Mark Twain\, Amelia Earhart\, robber baron Jubilee Jim Fisk\, infamous actress May Yohe\, and miser Hetty Green\, the richest woman in the United States\, all spent time in the quiet corner. Noteworthy inventors\, outspoken women\, military heroes\, nationally prominent businessmen\, and dastardly criminals all called the region home. Local historian and author Alan F. Rumrill has compiled stories that reveal a region defined by its Yankee character ‘ and filled with Yankee characters. \nAlan Rumrill is a native of the Monadnock Region\, where his family has lived since 1770. He has been executive director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County for thirty-nine years. During that time\, he has written eight books and presented more than one thousand programs on the region’s history and art. He also prepares three weekly radio and newspaper features on local history.

Featuring author Howard Mansfield and composer Ben Cosgrove\, “A Journey” is based on Mansfield and Cosgrove’s live performance now touring the region\, unveiling New Hampshire’s natural and artistic heritage as you’ve never seen it before. Come join us for the film’s world premiere\, followed by a Q&A discussion with Mansfield\, Cosgrove\, and the filmmakers. \nThe film will air in April on NHPBS\, so this Historical Society of Cheshire County event will serve as an exclusive preview of that state-wide broadcast – as well as an appetizer for the main course coming up next month: a full live performance of “A Journey” at Keene’s Colonial Theatre Showroom on Friday\, April 14! \nA Journey to the White Mountains is sponsored by the Historical Society of Cheshire County and SALT Project. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County relies on historical sources to communicate local history. The documents\, photographs\, and artifacts preserved in its archives have led to hundreds of talks\, workshops\, walking tours\, exhibits\, school resources\, and publications. Yet\, there are gaps in the collections. There are stories missing from our local history\, memories not preserved. The “Recovering Black History in the Monadnock Region” project is filling in some of those gaps using citizen archivists. DESCRIPTION:Covered Bridges of the Monadnock Region \nNovember 30\, 2022 at 6:00 pm \nFree and open to the public …… please register here \nNestled in the southwest corner of the state\, the Monadnock Region is home to seven covered bridges. Kim will present the rich histories of Winchester’s two bridges\, the Ashuelot and the Coombs\, as well as Swanzey’s four covered bridges\, the Thompson\, Slate\, Carlton\, and Sawyer’s Crossing.  \nKim Varney Chandler is the author of Covered Bridges of New Hampshire; an engaging and well-illustrated history of the remaining covered bridges in the Granite State. The 288-page\, full color\, softcover features the author’s own current day photography of all sixty-one covered bridges\, paired with historical photos in a then-and-now-theme. Kim partnered with bridgewrights\, timber framers\, bridge engineers\, historical societies\, town offices\, libraries\, state and national organizations\, and community members to compile extensive histories of each bridge. \nKim is a researcher\, amateur genealogist\, photographer\, bird watcher\, and dog lover. She is a two-time graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Kim works as a high school counselor at Fall Mountain Regional High School and commits an inordinate amount of time to volunteer work for a variety of organizations. She is a life-long resident of New Hampshire except for two stints living south of the Mason-Dixon. She lives in Hancock with her husband Marshell and Pemi the hiking therapy dog.

Alan Rumrill will share stories of this practice throughout New England. He will also discuss laws and punishments used against grave robbers and the process used to rob a grave. The presentation will include several Cheshire County grave-robbing tales. \n\nRegister Here  \n\n\n\n\nAlan Rumrill has been executive director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County for 38 years.  He has written hundreds of articles and 8 books on historical subjects and has made more than 1000 local history presentations.  He is a native of Stoddard where his family has lived since 1770.

DESCRIPTION:Redfern Presenting Series: “Amy Beach\, American Romantic”\nTUESDAY October 11\, 2022\, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.\nThis event is a broadcast of a documentary about NH composer Amy Beach and is shown on Redfern Arts Center’s Main Stage. It will be followed by discussion with concert pianist and Keene local\, Virginia Eskin. \nAmy Cheney was born September 5th\, 1867\, in Henniker\, New Hampshire. She would become one of the most respected and accomplished American composers of her time. As a pianist she made her debut in The Boston Music Hall at the age of 16\, and at 17 she appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Beach later became a national symbol of women’s creative power and was the dean of American women composers. \nAmy Beach continued her connections to New Hampshire. Her family moved to Boston when she was four years old\, but in her later years she spent summers in Hillsborough and at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough where she was an early supporter\, contributing time and money to the Colony in its important early years\, and willing the rights to her compositions to the Colony upon her death. Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of mochigome\, a short grain japonica glutinous rice which is pounded into a paste and molded into the desired shape. It has a stretchy\, soft\, and chewy texture. Mochi can be eaten plain or filled with ingredients such as red bean paste\, strawberries\, mango\, ice cream\, nuts\, and more.
