pale wife\, Marcia (Beatrice Pearson)\, begin to masquerade as white to more easily find their place (and to find work) in a fiercely segregated society. DESCRIPTION:Opening Friday\, October 25\, 2024\nOne hundred and fifty years ago\, Keene\, New Hampshire\, became a city.  To honor this milestone\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will present Keene at 150\, a popup exhibit of enlarged photographs that reflect our city’s growth from the 1870s-2020s.  While taking in the sites\, visitors can watch the 2012 documentary “Reflections from the Mayor’s Office\,” a collection of interviews with six Keene mayors from the 1960s-2010s. \nOpening reception for the exhibit will be held on October 25\, 2024 from 4:30pm- 6:00 pm at the Historical Society headquarters\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH.  Refreshments will be served at this free public event at the Historical Society exhibit gallery at 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH. \nNo registration is required for this event. \nKeene 150 is sponsored by the City of Keene.

SUMMARY:Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning film Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone is a one-hour documentary from filmmaker Daniel J. White\, New Hampshire PBS\, and Rabbit Ear Films. On June 26\, 2024 at 7:00 pm\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will offer a free viewing of the film and host a Q/A with the film’s director Daniel White\, Historical Society director Alan Rumrill\, and Joyce Heywood\, Abenaki descendant with ties to the Monadnock region. Rumrill and Haywood also appear in the film. Filmed over 10 years on and around the mountain\, the documentary Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone uses live cinematography\, original music\, and historical archival imagery to tell the story of the original inhabitants of the region\, those who were inspired by the mountain- Mark Twain\, Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Henry David Thoreau\, Abbott Thayer\, and Amos Fortune and the hard work of those who work to preserve the mountain\, including money from children’s piggy banks\, to save “our” mountain. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Mountain as Muse Exhibit Open 9-12 pm \nFor almost 200 years artists have focused on the landscape of Mount Monadnock as a subject for the canvases.  For these artists\, Monadnock has been a source of inspiration for their art.  For some artists\, the mountain may have inspired a single painting; for some\, it was one of many subjects on which they focused\, and for a few\, such as William Preston Phelps\, it was their main subject and source of inspiration. This exhibit will share the art of painters\, the words of authors\, the sound of music\, and much more.  It will explore the lives of the artists and what their work tells us about the mountain\, the region\, and the artists themselves. \nThe summer exhibit\, “Mountain as Muse\,” will be open until August 30\, 2024. Admission to the exhibit is $5.00/ person or free for members of the Historical Society and youth under age 18.

Along the way\, the film explores the history of hydropower in New England\, the ongoing transition away from dirty fossil energy\, the importance of land conservation\, and how we all can be part of the solution as we face these challenges together. \nThis world premiere is both a “sneak peek” of the 27-minute film (which will debut on NHPBS later this April) and a community conversation: the film will be followed by a panel discussion\, including Bob King; the filmmakers from SALT Project; Catherine Koning\, professor of environmental science at Franklin Pierce University; and Jon Leibowitz\, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. \nA co-presentation of SALT Project and the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \n\nThe in-person preview is sold out however\, it can be viewed on NHPBS (Channel 11) on Thursday\, April 11\, at 10:00 pm\, Friday\, April 12\, at 4:00 pm\, and Sunday\, April 21\, at 11:00 am.
