Yet fifty years later\, the village and mill buildings survive – in fact\, thrive. Today\, the village boasts a lively general store\, post office\, children’s center\, affordable housing\, artist studios\, a woolen yarn spinning mill\, and hydroelectric and solar power – surrounded by nearly 150 acres of conserved land. \nThis unusual small-town success is in part a consequence of a radical idea that became Historic Harrisville\, Inc. To celebrate the first five decades of this unlikely nonprofit organization\, Historic Harrisville’s story has finally been set down in full. Written and assembled by preservation specialist Elizabeth Durfee Hengen and conservation expert Robert H. Russell\, Out of Date and Ahead of Its Time is an illuminating portrait of this pioneering effort. Weaving interviews\, archival material\, and choice historical context with full-color photographs\, Hengen and Russell explore the origin of the organization and how it maneuvered long odds\, necessity\, and luck to remain essential for more than fifty years. The images are rich in historic landscapes\, railroad action\, and people.  Thumbnail historical reviews of the railroads discussed in the two earlier volumes are also included. The remains of abandoned railroads\, slowly fading away\, grow fewer by the year. Many former railroad structures and landscapes are scarcely recognizable at all today. Featuring author Howard Mansfield and composer Ben Cosgrove\, “A Journey” is based on Mansfield and Cosgrove’s live performance now touring the region\, unveiling New Hampshire’s natural and artistic heritage as you’ve never seen it before. Come join us for the film’s world premiere\, followed by a Q&A discussion with Mansfield\, Cosgrove\, and the filmmakers. \nThe film will air in April on NHPBS\, so this Historical Society of Cheshire County event will serve as an exclusive preview of that state-wide broadcast – as well as an appetizer for the main course coming up next month: a full live performance of “A Journey” at Keene’s Colonial Theatre Showroom on Friday\, April 14! \nA Journey to the White Mountains is sponsored by the Historical Society of Cheshire County and SALT Project. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County relies on historical sources to communicate local history. The documents\, photographs\, and artifacts preserved in its archives have led to hundreds of talks\, workshops\, walking tours\, exhibits\, school resources\, and publications. Yet\, there are gaps in the collections. There are stories missing from our local history\, memories not preserved. The “Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region” project is filling in some of those gaps using citizen archivists.
