DESCRIPTION:The Rusts\, The Slades and The Burroughs: what a small historic cemetery can teach us about the function and structure of early Anglo-American communities in New Hampshire.\n\nWednesday\, February 17\,2021 at 6:00pm\nFree online event\nClick here to register\n\nAfter the end of the French and Indian War (1763)\, Anglo-American towns all along the Connecticut River Valley sprung into being. They were generally populated by groups of interrelated extended families from established and over crowded towns in southern New England. Alstead\, NH was one such place. But years before the town proper was established\, a group of those Anglo-American settlers\, a handful of siblings\, in-laws and neighbors\, set up an early enclave that functioned as a town in microcosm. It provided its residents with traditional English political and social infrastructure\, including a cemetery.\n\nNew Hampshire archaeologist Gail Golec offers a fascinating look at uncovering the history of a community by studying its cemeteries. Golec manages the blog The Secret Life of Death.

Sirkka Tuomi Holm witnessed almost a century of Finnish-American history. From her Grandfather fighting for the Reds during the Finnish Civil War to her immigrant parents’ involvement in labor strikes\, to being trailed by the FBI\, and being the first woman on the East Coast to be subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee\, Sirkka led a fascinating life.\nShe spent years on the Finnish-American amateur stage and served overseas during World War II. She spent her life fighting for what she believed in and the rights of others. An actress\, activist and veteran\, Sirkka has written and been involved in numerous books and research on Finnish-America\, labor\, peace activities and feminism.\nJim Kurtti of the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock\, Michigan notes “Given the depth and breadth of what Sirkka has fought for and endured in her near-century of life\, this film is not only an engaging work\, but also an invaluable capsule of Finnish-American life and history that will surely resonate not only in present-day Finnish America\, but with future generations of immigrant descendants as well.”\nThis film was produced by Kristin Ojaniemi in partnership with the Finnish American Heritage Center\, and premiered at Sirkka’s 99th birthday celebration in Francestown\, New Hampshire in early August 2019.\nThis virtual program is present through an ongoing partnership between the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock Michigan.

Although the book sale was delayed for about six months due to the pandemic\, the Society has managed to collect 4\,500 used books\, and the popular fundraising event is scheduled for Friday\, November 6 through Friday\, November 20. \nThis year’s book sale has been modified in several ways to allow for social distancing. The Historical Society’s director Alan Rumrill said\, “Our top priority is safety. We will limit the number of customers allowed in the sale to eight people at any one time. Facemasks will be required and gloves will be provided for customers. Social distancing rules will be applied \nThe following times allow free admission\, but limited numbers of customers will be allowed in the sale at any one time. Appointments should be made by phone or email to avoid wait times: 603-352-1895 or hscc@hsccnh.org. \n  \n\nFriday Nov 6 — open 10 am to 4 pm\nSaturday Nov 7 — open 10 am to 1 pm\nNovember 10\, 12\, 13 — open 10 am to 2 pm\nNovember 17\, 18\, 19\, $5 per bag\, open 10 am to 2 pm\nFriday\, Nov 20\, $1 per bag\, open 10 am to 2 pm\n\n  \nMost books will sell for $1.00 and the proceeds will support the Historical Society’s programs to collect\, preserve\, and communicate the history of Cheshire County. Books cover topics such as history\, biography\, antiques\, art\, architecture\, cookbooks\, travel\, fiction\, and children’s books. Rumrill observed\, “Our members always drop off an eclectic selection of titles. Sometimes I wonder what they enjoy more\, cleaning their bookshelves and donating the books\, or browsing the book sale to find books to bring home.” \n  \nRumrill recalls that the idea for the Historical Society to hold a used book sale came 20 years ago from Charles Felix\, the son of Sylvia Felix who owns Eagle Books\, at 19 West Street in Keene. The Felixes continue to help with the set-up of the book sale each year. \n  \nThe book sale coincides with the reopening of the Historical Society to the public. The Historical Society’s Museum Store is offering 20% discounts for members and 10% discounts for not-yet members of the Historical Society. The Museum Store carries a variety of items with connections tom Cheshire County including the popular new books Keene Through Time with almost 200 images of Keene and the stories behind them\, and Iron Roads of the Monadnock Region with hundreds of rail stories and over 700 images\, maps\, and tables. \n  \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County has been collecting\, preserving\, and communicating the history of the Monadnock Region for 93 years. In 2019\, the Society’s staff of five employees and about 150 volunteers put on 174 programs that served 13\,214 people\, 29% of whom were youth and teens. Although the Historical Society closed its doors to the public for several months during the COVID-19 emergency\, the staff has worked hard to deliver local history stories via the internet. The Society is excited about reopening its headquarters at 246 Main Street.

Tickets are $10/person.  You must bring a printed copy of your ticket or show it on your smartphone to the tour guide.  This is a 2 hour walking tour on mostly pavement and flat surfaces.
