DESCRIPTION:Part of Keene State College’s Perspectives in Diverse Classical Music salon series\, the public is invited to bring a bag lunch while listening to music. Keene State student soprano\, Iris Rojas\, presents a short lecture and recital that will showcase works by African-American composers Florence Price\, Moses Hogan and Hall Johnson\, in addition to composers from the European standard canon of classical music\, including Puccini and Bizet. Iris Rojas will give a short PowerPoint presentation for each musical selection and will offer personal anecdotes about several of the songs she has chosen to present. SUMMARY:Patriotic Speeches & Pompous Declamations: New Hampshire in the 1774 Crisis of Atlantic Empire
DESCRIPTION:This talk will address the larger Atlantic World context of the explosive political crisis in parts of British North America in the year 1774 in the wake of resistance to the Tea Act. Questions about the future of independent Indigenous peoples\, African Atlantic enslavement\, and the very constitution of government itself all threatened to engulf New Hampshire in civil war and revolution. In March of 1774\, the town of Hinsdale declared in its meeting that “patriotic speeches and pompous declamations” by self-interested demagogues threatened good order and “true personal liberty.” Yet\, by December 1774\, elements of New Hampshire militias stormed the British post of Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth and took down the Union Jack. A broader global context drove many people at the local level to develop new revolutionary bodies that eventually overturned the existing Royal government of provincial New Hampshire. 1774 was a critical year for this transition. \nGregory Knouff received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in early American history. He is Professor of History at Keene State College where he teaches courses in the Atlantic World\, the American Revolution\, Native North American History\, the African Atlantic\, and other courses on North America\, 1500-1800. He is the author of The Soldiers’ Revolution: Pennsylvanians in Arms and the Forging of Early American Identity\, “’That Abundant Infamous Roach’: Breed and Ruth Batcheller\, Moderate Loyalism\, Language\, and Domestic Power in Revolutionary New Hampshire\,” in Rebecca Brannon\, ed.\, The Consequences of Loyalism\, “Seductive Sedition: New Hampshire Loyalists’ Experiences and Memories of the American Revolutionary Wars” in Karen Hagemann\, ed.\, War\, Demobilization\, and Memory: The Legacy of War in the Age of Transatlantic Revolutions\, and “White Men in Arms: Concepts of Citizenship and Masculinity in Revolutionary America\,” in Anna Clark\, ed.\, Representing Masculinity: Male Citizenship in Modern Western Culture\, among other publications. \nClick here to register to attend program via zoom\nClick here to register to attend program in person

DESCRIPTION:Opening Friday\, October 25\, 2024\nOne hundred and fifty years ago\, Keene\, New Hampshire\, became a city.  To honor this milestone\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will present Keene at 150\, a popup exhibit of enlarged photographs that reflect our city’s growth from the 1870s-2020s.  While taking in the sites\, visitors can watch the 2012 documentary “Reflections from the Mayor’s Office\,” a collection of interviews with six Keene mayors from the 1960s-2010s. \nOpening reception for the exhibit will be held on October 25\, 2024 from 4:30pm- 6:00 pm at the Historical Society headquarters\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH.  Refreshments will be served at this free public event at the Historical Society exhibit gallery at 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH. \nNo registration is required for this event. \nKeene 150 is sponsored by the City of Keene.

This will be followed by a story-sharing event\, where attendees can share their own stories and experiences in an open and supportive environment. Members of the Monadnock Region’s LGBTQIA+ community are encouraged to attend and learn more about participating in the Voices of Pride oral history project. This initiative aims to preserve the voices and stories of individuals within our community\, providing a platform for them to share their unique experiences\, histories\, and memories.
