DESCRIPTION:Join the Caterpillar Lab and the Historical Society of Cheshire County in a free-exploration program and experience the incredible world of New England caterpillars! Join us Saturday\, May 3rd from 1-2:30 pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. This drop-in exhibit will feature a variety of local caterpillar species\, and there will be plenty to see and touch! Educators from The Caterpillar Lab will teach you all about metamorphosis and tell incredible but true stories about the creatures’ strange and surprising adaptations. Some caterpillars may be camouflaged to look like twigs or snakes. Some may have stinging spines or brightly colored baubles. Check out some little-known native critters munching on their food plants right in front of you. Stay for a few minutes or for an hour; you’re sure to see something new! \nThis program coincides with the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s current exhibit Antioch University 60 Years in the Monadnock Region. It is sponsored by Edward Jones – Al Stroshine\, David Therrien\, Scot Ward\, & Ely Thayer\, Ingram Construction\, and the Putnam Foundation \nAll are welcome\, this event is free and open to the public. Learn about the British American Civil war of 1775. \nProfessor Gregory Knouff of Keene State College will deliver a talk entitled “The Unhappy Disputes Now Subsiding” -or- “1775: A Year of Civil War.” His presentation will focus on the local region and New Hampshire in the first year of what became known as the American Revolution. The conflict in 1775 was understood by participants as a British American civil war. Contrary to popular assumptions of a unified cause\, colonial North Americans were deeply divided by political and social events of the year. DESCRIPTION:Granny D Birthday Celebration\n\n\n\nPlease join us for the 2025 Granny D Birthday Celebration at Mason Library\, Keene State College on January 24\, 2025 at 1pm. \nNote that there will be limited space available for in-person\, you may also RSVP for the Zoom option HERE. \nWe will gather to celebrate the birthdate of our legendary founder Doris “Granny D” Haddock.  On January 1st\, 1999\, at the age of 89\, Granny D embarked on her walk from Pasadena\, CA to advocate for campaign finance reform.  Granny D walked over 1\,000 miles through the desert\, climbed the Appalachian Mountains through blizzards\, and skied over 100 miles after a historic snowstorm covered the roads. Finally\, after 14 months and 3\,200 miles\, Haddock made it to Washington\, DC\, where over 2\,000 supporters and several dozen members of congress waited. It took another two years for the McCain/Feingold bill to pass\, during which time Doris was arrested twice during demonstrations.   We continue to honor her with annual walks in the Monadnock and Seacoast regions. \nWe’ll be joined by this impressive list of speakers: \n\nKeene Mayor Jay Kahn\nJenna Carroll\, Exec. SUMMARY:Patriotic Speeches & Pompous Declamations: New Hampshire in the 1774 Crisis of Atlantic Empire
DESCRIPTION:This talk will address the larger Atlantic World context of the explosive political crisis in parts of British North America in the year 1774 in the wake of resistance to the Tea Act. Questions about the future of independent Indigenous peoples\, African Atlantic enslavement\, and the very constitution of government itself all threatened to engulf New Hampshire in civil war and revolution. In March of 1774\, the town of Hinsdale declared in its meeting that “patriotic speeches and pompous declamations” by self-interested demagogues threatened good order and “true personal liberty.” Yet\, by December 1774\, elements of New Hampshire militias stormed the British post of Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth and took down the Union Jack. A broader global context drove many people at the local level to develop new revolutionary bodies that eventually overturned the existing Royal government of provincial New Hampshire. 1774 was a critical year for this transition. \nGregory Knouff received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in early American history. He is Professor of History at Keene State College where he teaches courses in the Atlantic World\, the American Revolution\, Native North American History\, the African Atlantic\, and other courses on North America\, 1500-1800.
