DESCRIPTION:Mountain as Muse: The Artists Who Painted Mount Monadnock \nAugust 11 at 5:30 pm\nVia Zoom – You may register for “Mountain as Muse” by visiting the Harris Center website (harriscenter.org) \nOn August 11\, 2021\, Historical Society executive director Alan Rumrill will present a PowerPoint program entitled “Mountain as\nMuse: The Artists who Painted Mount Monadnock.” The program will be co-sponsored by the Historical Society and the Harris Center for Conservation Education. \nThe first published drawing of Monadnock was created by Charles T. Jackson in about 1840. Hundreds of subsequent artists were inspired by the mountain as a subject. Their work depicted the mountain in all seasons\, from all angles\, in a variety of styles\, and told many different stories. The images created by these men and women have been enjoyed by countless viewers and served to advertise Mount Monadnock near and far. This presentation will share some of their stories and their paintings. \nThe program will be offered on Zoom at 5:30 p.m. on August 11. Convinced that his perceptual skills as an artist led him to solve problems that scientists could not\, he immersed himself in intense observation of Dublin’s woodlands and made revelations with far-reaching implications that landed on the desks of Churchill and Roosevelt during World War II. This richly illustrated presentation will take a deep dive into the lessons that this local artist\, known around the world as the “inventor of camouflage\,” learned from the local landscape and that forever changed the landscape of war. \nApril Claggett\, who will present this talk\, is an artist and art historian with a background in Environmental Studies. What’s it like to meet a real potter? Come to the Wyman Tavern and learn more about the craftspeople who made everyday products for people 250 years ago. \nEmilia Whippie Prior and JJ Prior will portray 1770s Keene residents\, and siblings\, Mary and Abner Sanger. They will talk to visitors about getting dressed in the 18th century and the construction of clothing. Rebecca Whippie will demonstrate how to dye wool in a variety of colors for producing textiles like bedding and clothing. Joyce Steinhagen will demonstrate how to weave cloth tape\, a material used in a variety of textiles during the 18th and 19th century. DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s feature summer exhibit\, we invite you to view the 2013 documentary film\, The Ghost Army\, on May 26-27\, 2021. Then meet the filmmaker Rick Beyer on Friday\, May 28 at 6pm for an online Q/A about the film and the legacy of one of the army’s biggest secrets during World War II. Click here to register. \nAll registrants will receive a link to view the film on May 26-27 \nThis program is free to all but donations are gladly accepted. \nGhost Army tells the true history of a secret U.S. Army unit of 1\,100 troops that was set up in 1944 and operated until 1945 in the final stages of World War II in the fight against German troops in various parts of Europe. They used a combination of different ways of visual\, sonic and radio deception to convince the enemy of the presence of specific Army units that were in fact operating elsewhere. \nAlthough not featured in the film\, local resident Mickey McKane was involved with the Ghost Army Unit. His personal artwork and scrapbooks from the war will be on display in the upcoming Historical Society of Cheshire County exhibit. The Ghost Army exhibition is available to the public through the Ghost Army Legacy Project and will be on display from June 2\, 2021 to September 4\, 2021.  \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is a Blue Star Museum\, allowing all military veterans and their families free access to the exhibit. \nThis program has been brought to you by the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, C&S Wholesale Grocers\, Savings Bank of Walpole\, The Putnam Foundation\, Bergeron Construction Company\, and Price Chopper.

On May 22nd\, three craftspeople will be at the Wyman Tavern to introduce the general public to traditional woodworking arts. \nMeg Kupiec will demonstrate chair caning and splint-woven seating. Wayne Miller will demonstrate wood carving and planing. And\, Kathy Schillemat will demonstrate how to make a wattle fence using locally harvested tree saplings. Ehris Urban and Velya Jancz-Urban’s enthusiastic delivery is funny and frank. LOCKE\, who\, as a writer of short poems and songs\, a composer of music\, and a pubic singer\, has a reputation the family may well be proud of. Sent to the army by President Lincoln to sing for the soldiers\, he became army postmaster and often associated as nurse in the hospitals at the front\, and long before the three years of his time with the soldiers that had expired\, he was probably known to more soldiers than any other civilian in the country. DESCRIPTION:As the world\, the United States\, and Cheshire County deal with the coronavirus pandemic\, it may be comforting to learn that our predecessors faced a surprising similar situation 100 years ago\, and promptly saw life return to normal. How did the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918 affect southwest New Hampshire and what comparisons can be made to the current epidemic? Alan Rumrill will provide a historical perspective on our current situation in this online program. \n\n\n\nWe will be joined at the program by Don Caruso\, MD\, MPH\nCEO/President of Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth Hitchcock\n\n\n\nDr. Caruso is a Family Physician who has provided primary care for the Keene\, NH community for 23 years. He was the Family Medicine Chair at Dartmouth Hitchcock Keene from 1994 – 2005. From 2005 to 2011\, Dr. Caruso served as Associate Medical Director at Dartmouth Hitchcock Keene after which he became the Medical Director of Dartmouth Hitchcock Keene and served from 2011 to 2015. DESCRIPTION:Three NH historical organizations\, in partnership with the NH Black Heritage Trail of Portsmouth\, have embarked upon a research and documentation project to recover black history in their respective counties. Join the Historical Society of Cheshire County (Keene)\, the Monadnock Center for History and Culture (Peterborough)\, the Warner Historical Society\, and the NH Black Heritage Trail (Portsmouth) to learn more about their projects. \nEach organization is in a different stage of their work. Each organization is seeking virtual volunteers to assist them with documenting the lives of black individuals and families living in Cheshire\, Hillsborough\, and Merrimack Counties. DESCRIPTION:The Rusts\, The Slades and The Burroughs: what a small historic cemetery can teach us about the function and structure of early Anglo-American communities in New Hampshire.\n\nWednesday\, February 17\,2021 at 6:00pm\nFree online event\nClick here to register\n\nAfter the end of the French and Indian War (1763)\, Anglo-American towns all along the Connecticut River Valley sprung into being. They were generally populated by groups of interrelated extended families from established and over crowded towns in southern New England. Alstead\, NH was one such place. But years before the town proper was established\, a group of those Anglo-American settlers\, a handful of siblings\, in-laws and neighbors\, set up an early enclave that functioned as a town in microcosm. It provided its residents with traditional English political and social infrastructure\, including a cemetery.\n\nNew Hampshire archaeologist Gail Golec offers a fascinating look at uncovering the history of a community by studying its cemeteries. Golec manages the blog The Secret Life of Death.
