DESCRIPTION:In Trinidad\, in 1796\, teenage Rosa Rendón quietly but purposefully rebels against typical female roles and behavior. Bright\, competitive\, and opinionated\, Rosa sees no reason she should learn to cook and keep house-it is obvious her talents lie in running the farm she expects to be her birthright\, despite her two older siblings. But as her homeland goes from Spanish to British rule\, it becomes increasingly unclear whether its free black property owners-Rosa’s family among them-will be allowed to keep their assets\, their land\, and ultimately\, their freedom. \n\nBy 1830\, Rosa is living among the Crow Nation in Bighorn\, Wyoming with her husband\, Edward Rose\, and family. Her son Victor has reached the age where he should seek his vision and become a man. But his path is blocked by secrets Rosa has kept hidden from him. So Rosa sets out to take him on a journey to where his story began and\, in turn\, retraces her own roots\, those of a girl who forged her own way from the middle of the ocean to the grassy hills of a far-away land. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the Jonathan Daniels Center for Social Responsibility at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Sister Societies presentation by Beth Solerno
DESCRIPTION:Many 19th century women got their first taste of political activism in small-town societies advocating temperance and other moral causes. Alongside national organizations with charismatic male leaders\, these grassroots efforts by ordinary women helped to bring about social reform\, change the meaning of political action and\, in the process\, redefine gender roles. Significantly\, women moved from behind-the-scenes moral suasion into the political arena at a time when the question of slavery in the United States was developing from a humanitarian concern into a hotly contested partisan issue. Society met women’s entrance into political antislavery with mobs\, riots\, and sharp debate. \nIn Sister Societies\, Beth Salerno documents ties of kinship and friendship that drew women into the more than 200 exclusively female antislavery societies scattered across the free states. These societies were home to a surprising degree of diversity. Whether black or white\, churchgoing or come-outer\, radical or conservative\, members found temporary unity in a common cause and the bonds of womanhood. \nThough some of the antislavery societies were short-lived\, others persisted from the 1830s through the Civil War. As women’s activism evolved during these decades\, members practiced quiet forms of resistance such as sewing clothing for fugitive slaves\, embroidering antislavery slogans on linen goods\, and boycotting the products of slave labor. At the same time\, they increasingly engaged in public protest by signing petitions\, sponsoring conventions\, circulating antislavery propaganda\, and raising funds for the cause. Wednesday\, September 2\, 2020 7pm \nWas there scientific basis behind “quacky” colonial cures?\nThe history of medicine is filled with stories of strange tonics\, outlandish remedies\, and curious “cures.” Toads\, snails\, mashed potatoes\, mandrake\, and bear grease were commonly prescribed. While some of these ingredients sound crazy\, there’s logic behind many of them! For instance\, snake oil hasn’t always been just a euphemism for quack medical treatments. For centuries\, oil from the Chinese water snake was an actual treatment used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve joint pain. Today\, we know that snakes are a rich source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)\, an omega-3 fatty acid containing anti-inflammatory properties. \nOn Wednesday\, September 2\, 2020 at 7pm the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host an online presentation by the Grounded Goodwives\, Ehris Urban and Velya Jancz-Urban. How did suffragists benefit from World War I in the final push for passage of the women’s suffrage amendment? Who was left out when women got the right to vote?  Using historic photos and documents\, Liz Tentarelli will guide us on the journey. DESCRIPTION:Granny D Memorial Walk\nAugust 8\, 2020 1-4pm\nPlease join us for the Annual Granny D Memorial Walk on August 8\, 2020 in Keene\, NH. This year our theme is “100 Years of Women Walking for Democracy.” We’re celebrating not only our founders\, Dublin\, NH’s Doris “Granny D” Haddock\, we’re also celebrating 100 years since the ratification of the 19 Amendment on August 18th!\nWe’re doing things a little different and in a different place this year!\nWe will plan to meet at 10 Gilbo Ave in Keene at 1 pm.\nWhile all the details have not been finalized\, the plan is for small groups to “fan” out from Central Square in at least three directions carrying signs and walking on city sidewalks to maximize visibility\, then return to the bandstand in Central Square by 2:30 pm for a rally with music\, speakers and ice cream!