SUMMARY:Paddling the North Branch
DESCRIPTION:Join adventurers Kathy Schillemat\, Office Manager of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Al Stoops for a moderately strenuous paddle down the North Branch of the Contoocook River from below the Robb Reservoir dam to North Branch Pond. With luck\, we may see herons\, osprey\, turtles\, beavers\, and maybe even otter or moose. In most places\, the paddling will be easy\, but our route will likely include a short portage over a rocky area\, so come prepared to get your feet wet. One or two vehicles will be available at the endpoint to shuttle paddlers back to their vehicles. \nMeet at 8 a.m. at the Robb Reservoir parking area off Keene-Concord Road in Stoddard. Back between noon and 1 p.m. Bring your own canoe or kayak\, paddles and PFDs for each person in your boat\, lunch\, and plenty of water – and come prepared for sun\, weather\, and biting insects. Space is limited\, and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County proudly announces the opening of its featured summer exhibit\, “Our Story: The Art of Community Connections in the Monadnock Region.” This juried art show will officially open with a reception on Friday\, May 30\, 2025\, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.\nThe exhibit showcases the work of over 40 mixed media artists and artisans from across the region. Each artist has created works exploring their personal connections to the Monadnock region. The Society has once again partnered with guest curator Alicia Drakiotes of Marlborough\, NH.\n\n“This will be an exciting exhibition with not only 2D art pieces and photography\, but it will also include fiber work\, pottery\, glass works\, basketry\, metal work and more\,” said Drakiotes. “I am very excited to see this creative endeavor come together this fifth exhibition of artistic work at HSCC. The very first creative exhibit I assisted with was in 2013 the ’64 Miles’ exhibit which honored the Ashuelot River. This current endeavor salutes and incorporates the relationships of the creators with their interactions within the Monadnock Region.”\n\n“Our Story” invites visitors to experience the Monadnock Region through the eyes of its artists\, featuring works that range from depictions of local landmarks and events to abstract interpretations of community relationships. DESCRIPTION:Join the Caterpillar Lab and the Historical Society of Cheshire County in a free-exploration program and experience the incredible world of New England caterpillars! Join us Saturday\, May 3rd from 1-2:30 pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. This drop-in exhibit will feature a variety of local caterpillar species\, and there will be plenty to see and touch! Educators from The Caterpillar Lab will teach you all about metamorphosis and tell incredible but true stories about the creatures’ strange and surprising adaptations. Some caterpillars may be camouflaged to look like twigs or snakes. Some may have stinging spines or brightly colored baubles. Check out some little-known native critters munching on their food plants right in front of you. Stay for a few minutes or for an hour; you’re sure to see something new! \nThis program coincides with the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s current exhibit Antioch University 60 Years in the Monadnock Region. Learn about the British American Civil war of 1775. \nProfessor Gregory Knouff of Keene State College will deliver a talk entitled “The Unhappy Disputes Now Subsiding” -or- “1775: A Year of Civil War.” His presentation will focus on the local region and New Hampshire in the first year of what became known as the American Revolution. The conflict in 1775 was understood by participants as a British American civil war. Contrary to popular assumptions of a unified cause\, colonial North Americans were deeply divided by political and social events of the year. The Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Monadnock Center for History and Culture will present a project update on Wednesday\, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. \nThe Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region project seeks to fill the gaps in our local history related to the region’s Black residents. Using primary source documents\, project researchers have traced the life stories of nearly 500 individuals and families that called the region home between 1730 and 1930. \nThis online program\, hosted by Monadnock Center director and project co-leader Michelle Stahl\, will present several of these life stories as well as a look at the project’s website BIPOCMonadnock.org. \nThe program is free. He gained wealth in his adopted state of Tennessee\, only to lose it all when the Civil War began because he supported the Union.
