DESCRIPTION:The award-winning film Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone is a one-hour documentary from filmmaker Daniel J. White\, New Hampshire PBS\, and Rabbit Ear Films. On June 26\, 2024 at 7:00 pm\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will offer a free viewing of the film and host a Q/A with the film’s director Daniel White\, Historical Society director Alan Rumrill\, and Joyce Heywood\, Abenaki descendant with ties to the Monadnock region. Rumrill and Haywood also appear in the film. Filmed over 10 years on and around the mountain\, the documentary Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone uses live cinematography\, original music\, and historical archival imagery to tell the story of the original inhabitants of the region\, those who were inspired by the mountain- Mark Twain\, Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Henry David Thoreau\, Abbott Thayer\, and Amos Fortune and the hard work of those who work to preserve the mountain\, including money from children’s piggy banks\, to save “our” mountain. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:  \nBIPOC Monadnock launches Wednesday\, June 18\, 2024. www.bipocmonadnock.org \nExplore a diverse history of New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region between the 1730s and 1930s with the launch of a new website\, BIPOCMonadnock.org\, on June 19. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County (Keene) and Monadnock Center for History and Culture (Peterborough) are ready to share five years of work recovering the stories of BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color) individuals and families in southwest New Hampshire. “What began as a citizen archivist research initiative to recover Black history in the Monadnock Region will now become accessible to the general public in time for Juneteenth 2024\,” announced project co-director Jennifer Carroll. \nAs nonprofit educational organizations\, the Historical Society and Monadnock Center use primary and secondary sources to communicate the history of the region. The documents\, photographs\, and artifacts preserved in their archives have led to hundreds of talks\, workshops\, walking tours\, exhibits\, school resources\, and publications that have illuminated the past. \nBut there are gaps in the region’s historical collections. There are stories missing from local history\, memories not preserved. The Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region project was initiated to address those absences. Over 50 community volunteers\, called “citizen archivists\,” assisted the museums in collecting and interpreting primary sources related to Africans\, African-Americans\, and other persons of color who resided in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire between the 1730 and 1930. The citizen archivists researched source materials in local\, state\, regional\, and national repositories. \nThe resulting BIPOC Monadnock website showcases biographies of individuals and families of color\, along with genealogical information and bibliographic sources. “This kind of research is painstaking and time consuming\,” said project co-director Michelle Stahl. “The volunteer researchers have put in hundreds of hours and their work made the project possible. It has been amazing to see what the citizen archivists have uncovered so far and we have really just scratched the surface.” The website portion of the project was made possible thanks to support from the Putnam Foundation and C&S Wholesale Grocers. \nThe Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region research is ongoing. Specialized teams of historical researchers continue to pore over primary source materials located in museums\, town halls\, and libraries throughout New England. “I’m very excited about what’s to come\,” Carroll explained. “We’re already noticing interesting patterns in our research and we know that our findings are going to add a new dimension to what we thought we knew about Black history in rural New England.” \nCarroll and Stahl are looking to the future. “Museums\, historical societies and individuals across New England are recovering BIPOC history in their communities\,” Stahl noted. “The BIPOC Monadnock website provides an opportunity to share what we know right now in the hopes of creating connections to others doing this work. The most important part of the project will happen when we can pull together our research with the work of others throughout New England. This is just the beginning.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Since 1927 the Historical Society of Cheshire County has been connecting people with their own local history stories. The Historical Society serves as a hub for people to connect through history\, art\, culture\, and the environment through their own lens and personal experience. \nIn 2024\, we will be offering some exciting programs. For example\, check out our blockbuster exhibit this summer titled “Mountain as Muse” featuring artwork from some of the greatest artists who have been inspired by Mount Monadnock over the past 200 years. And in the fall\, our exhibit will feature the history of theaters in the region. \nWe are making great progress on our project recovering the Black history of towns in the Monadnock region\, and we have installed a sound studio to collect oral history such as stories about the LGBTQ+ history of the region. \nWe’re looking forward to these and over 100 other programs this year such as lectures\, walking tours\, a summer camp\, films\, Monadnock Moments\, and more. \nWith your support we will continue to help people find their place in history. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Mountain as Muse Exhibit Open 9-12 pm \nFor almost 200 years artists have focused on the landscape of Mount Monadnock as a subject for the canvases.  For these artists\, Monadnock has been a source of inspiration for their art.  For some artists\, the mountain may have inspired a single painting; for some\, it was one of many subjects on which they focused\, and for a few\, such as William Preston Phelps\, it was their main subject and source of inspiration. This exhibit will share the art of painters\, the words of authors\, the sound of music\, and much more.  It will explore the lives of the artists and what their work tells us about the mountain\, the region\, and the artists themselves. \nThe summer exhibit\, “Mountain as Muse\,” will be open until August 30\, 2024. Admission to the exhibit is $5.00/ person or free for members of the Historical Society and youth under age 18.

