DESCRIPTION:Learn amazing stories of Keene’s past through the Downtown’s Walldogs murals on this magical history tour!\n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the unveiling of a new historic marker recognizing Dr. Albert C. Johnston on August 15th followed by a tour of Keene’s epic Walldogs Murals. \nAbout the Walking Tour: 12:30-2:00pm \nEach mural tells a unique story of Keene’s rich history and culture\, including that of Dr. Albert Johnston\, who will be honored with a new historical marker on this day. \nStarting Point: 127 Washington Street\, Keene\, NH \nThe walking tour covers mostly flat terrain and is an easy walk suitable for most fitness levels. \nAbout the Historic Marker Event: 11:00am-12:00pm   Tour tickets \nThe Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire\, in partnership with the MDEIB Coalition and the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, is pleased to announce the installation of a Black Heritage Trail of NH Historic Marker in Keene\, New Hampshire\, honoring Dr. Albert C. Johnston. \nThe unveiling ceremony will take place on Saturday\, August 15th at 11 AM. The marker’s permanent location and unveiling celebration will be at 127 Washington Street\, Keene\, NH\, on the site of Dr. Johnston’s former home and medical office. Light refreshments will be served after the unveiling ceremony. This event is free and open to the public; all are welcome. \nDr. Albert C. Johnston\, an African American physician\, and his family lived as white in northern New England during the mid-20th century to overcome racial barriers that limited professional and social opportunities. After being denied a U.S. Navy commission during World War II because of his racial background\, Johnston publicly revealed his identity\, challenging assumptions about race in a predominantly white community. The family’s story became the basis for the bestselling book and 1949 film Lost Boundaries\, one of the earliest American films to confront racial passing and segregation. \nThe story brought national attention to issues of racism that were often overlooked in New England. The Johnstons’ story remains an important cultural touchstone in understanding race relations in New Hampshire and beyond. Today\, the site serves as a place of reflection\, education\, and community dialogue\, helping preserve and share an often untold chapter of New Hampshire’s Black history. Representatives from the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire\, the MDEIB Coalition\, and the Historical Society of Cheshire County will give brief remarks. Along with representatives of the City of Keene\, members of Dr. Johnston’s family will unveil the historic marker. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about Dr. Johnston here.

DESCRIPTION:Patriot Colonel Isaac Wyman- The War Years 1775 to 1783 \nTicket required: Historical Society of Cheshire County Events – 4 Upcoming Activities and Tickets | Eventbrite \nIsaac Wyman fought in the French and Indian Wars as a British soldier\, stationed at wooden Fort Massachusetts in present day North Adams\, Massachusetts. He and his family moved to Keene in 1762\, where he was a member of the Keene militia. \nIn April of 1775\, he was asked to lead other local volunteers to support the patriots of Lexington and Concord\, Massachusetts. In saying yes\, he committed himself to 6 months of service which include the Battle of Bunker Hill. Asked again in 1776 to lead a regiment of militia men\, he answered in the affirmative. Brought up on charges at Mount Independence in 1776 he faced a court martial and served another 6 months in service before he retired from the military and came home to Keene. \nIsaac remained active in town affairs as the war eventually was won by the Patriots. Would you have said “Yes” and how did his service affect his family and his life? Come find a seat in his 1762 Tavern and learn more about this elder patriot. \nHSCC Interpreter and volunteer Becky Barton has lived in Cheshire County since 2005 when she earned her M.A. in Public History at SUNY Albany. She joined HSCC in 2013 and has been researching early Keene history and Isaac Wyman specifically.
