DESCRIPTION:To celebrate a half-century of painting\, Richard Whitney has created a retrospective exhibition of his work in the new book\, The Art of Richard Whitney. On Saturday\, December 18\, 2021\, at 10:30 am\, Whitney will be at the Historical Society of Cheshire County to read from his new book and sign copies of all three of his publications. \nThe Art of Richard Whitney contains a biography and essay on Whitney’s approach to painting and 275 reproductions of his paintings and the stories behind them. \n200 pages. The cost is $80. \n“I have spent over 50 years trying to capture\, in paint\, the beauty that I see around me. Now\, as much as ever\, people need beauty and joy in their lives. It is my hope that his book gives pleasure to others.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRICHARD WHITNEY\, PhD.H \nTown and Country magazine has named Richard Whitney\, PhD.H one of the top dozen portrait painters in America. Fine Art Connoisseur called him one of “the giants of the field” of figurative painting. Dr. Whitney has won over 50 regional and national awards and his paintings hang in over 800 public and private collections throughout the United States and abroad. He has painted nearly 400 portraits including numerous CEOs of industry\, presidents of universities\, and educational leaders as well as family and individual portraits. They include nine US Governors including Mitt Romney; US Senators Tom McIntyre\, Judd Gregg\, and James Webb\, Jr.; Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson and Dr. Phillip A. Sharp; Secretary of Labor Robert Reich; Cardinal Humberto Medeiros and actor\, Ethan Hawke. \nRichard graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of New Hampshire in 1968 and received an Honorary Doctorate in 2015. He studied with the eminent Boston painter R. H. Ives Gammell over a period of five years and recently published Advice to a Young Artist\, Letters of Ives Gammell to Richard Whitney. Richard is the author of Painting the Visual Impression which has been read by artists and art lovers worldwide and He is listed in many reference books including\, Who’s Who in America\, and Who’s Who in the World.

As they discuss their own work in relation to this theme\, they will also draw on the works that are included in the exhibition.\nNew Hampshire Now features selections from a project in which 46 photographers made images with a particular focus on views and events from 2020. The Cheshire exhibition features a mix of photographs specific to the Keene area along with a large selection of images from across the state. DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire NOW:  A Photographic Diary of Life in the Granite State \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is pleased to become one of eight hosts for a state-wide exhibition entitled “New Hampshire Now: A Photographic Diary of Life in the Granite State.” T \nhe public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit on Oct. 1\, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. \n“NH NOW” is a two-year project to photographically record life in New Hampshire. Nearly 50 photographers traveled throughout the state between 2018 and 2020\, making thousands of images that collectively create a twenty-first-century portrait of the people\, places\, culture\, and events in New Hampshire. This project documents contemporary life in our state\, in much the same way that photography projects of the past have done\, such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange during the Great Depression and Lewis Hines when he visited the mills of Manchester in the early 1900s. Fifty photographs will be on view at the Historical Society of Cheshire County including many Monadnock region photographs as well as works from other regions of New Hampshire.  The project director is seventh NH Artist Laureate\, Gary Samson. \nEight separate exhibitions of photographs from the New Hampshire Now collection will open simultaneously at partnering venues around the state on October 1\, 2021. \nThe locations are:  \n\nNew Hampshire Historical Society\, Concord\nManchester Historic Association\nMuseum of the White Mountains\, Plymouth State University\nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, Keene\nPortsmouth Historical Society/Discover Portsmouth\nColby-Sawyer College\, New London\nBelknap Mill\, Laconia\nTillotson Center\, Colebrook

DESCRIPTION:Mountain as Muse: The Artists Who Painted Mount Monadnock \nAugust 11 at 5:30 pm\nVia Zoom – You may register for “Mountain as Muse” by visiting the Harris Center website (harriscenter.org) \nOn August 11\, 2021\, Historical Society executive director Alan Rumrill will present a PowerPoint program entitled “Mountain as\nMuse: The Artists who Painted Mount Monadnock.” The program will be co-sponsored by the Historical Society and the Harris Center for Conservation Education. \nThe first published drawing of Monadnock was created by Charles T. Jackson in about 1840. Hundreds of subsequent artists were inspired by the mountain as a subject. Their work depicted the mountain in all seasons\, from all angles\, in a variety of styles\, and told many different stories. The images created by these men and women have been enjoyed by countless viewers and served to advertise Mount Monadnock near and far. This presentation will share some of their stories and their paintings. \nThe program will be offered on Zoom at 5:30 p.m. on August 11. Convinced that his perceptual skills as an artist led him to solve problems that scientists could not\, he immersed himself in intense observation of Dublin’s woodlands and made revelations with far-reaching implications that landed on the desks of Churchill and Roosevelt during World War II. This richly illustrated presentation will take a deep dive into the lessons that this local artist\, known around the world as the “inventor of camouflage\,” learned from the local landscape and that forever changed the landscape of war. \nApril Claggett\, who will present this talk\, is an artist and art historian with a background in Environmental Studies. She lives in Dublin.