\nSome distances will be longer than others\, they range from 1.5 mi to 4 mi. Please email Doreen and let her know if you would like to join a longer route or a shorter route\, so that we can keep track. Or if you would just like to come to the Rally.\n– There is no cost to the event\, but we would appreciate donations to help pay for the music and rentals\n– This will be a “safe” event. Masks required\, as well as social distancing.\n– We will observe all traffic laws and local ordinances.\n– To celebrate the suffragists\, you can wear white and wear a sash (purple and gold were frequently used) This isn’t required\, but we thought it would be fun!\n– You will need to bring a water bottle (we’ll have refills)\, sunscreen\, a hat and a chair\, if you want one at the rally.\n– You will also be required to sign our standard walk waiver. We’ve got just the cure for your boredom! \nKeene YPN\, in collaboration with Monadnock United Way\, Greater Keene Rotaract Club\, and the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, present the triumphant return of Keene’s greatest historical riddle-based scavenger hunt of all time. \nTeams of 1-6 people compete to answer trivia and riddle clues by locating landmarks (modern or historical) around a ½ mile radius from Main Street Keene. Teams must either photograph themselves with the landmarks\, find information about the landmark\, or if the landmark is a business\, acquire a collectible from the landmark. Scoring is based on how many clues were correctly answered\, the total time to return to the starting location\, and other penalties and bonuses. \nWe will be carefully curating this event to make it Covid-safe\, including keeping teams spaced at the beginning and end\, keeping team size limited to 6\, and ensuring mask-wearing when inside businesses. \n\nClick here to register

DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County is proud of the depth and breadth of the programs we have delivered – 174 programs last year\, which reached 13\,214 people\, 25% of whom were youth. We are also proud of the investments we have made in our facilities – the historical preservation of the Wyman Tavern\, the improvements at our headquarters the Ball Mansion\, and the acquisition and renovations of the Bruder House next door to the Wyman Tavern. Through its 93-year history the Society has been an important asset for the community\, and we want you to know we are in it for the long haul. \nDuring the COVID-19 crisis\, we have had to redirect our priorities. With our facilities closed\, we have had to cancel or postpone a number of face-to-face programs and find ways to deliver our local history stories digitally. We are proud of the resiliency of our organization through these difficult times. \nThis year for NH Gives\, we hope you will consider supporting the Historical Society in one of two ways: 1) to help us meet operating expenses so we can retain staff positions\, or 2) to support our newest project\, the Jonathan Daniels Center for Social Responsibility. SUMMARY:Keene Holi Fest - Has been canceled until 2021
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This event has been canceled until 2021\nHoli Festival. \nCelebrating the arrival of spring\, Holi (also called Holika or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India\, Nepal\, Bangladesh\, and the United States.  Members of the region’s Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival  and lead a lesson in dandiya stick dancing.  Food will be available from Royal Spice Restaurant for sale.  At 12:30 families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other. It is recommended that participants wear old clothes and dress warmly.   This event is possible thanks to the support of Savings Bank of Walpole and Hamshaw Lumber. Holi is a collaboration between the Keene India Association\, Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and the city of Keene’s Human Rights Committee. \n

Must register by 12:00 pm 3/18/20.  \nKingsbury Toys\, the documentary.\nSee the 30-minute documentary film by Peter Frechette on the history of Kingsbury Toys\, manufactured in Keene\, NH between the 1890s and 1940s. \nThe Toys exhibit is a collaboration between the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, the Brattleboro Historical Society\, Marlborough Historical Society and many individuals with personal links to toy manufacturing history. Sponsors of the exhibit include Douglas Toy Company\, Whitney Brothers\, and Toadstool Bookshops.\nThe Historical Society will host several toy related events and presentations  in conjunction with the exhibit.
