DESCRIPTION:Cathedral of the Pines schedules art fundraiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Niemi\, left\, participating artist in the Cathedral of the Pines’ “Art Day-Mountain as Muse” fundraising event\, points out painting details to cathedral Executive Director Michelle Lowe and trustee Jerry Branch. COURTESY PHOTO \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Cathedral of the Pines will hold “Art Day-Mountain as Muse\,” a plein air art day fundraiser\, Friday\, July 14. \n“Plein air” is a French term which means creating entire finished paintings outdoors \n“We are very excited to offer ‘Art Day-Mountain as Muse\,’” stated Cathedral of the Pines Executive Director Michelle Lowe. “Alicia Drakiotes\, a well-known Monadnock artist\, is coordinating the participation of accomplished regional artists in this new annual fundraiser event. The artists will select spots on the cathedral grounds to paint\, sketch and photograph beautiful scenic views of Mount Monadnock\, gardens and flowers.” \nThe artists will paint from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch provided at noon. Their completed art work will then be displayed for sale in the Hilltop House later in the day. The public viewing and sale of the newly created artwork begins at 5 p.m. Admission to the viewing and wine and cheese reception is $10. Cathedral of the Pines will receive 25 percent of all art sales. \nAt 6 p.m.\, Alan Rumrill\, executive director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, will present an illustrated program titled “Mountain as Muse: The Artists who Painted Mt. Monadnock.” In his presentation\, Rumrill will discuss painters and what their art tells about the mountain and the region. \nRain date for the event is Friday\, July 28. SUMMARY:A Dakota Summer Story: Camping at Oahe with the Eastman Family
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County invites the public to a presentation on Wednesday\, July 12th at 6:30 pm on the outdoor education created by Charles (Ohiyesa) Eastman—Dakota physician\, author\, and activist. The Eastman family founded Camp Oahe in 1916 in Stoddard\, NH as a summer camp for girls. Guest lecturer\, Professor Kiara Vigil of Amherst College will provide new insights into the “playing Indian” phenomenon that was a large part of an American youth wilderness movement. For the Eastmans\, “Indian play” served a broader pedagogical and political purpose. Their camp sought to teach young white girls about the values of Dakota teachings to recast Indian culture. Professor Vigil’s lecture provides an analysis of early twentieth-century gender roles\, dynamics\, and expectations related to Indian people to reveal another dimension of outdoor education in shaping American attitudes toward identity\, family\, childhood\, and nation. \nSeating is limited please register to attend this event. SUMMARY:Smallpox\, the Colonial Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the effect that smallpox had on Keene residents in the 18th century with historian and professional storyteller Becky Barton. Visitors will take a guided tour of the Wyman Tavern Museum on South Main street and discover what steps were taken to try and keep the community safe\, prior to Americans knowing about germ theory and transmission.  Discover who had the pox and how it affected our region’s soldiers during the American Revolution.  Free parking is available along Bruder Street in Historical Society-designated spaces. This is a one-hour guided tour in a historic house museum. \nTicketing Details – Click here to purchase tickets \nTickets are $10/person. Tickets must be pre-purchased on the Society’s website: Historical Society of Cheshire County within 24 hours of the tour day/time. \nNo walk-up tickets will be available at this time. SUMMARY:Found Films of the 1910s with film historian Larry Bennaquist
DESCRIPTION:In 2006\, 7 reels of silent 35 mm film\, from 1911 to 1913\, were found in a barn in Nelson\, NH. These films had most probably been entertainment for a boys’ summer camp on Granite Lake. \nOf these seven reels\, two comprised a 25 minute film directed by John Ford’s older brother\, Francis\, in 1913\, entitled “When Lincoln Paid.” Of the seven films on Lincoln directed by Francis\, this is the only one known to survive. “Parson Sue\,” a one-reel film directed by Alice Guy Blaché in 1912\, is a comedy Western short film\, and most probably the first Western-themed filmed ever to be directed by a woman. “Their First Misunderstanding” is a comedy short starring and written by Mary Pickford in 1911\, her first film after separating from Biograph\, and the first film to have the film’s star advertised by name. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County invites the public to a film viewing and discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist on Wednesday\, June 28th\, 6:30pm. These films are being shown in conjunction with the Historical Society’s newest exhibit Hello Mother\, Hello Father: a history of summer camps in NH’s Monadnock Region. \nSeating is limited. Yet fifty years later\, the village and mill buildings survive – in fact\, thrive. Today\, the village boasts a lively general store\, post office\, children’s center\, affordable housing\, artist studios\, a woolen yarn spinning mill\, and hydroelectric and solar power – surrounded by nearly 150 acres of conserved land. \nThis unusual small-town success is in part a consequence of a radical idea that became Historic Harrisville\, Inc. To celebrate the first five decades of this unlikely nonprofit organization\, Historic Harrisville’s story has finally been set down in full. Written and assembled by preservation specialist Elizabeth Durfee Hengen and conservation expert Robert H. Russell\, Out of Date and Ahead of Its Time is an illuminating portrait of this pioneering effort. The remains of abandoned railroads\, slowly fading away\, grow fewer by the year. Many former railroad structures and landscapes are scarcely recognizable at all today.
