SUMMARY:NH Gives Campaign 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County is proud of the depth and breadth of the programs we have delivered – 174 programs last year\, which reached 13\,214 people\, 25% of whom were youth. We are also proud of the investments we have made in our facilities – the historical preservation of the Wyman Tavern\, the improvements at our headquarters the Ball Mansion\, and the acquisition and renovations of the Bruder House next door to the Wyman Tavern. Through its 93-year history the Society has been an important asset for the community\, and we want you to know we are in it for the long haul. \nDuring the COVID-19 crisis\, we have had to redirect our priorities. With our facilities closed\, we have had to cancel or postpone a number of face-to-face programs and find ways to deliver our local history stories digitally. We are proud of the resiliency of our organization through these difficult times. \nThis year for NH Gives\, we hope you will consider supporting the Historical Society in one of two ways: 1) to help us meet operating expenses so we can retain staff positions\, or 2) to support our newest project\, the Jonathan Daniels Center for Social Responsibility. SUMMARY:Keene Holi Fest - Has been canceled until 2021
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This event has been canceled until 2021\nHoli Festival. \nCelebrating the arrival of spring\, Holi (also called Holika or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India\, Nepal\, Bangladesh\, and the United States.  Members of the region’s Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival  and lead a lesson in dandiya stick dancing.  Food will be available from Royal Spice Restaurant for sale.  At 12:30 families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other. It is recommended that participants wear old clothes and dress warmly.   This event is possible thanks to the support of Savings Bank of Walpole and Hamshaw Lumber. Holi is a collaboration between the Keene India Association\, Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and the city of Keene’s Human Rights Committee. \n

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 28\, 2020.  1:30pm-4pm   Keene State College\, Science Building\, Room 101\nShadows Fall North film and discussion \nMany towns in New Hampshire have been home to enslaved natives of Africa and to African-Americans for more than 350 years\, but their stories have often been left out of the official narrative. This 2016 documentary film chronicles the efforts of two community scholars and activists\, Valerie Cunningham and JerriAnne Boggis\, to bring to light stories of Africans and African-Americans in New Hampshire\, from slavery to the Civil Rights era.  This film showing is a collaboration of the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, Keene State College’s Continuing Education Department and Office of Multicultural Student Support & Success.  Shadows Fall North was produced by the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Humanities in collaboration with Atlantic Media Productions and the NH Black Heritage Trail in Portsmouth\, NH.  This film is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Alan Rumrill\, director of The Historical Society of Cheshire County\, will talk about three centuries of life along Connecticut River\, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday\, Feb. 21\, in the Walpole Town Hall. \nThe Connecticut River comprises the entire western border of Cheshire County and has played a major role in the history of the region. Rumrill will share tales about the four New Hampshire towns located on the river: Hinsdale\, Chesterfield\, Westmoreland and Walpole. He will tell about the uses of the river\, bridges\, ferries\, disasters\, crimes\, businesses\, famous folks and everyday life along the river for the past 300 years. \n  \nThe event is free of charge and open to all. DESCRIPTION:Jennie Powers: The Woman Who Dares\nWednesday\, January 22\n6:30 pm\nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\nExhibit Hall.\nJennie Powers was a Progressive Era woman who stood up against social vices in New Hampshire and Vermont in the early 20th century. She was a humane society agent in Keene\, NH\, from 1903-1936\, and one of the first humane society agents to become a deputy sheriff in New Hampshire. Jennie was known across the country as The Woman Who Dares\, cited by the Boston Post newspaper as having arrested more men than any other woman in America in 1906. As a photographic activist\, she used her camera to document animal cruelty\, family violence\, and wide-spread poverty in New Hampshire’s Monadnock region and beyond. This one-hour slide presentation introduces attendees to Jennie’s life story\, the work of humane societies at the turn of the 20th century\, and the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) from a local perspective.\nThis program is the first of the Celebrating Empowered Women in Cheshire County series of programs.

DESCRIPTION:Railroad historians Bradford G. Blodget and Richard R. Richards\, Jr. have been working on their railroad book\, “Iron Roads of the Monadnock Region” for seven years in collaboration with the Historical Society. Blodget and Richards have meticulously researched the history of the railroads in the Region from the years 1847 to 2017 and the relationships with the communities they served. The authors have collected over 750 photographs of historical significance\, and the book will contain detailed maps and tables of the rail lines of the Monadnock Region in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The Historical Society of Cheshire County is proud to offer this unique and important two-volume set. Anyone with an interest in this region will be intrigued and informed by the images and information that illustrate the huge impact of the railroad on the history of southwest New Hampshire.\nAuthors will be on hand for questions and autographs.

