NH \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH \nNew findings on Keene’s Black history will be presented by a Boston-based research team as part of the “Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region” initiative. On Friday\, April 12\, 2024\, at 12:00pm\, the public is invited to bring a bag lunch to the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street in Keene for this one-hour program. Presentations will be made by World History PhD student Emily Boyer as well as Public History Master’s students Grace Rooney and Ellie Witham. This event is being offered as a hybrid program. \nTo attend online register via Zoom link\, click here.  \nTo attend in person register via Eventbrite click here. \nFor one year\, student researchers\, led by Dr. Kabria Baumgartner of Northeastern University\, have been tracing the history of African Americans in Keene from the 1730s to the 1910s. Their work was made possible thanks to a collaboration with the Historical Society\, Keene Heritage Commission\, and a grant from the NH Division of Historic Resources. \nThe Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region is a citizen-archivist project led by Jennifer Carroll of the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene and Michelle Stahl of the Monadnock Center for History and Culture in Peterborough. \nDr. Kabria Baumgartner is an associate professor of history and Africana Studies at Northeastern University in Boston and a historian of the nineteenth-century United States\, specializing in the history of slavery and abolition in New England\, the history of education\, and African American women’s and gender history. \nThe Keene Heritage Commission is an advisory and review commission of the City of Keene which is responsible for inventorying\, promoting and actively seeking protection and preservation of Keene’s resources that are valued for their historic\, cultural\, aesthetic\, archeological and community significance. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 6\, 2024\, 10-12 pm \nImages of America Series Stoddard by Alan F\, Rumrill \nThe town of Stoddard\, located in the Monadnock Region of southwest New Hampshire\, is blessed with a handsomely severe landscape of forests\, lakes\, and hills admired for their natural beauty. Hundreds of farm families settled in the town between 1768 and 1820. When the rock-laden and thin-soiled farms failed in the mid-1800s\, the town turned to industry to survive. An extensive woodenware industry and a nationally known glass industry also failed by the early 20th century and the town’s population toppled by more than 90 percent. The introduction of the automobile revived the community\, allowing families to easily visit the town’s numerous lakes and ponds as Stoddard became a tourist destination in the 20th century. Alan Rumrill has used Stoddard’s rich photographic record to tell the story of the town’s early success\, desperate decline\, and 20th century rebirth in his new book Images of America: Stoddard. This 128-page volume contains more than 200 photos\, detailed captions\, and a brief history of the community. These photos illustrate the town’s history\, natural beauty\, and unaltered historic character. Rumrill is a native of Stoddard\, where his family has lived since 1770. SUMMARY:Remembering the Brooks Family: Recovering Black History in New England- with Gail Golec
DESCRIPTION:March 27\, 2024  \nOnline presentation 7-8:30 pm Registration is required…click here to register. \nWhat happens when people are made invisible? How can they be brought back to life\, at least in historical memory? \nArchaeologist Gail Golec explores the burial grounds of southern New Hampshire and uncovers the powerful story of the Brooks family of Walpole\, New Hampshire\, and Westminster\, Vermont – a Black family whose members lived and worked across a region normally considered entirely white. \nThe story centres on the 18th century\, but their story begins in the 17th century\, when Anglo-American families from Middleton\, Connecticut\, settled in the Middle Connecticut River Valley\, and brought with them both enslaved and free Black people. The large\, extended Brooks family lived in communities on both sides of the river for at least four generations. \nJoin Gail in her hunt to find out the history of this important Black family through archives\, gravestones\, church papers and more. The Brooks family is one of many researched through the Recovering Black History project organized by the Historical Society of Cheshire County (Keene\, NH) and the Monadnock Center for History and Culture (Peterborough\, NH). As well as the family story\, Gail will highlight the collaboration between local historical societies\, Brooks family descendants and the dozens of citizen archivists who made this newly revealed history possible. \nRemembering the Brooks Family will be followed by a seminar in how to research the hidden stories in your community\, led by the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Monadnock Historic Research Center. Date TBC. \nGail Golec has been a professional archaeologist for over 20 years\, working primarily in the Middle Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. Currently\, she is a project archaeologist with Monadnock Archaeological Consulting\, LLC. She also writes and produces a history podcast called The Secret Life of Death https://www.thesecretlifeofdeath.com/\, discussing the life and times of regular\, often ignored\, people through the lens of historic New England cemeteries. DESCRIPTION:Pre-publication offer now through April 1\, 2024. $19.99 \nThe town of Stoddard\, located in the Monadnock Region of southwest New Hampshire\, is blessed with a handsomely severe landscape of forests\, lakes\, and hills admired for their natural beauty. Hundreds of farm families settled in the town between 1768 and 1820. When the rock-laden and thin-soiled farms failed in the mid-1800s\, the town turned to industry to survive. An extensive woodenware industry and a nationally known glass industry also failed by the early 20th century and the town’s population toppled by more than 90 percent. The introduction of the automobile revived the community\, allowing families to easily visit the town’s numerous lakes and ponds as Stoddard became a tourist destination in the 20th century. Alan Rumrill has used Stoddard’s rich photographic record to tell the story of the town’s early success\, desperate decline\, and 20th century rebirth in his new book Images of America: Stoddard. This 128-page volume contains more than 200 photos\, detailed captions\, and a brief history of the community. These photos illustrate the town’s history\, natural beauty\, and unaltered historic character. Rumrill is a native of Stoddard\, where his family has lived since 1770.
