She would become one of the most respected and accomplished American composers of her time. As a pianist she made her debut in The Boston Music Hall at the age of 16\, and at 17 she appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Beach later became a national symbol of women’s creative power and was the dean of American women composers. \nAmy Beach continued her connections to New Hampshire. Her family moved to Boston when she was four years old\, but in her later years she spent summers in Hillsborough and at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough where she was an early supporter\, contributing time and money to the Colony in its important early years\, and willing the rights to her compositions to the Colony upon her death. He holds a PhD in anthropology from Brown University and has spent the last thirty years studying Native American archaeological sites in New England. In 2010\, he directed the excavations of four 12\,000 year-old Paleoindian dwellings at the Tenant Swamp site in Keene. Goodby is the author of the 2021 book A Deep Presence: 13\,000 Years of Native American History as well as many scholarly articles on paleo-Indians and archaeology. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n For 35 years\, Judy Dow has been a educator/mentor\, braiding into all of her educational work core concepts of the Wabanaki people of New England: Respect\, Reciprocity\, Relationships\, Responsibility\, Reverence. Judy was the recipient of the VT Governor’s Heritage Award for Outstanding Educator in 2004. She has taught students from pre-K to university and worked in community settings\, reservations\, prisons\, and assisted living centers. Her current focus is reclaiming historical Indigenous stories\, and mapping them to provide youth with another perspective of history\, science and math. These tools will assist them in making meaning of their own lives. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lynn Murphy is an Abenaki elder\, wife\, mother\, grandmother\, and a descendant of the Sadoques family of Keene\, NH. She recently retired as a middle school science teacher and now works on an Indigenous humanities summer camp for youth through the Vermont Humanities Council. She is a former trustee of the Mt. Owens will talk about the Conservancy’s mission to work with communities and landowners to conserve the natural resources\, wild and working lands\, rural character\, and scenic beauty of the Monadnock region. \nThe Sip Pond Peninsula Trail is part of the Monadnock Conservancy’s Chamberlain Conservation Area in Fitzwilliam\, NH\, and it follows the Cheshire Rail Trail. Along the tour\, visitors are encouraged to find evidence of human interaction with the land over time. Owens will share some of what is known of this scenic peninsula. Thousands of years ago\, this region was once part of a glacial lake bed and remains a part of N’dakinna\, the homeland of the Abenaki people. Learn about the pond’s namesake\, Scipio Jawhaw\, an 18th-century African American settler in the region. Alan’s talk is titled: “Mountain as Muse: The Artists who Painted Mt. Monadnock.” \n  \nFor almost 200 years artists have focused on the landscape of the mountain as a subject for their canvases.  For these artists Monadnock has been a source of inspiration for their art. The program will review the art of many painters and the history of their lives and work in the region.  It will also investigate what their art tells us about the mountain\, the region and the artists themselves.  The different styles of painting employed by these people and what those styles tell us about the American view of nature over time will be explored.  The program will also explore the impact of these landscapists on tourism\, land conservation and the way the Monadnock Region is viewed today. \nAlan Rumrill is a native of Stoddard where his family has lived since 1770.  He has been executive director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County for 39 years.  Alan has written nine books\, dozens of articles\, and presented more than 1000 programs on the history of southwest New Hampshire. \n  \nThe program will be available as an in-person event at the Jaffrey Civic Center in the Auditorium Gallery as well as via Zoom.