Following a brief business meeting\, Matthew will speak on the topic of “Keene\, NH: A Deep Local History.” Matthew describes his presentation as “an exploration of the “big picture history” of both Keene and the Monadnock region more generally\, with special emphasis on natural history (landscape\, flora\, and fauna)\, human history (from Abenaki settlements to present)\, and literary/artistic history (including Thoreau\, Thayer\, Twain\, and Cather). As William Faulkner once put it\, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’\nMatthew Myer Boulton is a writer and filmmaker based in Keene\, New Hampshire. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School and seminaries in New England and the Midwest. SALT Project\, the Emmy-winning production company he runs with his wife\, Elizabeth Myer\, has made films about Jennie Powers\, nighttime bird migration\, the art history of the White Mountains\, and New England hydropower. \nFollowing Matthew’s presentation\, refreshments will be served. \n

SUMMARY:Lunch/Learn: Short Films on Local History
DESCRIPTION:This spring Keene State College students spent the semester learning how to use digital storytelling as a tool to present their research. In a special honors course\, students conducted oral histories\, organized\, and conducted interviews\, visited archives\, and researched topics that were rooted in the local. The topics the students chose were diverse and range from personal projects about family lineages\, real life Gatsby figures\, razed neighborhoods\, the history of local transit systems\, the Keene Public Library and cultural history hidden in plain sight. The students will present their short video projects to the public on Monday\, April 29\, 2024 at 12:00pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. The public is invited to bring a lunch and listen to some great digital storytelling. \nRails\, Roads\, and Roundabouts\nby Ryan Hueber\, 14min \nKeene is a town with a long history. In the 1800s\, railroads helped to turn this rural community into the region’s industrial powerhouse. The role of trains in Keene’s development is well known. What most people don’t know\, though\, is that the town once had a tram network and a strong bus service. In this documentary\, I detail the history of public transportation and transit infrastructure in Keene\, from the Keene Electric Railway to the City Express. \nThe Neighborhood Before Us\nBy Hayley Townsend\, 6min \nBefore Butler Ct was home to several upperclassmen dorms and the infamous Carle Hall\, it was a neighborhood with rich Italian culture. But when the college needed to meet enrolment demands in the late 1960s\, families in the neighborhood were forced to move due to Eminent Domain\, the right of the government to take private property for public use subject to payment of just compensation effect by the filling of a Declaration with the Board. In this film\, Victor Dintino and his family reminisce on the times spent in neighborhood gardens\, attending places on the campus\, and watching the college expand before their forced relocation. \n  \nThe Eliot Building: A Journey Through Time\nBy Peter St. Germain\, 6min \nThe beloved Eliot Center of Keene State College is known to have a rich history. While most students know some of the basic history\, some may or may not know the full history. This film explores the unknown history of the Eliot Center at Keene State College. \nMadame Sherri: New Hampshire’s Great Gatsby\nBy Eleanor Warinner\, 7min \nA New York City Parisian born costume designer moved to Chesterfield\, New Hampshire in 1930\, where she built a castle for the sole purpose of hosting lavish parties. Scandalizing residents\, she drove around town in her Packard touring car\, wearing a fur coat and chain smoking. However\, like Gatsby\, this socialite crashed and burned\, dying a ward of the state with a castle in ruins. \nThrough Their Eyes: Three Generations of German Women\nBy Max Frisbee\, 14min \nThese are the stories of three German women in the same lineage over three generations. They grew up during different periods of time in East Germany\, and they tell stories of their childhoods and difficulties. Gisela\, born in 1936\, lived through the Second World War and experienced its aftermath. While the war did not directly impact her\, she speaks of her childhood in Germany. Susanne\, born in 1956\, speaks of her early childhood and how the GDR influenced her life\, and the difficulties she faced with the Stasi and her attempt to cross the border. Katrin\, born in 1976\, also speaks of her early childhood\, her experiences\, and her memories of East Germany. These stories are compiled to compare their experiences and deliver an insight into the lives and memories of these women. \n  \nThe Battlefront on the Frontier\nBy Giovanni Vattuone\, 5min \nThe interest in this project comes from the historical aspect of the town and the historic forts and battles that took place in Cheshire County. This project is a tour through the history of the major generals and people who were a part of the founding of the fort at #4. \n  \nThird Space: The Evolution of the Keene Public Library\nBy Cameron Rockwell\, 12min \nThe history of the Keene Public library begins in the late 1700s\, and throughout the decades has continued to grow and evolve. It has gone through many locations\, renovations\, librarians\, trustees\, and overall changes before it has reached the library on West Street that we know today. Despite the various renovations it has undergone and countless resources it has acquired\, it’s not the building and books that make up the library\, but the surrounding community that keeps the library alive. \n\nClick here to register.

