DESCRIPTION:On May 6\, at 5pm\, the first season concludes with speaker Alan Rumrill. Alan’s talk is titled: “Mountain as Muse: The Artists who Painted Mt. Monadnock.” \n  \nFor almost 200 years artists have focused on the landscape of the mountain as a subject for their canvases.  For these artists Monadnock has been a source of inspiration for their art. The program will review the art of many painters and the history of their lives and work in the region.  It will also investigate what their art tells us about the mountain\, the region and the artists themselves.  The different styles of painting employed by these people and what those styles tell us about the American view of nature over time will be explored.  The program will also explore the impact of these landscapists on tourism\, land conservation and the way the Monadnock Region is viewed today. \nAlan Rumrill is a native of Stoddard where his family has lived since 1770.  He has been executive director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County for 39 years.  Alan has written nine books\, dozens of articles\, and presented more than 1000 programs on the history of southwest New Hampshire. \n  \nThe program will be available as an in-person event at the Jaffrey Civic Center in the Auditorium Gallery as well as via Zoom. Pre-registration is required\, and for this event\, the center is requiring proof of COVID19 vaccination. Masks will also be required. These programs are free of charge\, but to help support this event and others like it\, donations are appreciated. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the premiere of the documentary\, Jennie B. Powers: The Woman Who Dares\, on Sunday\, March 13\, 2022\, at 4pm at the Colonial Theatre’s Showroom. SALT Project president Elizabeth Myer Boulton and Historical Society director of education Jennifer Carroll will speak following the film. \nThe story of Jennie B. Powers and the work of humane societies in the early 20th century will now be the subject of a short documentary\, set to be released March 13\, 2022.  Keene’s Emmy-award winning production company\, SALT Project\, is collaborating with the Historical Society of Cheshire County to transform Jenna Carroll’s NH Humanities-to-Go program The Woman Who Dares into a short film.  Historical Society archival materials and photographs\, along with shadow puppets designed by Stringpullers Puppet Company of New York\, combine to bring Powers’ story to life. \nJenna Carroll\, Education Director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County said\, “I initially stumbled upon Jennie Powers and the Keene Humane Society while doing research for a local high school teacher in 2017.  The collection is archived at the Historical Society of Cheshire County and a large portion of her documents and photographs are restricted from public use. Of course\, that intrigued me and I began to study Jennie’s story in my free time.  That research led to public presentations and resource packets for students.  I see her story connecting with students and adults alike because it’s so relatable to today.  Jennie B. Powers represents an alternative view of the past\, one that isn’t always so pretty and demure.  It’s important for me to help people make connections to history in all of its complexity.  I’ve always tried to do that with my own daughters\, sharing stories of both national and local empowered women in the hopes that it will inspire them.” \n“Before the pandemic\, I had the opportunity to hear Jenna Carroll speak to a standing room only crowd at the Historical Society of Cheshire County about the amazing life and work of Jennie B. Powers\,” said Elizabeth Myer\, President and Creative Director at SALT Project\, a non-profit production company based in Keene\, NH. “What an amazing story: this progressive-era\, gun-slinging\, justice-seeking woman who was simultaneously hard-as-nails and tender-hearted as she worked tirelessly to protect the most vulnerable. I knew we had to make a film about her! So\, we gathered together a crackerjack crew – including a puppeteer originally from Brattleboro\, VT\, who specializes in turn-of-the-century\, multiplane silhouette animation; an amazing local gaffer and proud Keene State alum; and a rambunctious crew of rescued animals over at Amazing Grace Animal Sanctuary in Gilsum\, NH. DESCRIPTION:African American Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire During the American Revolution\n with Author Glenn Knoblock \nDescription:\n\n\n\nAfrican American Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire During the American Revolution \nOne of the most interesting aspects of the American Revolution is the role played by African Americans in the fight for independence. Both free African Americans and those that were enslaved were key in manning state militias and Continental Army units\, as well as serving on the high seas in the Navy and on privately armed ships. Indeed\, their service to the colonies was crucial in a conflict that lasted nearly seven years. Prohibited from serving in military units and largely considered “undesirable elements\,” how is it that these African-American soldiers came to fight for the cause of liberty\, even when their own personal liberty was not guaranteed? Glenn Knoblock examines the history of African-American soldiers’ service during the war\, including how and why they enlisted\, their interaction with white soldiers\, service on the battlefields\, how they were perceived by the enemy and the officers under whom they served\, and their treatment after the war. \n\n\n\nOnline event registration is required click here\n\n\n\nGlenn Knoblock is an independent scholar and author of fifteen books and over 100 articles. He has painted nearly 400 portraits including numerous CEOs of industry\, presidents of universities\, and educational leaders as well as family and individual portraits. They include nine US Governors including Mitt Romney; US Senators Tom McIntyre\, Judd Gregg\, and James Webb\, Jr.; Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson and Dr. Phillip A. Sharp; Secretary of Labor Robert Reich; Cardinal Humberto Medeiros and actor\, Ethan Hawke. \nRichard graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of New Hampshire in 1968 and received an Honorary Doctorate in 2015. He studied with the eminent Boston painter R. H. Ives Gammell over a period of five years and recently published Advice to a Young Artist\, Letters of Ives Gammell to Richard Whitney. Richard is the author of Painting the Visual Impression which has been read by artists and art lovers worldwide and He is listed in many reference books including\, Who’s Who in America\, and Who’s Who in the World.

As they discuss their own work in relation to this theme\, they will also draw on the works that are included in the exhibition.\nNew Hampshire Now features selections from a project in which 46 photographers made images with a particular focus on views and events from 2020. The Cheshire exhibition features a mix of photographs specific to the Keene area along with a large selection of images from across the state. These and other seekers were on the road to find out\, all united by their longing to find in America “a revolution of the spirit.”

DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire NOW:  A Photographic Diary of Life in the Granite State \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is pleased to become one of eight hosts for a state-wide exhibition entitled “New Hampshire Now: A Photographic Diary of Life in the Granite State.” T \nhe public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit on Oct. 1\, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. \n“NH NOW” is a two-year project to photographically record life in New Hampshire. Nearly 50 photographers traveled throughout the state between 2018 and 2020\, making thousands of images that collectively create a twenty-first-century portrait of the people\, places\, culture\, and events in New Hampshire. This project documents contemporary life in our state\, in much the same way that photography projects of the past have done\, such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange during the Great Depression and Lewis Hines when he visited the mills of Manchester in the early 1900s.