DESCRIPTION:Finnish Tori-Marketplace at Troy Elementary School on Saturday\, November 16\, 2019 9-2pm\nAbout 20 vendors of Finnish crafts\, baked goods\, books\, clothing\, and Christmas ornaments will set up shop for a day at the Finnish Tori-Marketplace\, Saturday\, November 16 at the Troy Elementary School\, 44 School Street\, Troy\, New Hampshire. The Tori is patterned after traditional outdoor marketplaces in Finland. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Visitors will have multiple opportunities to purchase Christmas ornaments\, gifts\, and goodies. \nFinns will be able to find some of their favorite products such as sweet licorice\, mustards\, breads\, woodworking\, knitted goods\, tapestries\, and field knives. Finns-for-a-day will be able to learn about Finnish foods\, crafts\, and imports. As in classic Toris\, the marketplace will feature impromptu performances of Finnish music and craft demonstrations. Breakfast\, lunch\, snacks\, and coffee will be available at the Tori-Marketplace as well. \nA few things to look for at the Tori are woven birch bark items by Elaine Moe of Massachusetts; custom embroidery by Cara Staviski of New Jersey; hand-dyed spinning fibers by Peg Critser and Jan Lishua of New Hampshire; raw honey from Son of a Bee in Westminster\, Massachusetts; and imported products of Finland by Suomi Imports. Baked goods will be available from The Kitchen Garden of Templeton\, Massachusetts; Apron Strings Bakery of Rindge\, New Hampshire; and The Finnish Mama of Fitzwilliam\, New Hampshire. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is organizing the Tori-Marketplace in conjunction with FinnFunn Weekend at the Inn at East Hill Farm\, hosted by the Finnish American Heritage Society\, Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja\, and the Finnish Center at Saima Park in Fitchburg\, Massachusetts. The Historical Society’s director of education\, Jenna Carroll says\, “The Tori is a wonderful way to celebrate the Finnish culture. One of our most important goals at the Historical Society is to connect people with the diverse cultures that have come to this area throughout our history.” \nFinlandia Foundation’s 2019 Lecturers of the Year Soile Anderson and Eleanor Ostman are special guests of the FinnFunn Weekend. They will co-present on Finnish foodways. Soile is a native of Finland who relocated to the Twin Cities area of Minnesota where she founded The Deco Restaurant\, Taste of Scandinavia\, and the Finnish Bistro. In 2017\, she was inducted into the Scandinavian American Hall of Fame. Ostman’s popular 30-year food column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press\, “Tested Recipes\,” was the basis for her cookbooks Always on Sunday and Always on Sunday Revisited. \nFinnFunn Weekend will feature an afternoon of Finnish plays in translation\, presented by Rockport Community Theatre and Valerie Nelson of Gloucester\, Massachusetts. Men on a Mission is a tale of love and potatoes in 1700s Finland by 20th century Finnish playwright Arturri Leinonen. The Betrothal by Aleksis Kivi is about a tailor’s romance gone awry. The Burglary by Minna Canth has a main character who is a pagan folk healer. And Scenes from Karin is the story of a woman who returns to Finland after 18 years in America. \nFinnFunn Weekend also includes a film series\, presentations\, music and dance performances\, and workshops. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society’s new feature exhibit Toys: The Story of Toy Manufacturing in the Central Connecticut River Valley examines the development of the toy industry to reveal the technological innovations of its residents\, the history of childhood play theory in America\, popular culture’s impact on industry\, and how both national and international forces impacted the toy industry. \nThe exhibit opens at the Society\, 246 Main Street in Keene\, with a reception on Wednesday\, November 6 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public. A special hands-on play area will be provided for children. The exhibit will continue through April 18\, 2020\, and then move to Brattleboro\, Vermont\, and Peterborough\, New Hampshire. \n\nThe Toys exhibit is a collaboration between the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, the Brattleboro Historical Society\, The Marlborough Historical Society and many individuals with personal links to toy manufacturing history.