He will share the story of the town’s contentious Revolutionary War history and trace the rise\, fall\, and rebirth of the community as it focused on agriculture\, industry\, tourism\, and land conservation over the past 250 years. \nPartnership with the Stoddard Historical Society and the Historical Society of Cheshire County \n  \nAlan’s new book Stoddard is available through this special offer – pre-publication offer now through April 1\, 2024. $19.99 \nThe town of Stoddard\, located in the Monadnock Region of southwest New Hampshire\, is blessed with a handsomely severe landscape of forests\, lakes\, and hills admired for their natural beauty. Hundreds of farm families settled in the town between 1768 and 1820. When the rock-laden and thin-soiled farms failed in the mid-1800s\, the town turned to industry to survive. An extensive woodenware industry and a nationally known glass industry also failed by the early 20th century and the town’s population toppled by more than 90 percent. The introduction of the automobile revived the community\, allowing families to easily visit the town’s numerous lakes and ponds as Stoddard became a tourist destination in the 20th century. Alan Rumrill has used Stoddard’s rich photographic record to tell the story of the town’s early success\, desperate decline\, and 20th century rebirth in his new book Images of America: Stoddard. This 128-page volume contains more than 200 photos\, detailed captions\, and a brief history of the community. SUMMARY:Recovering Black History: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Virtual event \nApril 17\, 2024 | 7:00 PM \nClick here to register \nin partnership with Partnership of Historic Bostons\, Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and the Monadnock Center for History and Culture \nThe overflowing multitude of documents\, photographs and artifacts in the archives of two local history societies in southwestern New Hampshire have\, over the years\, enabled hundreds\, if not thousands\, of talks\, workshops\, walking tours\, exhibitions\, schools resources and publications . \nBut there are stories missing from this local history – memories not preserved. \nThat’s why two dynamic local historians and their equally dynamic historical societies – Jennifer Carroll\, director of education at the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Michelle Stahl\, executive director of the Monadnock Center for History and Culture – established the groundbreaking project Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region. \nWith a group of volunteer researchers – aka Citizen Archivists – Michelle and Jennifer have pieced together Black history in the region from 1730-1930. Painstakingly examining primary and secondary sources\, they’ve developed a systematic\, uniform research method that enables researchers to work simultaneously and assemble this vital information in a single central spreadsheet. This system ensures that no sources are overlooked\, and that source citations are linked with the information found within a given resource. \nMore than that\, the project demonstrates that what was thought to be an almost wholly white population in southern New Hampshire was actually the home of a vibrant Black community. \nHow can you uncover the true history of your town? This workshop\, led by Michelle and Jennifer\, will: \n\nintroduce you to the benefits of a clear research system\nshow you the sources (both online and in person) that will be essential to your research\, and\nexplain how to marshal the power of the many by using volunteer researchers – that is\, your own Citizen Archivists.\n\nMichelle and Jennifer will also share their successes (and the pitfalls!) and answer your questions about researching Black history in rural New England. \nRegister now for this invaluable\, wholly original workshop! You never know – you might be able to un-erase history and reveal a more truthful picture of New England. \nJennifer Carroll has been managing historical societies and museums in New England for over 25 years. She holds a master of arts degree in historical administration from Eastern Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree in history and women’s studies from the University of New Hampshire. Carroll has worked as a curator and executive director of museums\, and currently serves as the director of education at the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene\, New Hampshire\, where she coordinates over 150 educational programs per year. She is the 2023 recipient of the Keene State College Outstanding Woman of New Hampshire award\, a 2023 NATAS/New England Emmy Award nominee as writer for the short historical film\, Jennie B. Powers: The Woman Who Dares\, and the Keene Sentinel newspaper’s Extraordinary Women of the Monadnock Region award in 2017. Jennifer lives in West Swanzey\, NH\, with her husband and two daughters. \nMichelle Stahl has worked in New England museums and historical societies since 1995 serving as a cataloger\, curator\, program director\, and administrator. Since 2001\, she has been the executive director of the Monadnock Center for History and Culture\, a local history museum and archives in Peterborough\, New Hampshire. Stahl holds a bachelor’s degree in the history of art from Smith College\, where she was an Ada Comstock Scholar. Her research interests include New England history and art\, American folk art and the history of women. DESCRIPTION:Nov. 1\, 2023 – Apr. 20\, 2024 \nSigns surround us in our daily lives and have been doing so for over 5\,000 years. They sell us products\, warn us of impending danger\, promote individuals and businesses\, instruct us with tasks\, and direct us as to which way to go.  The Historical Society of Cheshire County invites you to reflect on the significance of over 70 signs from our region’s past. \nIn an exhibit entitled Signs of the Times\, visitors can explore the ways in which an artifact\, like a sign\, has the power to disclose secrets about the past.  The exhibit hopes to enhance one’s understanding of how cultural shifts and technological advances have impacted signage and its use in Cheshire County over time. \nExhibit hours are Tuesday – Friday 9-4 Wednesday until 8 pm and the first and third Saturday of the month 9-12 pm \nFree and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 12th\, 2024. 12pm-1pm. \nLunch & Learn: Black History in Keene. NH \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH \nNew findings on Keene’s Black history will be presented by a Boston-based research team as part of the “Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region” initiative. On Friday\, April 12\, 2024\, at 12:00pm\, the public is invited to bring a bag lunch to the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street in Keene for this one-hour program. Presentations will be made by World History PhD student Emily Boyer as well as Public History Master’s students Grace Rooney and Ellie Witham. This event is being offered as a hybrid program. \nTo attend online register via Zoom link\, click here.  \nTo attend in person register via Eventbrite click here. \nFor one year\, student researchers\, led by Dr. Kabria Baumgartner of Northeastern University\, have been tracing the history of African Americans in Keene from the 1730s to the 1910s. Their work was made possible thanks to a collaboration with the Historical Society\, Keene Heritage Commission\, and a grant from the NH Division of Historic Resources. \nThe Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region is a citizen-archivist project led by Jennifer Carroll of the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene and Michelle Stahl of the Monadnock Center for History and Culture in Peterborough. \nDr. Kabria Baumgartner is an associate professor of history and Africana Studies at Northeastern University in Boston and a historian of the nineteenth-century United States\, specializing in the history of slavery and abolition in New England\, the history of education\, and African American women’s and gender history. \nThe Keene Heritage Commission is an advisory and review commission of the City of Keene which is responsible for inventorying\, promoting and actively seeking protection and preservation of Keene’s resources that are valued for their historic\, cultural\, aesthetic\, archeological and community significance. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Signs of the Times exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Nov. 1\, 2023 – Apr. 19\, 2024 \nSigns surround us in our daily lives and have been doing so for over 5\,000 years. They sell us products\, warn us of impending danger\, promote individuals and businesses\, instruct us with tasks\, and direct us as to which way to go.  The Historical Society of Cheshire County invites you to reflect on the significance of over 70 signs from our region’s past. \nIn an exhibit entitled Signs of the Times\, visitors can explore the ways in which an artifact\, like a sign\, has the power to disclose secrets about the past.  The exhibit hopes to enhance one’s understanding of how cultural shifts and technological advances have impacted signage and its use in Cheshire County over time. \nExhibit hours are Tuesday – Friday 9-4 Wednesday until 8 pm and the first and third Saturday of the month 9-12 pm \nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event with Alan F. Rumrill
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 6\, 2024\, 10-12 pm \nImages of America Series Stoddard by Alan F\, Rumrill \nThe town of Stoddard\, located in the Monadnock Region of southwest New Hampshire\, is blessed with a handsomely severe landscape of forests\, lakes\, and hills admired for their natural beauty. Hundreds of farm families settled in the town between 1768 and 1820. When the rock-laden and thin-soiled farms failed in the mid-1800s\, the town turned to industry to survive. An extensive woodenware industry and a nationally known glass industry also failed by the early 20th century and the town’s population toppled by more than 90 percent. The introduction of the automobile revived the community\, allowing families to easily visit the town’s numerous lakes and ponds as Stoddard became a tourist destination in the 20th century. Alan Rumrill has used Stoddard’s rich photographic record to tell the story of the town’s early success\, desperate decline\, and 20th century rebirth in his new book Images of America: Stoddard. This 128-page volume contains more than 200 photos\, detailed captions\, and a brief history of the community. These photos illustrate the town’s history\, natural beauty\, and unaltered historic character. Rumrill is a native of Stoddard\, where his family has lived since 1770. Along the way\, the film explores the history of hydropower in New England\, the ongoing transition away from dirty fossil energy\, the importance of land conservation\, and how we all can be part of the solution as we face these challenges together. \nThis world premiere is both a “sneak peek” of the 27-minute film (which will debut on NHPBS later this April) and a community conversation: the film will be followed by a panel discussion\, including Bob King; the filmmakers from SALT Project; Catherine Koning\, professor of environmental science at Franklin Pierce University; and Jon Leibowitz\, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. \nA co-presentation of SALT Project and the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \n\nThe in-person preview is sold out however\, it can be viewed on NHPBS (Channel 11) on Thursday\, April 11\, at 10:00 pm\, Friday\, April 12\, at 4:00 pm\, and Sunday\, April 21\, at 11:00 am.
