SUMMARY:Toys: The Story of Toy Manufacturing in the Central Connecticut River Valley Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society’s new feature exhibit Toys: The Story of Toy Manufacturing in the Central Connecticut River Valley examines the development of the toy industry to reveal the technological innovations of its residents\, the history of childhood play theory in America\, popular culture’s impact on industry\, and how both national and international forces impacted the toy industry. \nThe exhibit opens at the Society\, 246 Main Street in Keene\, with a reception on Wednesday\, November 6 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public. A special hands-on play area will be provided for children. The exhibit will continue through April 18\, 2020\, and then move to Brattleboro\, Vermont\, and Peterborough\, New Hampshire. \n\nThe Toys exhibit is a collaboration between the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, the Brattleboro Historical Society\, The Marlborough Historical Society and many individuals with personal links to toy manufacturing history. DESCRIPTION:Finnish Tori-Marketplace at Troy Elementary School on Saturday\, November 16\, 2019 9-2pm\n \n  \nAbout 20 vendors of Finnish crafts\, baked goods\, books\, clothing\, and Christmas ornaments will set up shop for a day at the Finnish Tori-Marketplace\, Saturday\, November 16 at the Troy Elementary School\, 44 School Street\, Troy\, New Hampshire. The Tori is patterned after traditional outdoor marketplaces in Finland. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Visitors will have multiple opportunities to purchase Christmas ornaments\, gifts\, and goodies. \nFinns will be able to find some of their favorite products such as sweet licorice\, mustards\, breads\, woodworking\, knitted goods\, tapestries\, and field knives. Finns-for-a-day will be able to learn about Finnish foods\, crafts\, and imports. As in classic Toris\, the marketplace will feature impromptu performances of Finnish music and craft demonstrations. Breakfast\, lunch\, snacks\, and coffee will be available at the Tori-Marketplace as well. \nA few things to look for at the Tori are woven birch bark items by Elaine Moe of Massachusetts; custom embroidery by Cara Staviski of New Jersey; hand-dyed spinning fibers by Peg Critser and Jan Lishua of New Hampshire; raw honey from Son of a Bee in Westminster\, Massachusetts; and imported products of Finland by Suomi Imports. Baked goods will be available from The Kitchen Garden of Templeton\, Massachusetts; Apron Strings Bakery of Rindge\, New Hampshire; and The Finnish Mama of Fitzwilliam\, New Hampshire. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is organizing the Tori-Marketplace in conjunction with FinnFunn Weekend at the Inn at East Hill Farm\, hosted by the Finnish American Heritage Society\, Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja\, and the Finnish Center at Saima Park in Fitchburg\, Massachusetts. The Historical Society’s director of education\, Jenna Carroll says\, “The Tori is a wonderful way to celebrate the Finnish culture. One of our most important goals at the Historical Society is to connect people with the diverse cultures that have come to this area throughout our history.” \nFinlandia Foundation’s 2019 Lecturers of the Year Soile Anderson and Eleanor Ostman are special guests of the FinnFunn Weekend. They will co-present on Finnish foodways. Soile is a native of Finland who relocated to the Twin Cities area of Minnesota where she founded The Deco Restaurant\, Taste of Scandinavia\, and the Finnish Bistro. In 2017\, she was inducted into the Scandinavian American Hall of Fame. Ostman’s popular 30-year food column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press\, “Tested Recipes\,” was the basis for her cookbooks Always on Sunday and Always on Sunday Revisited. \nFinnFunn Weekend will feature an afternoon of Finnish plays in translation\, presented by Rockport Community Theatre and Valerie Nelson of Gloucester\, Massachusetts. Men on a Mission is a tale of love and potatoes in 1700s Finland by 20th century Finnish playwright Arturri Leinonen. The Betrothal by Aleksis Kivi is about a tailor’s romance gone awry. The Burglary by Minna Canth has a main character who is a pagan folk healer. And Scenes from Karin is the story of a woman who returns to Finland after 18 years in America. \nFinnFunn Weekend also includes a film series\, presentations\, music and dance performances\, and workshops. DESCRIPTION:Talk to focus on the ‘Woman Who Dares’\nThe Marlborough Historical Society will meet Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Marlborough Community Center at 160 Main St. for a presentation on “Jennie Powers: The Woman Who Dares” by Jennifer Carroll\, education director at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\nIn the early 20th century\, Jennie Powers took a stand against social vices in New Hampshire and Vermont. She was a humane society agent in Keene from 1903 to 1936 and was one of the first agents to become a deputy sheriff in New Hampshire. Known across the country as “The Woman Who Dares\,” Powers was cited in 1906 by the Boston Post newspaper as having arrested more men than any other woman in America. She used her camera to document animal cruelty\, family violence and widespread poverty in New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region and beyond.\nFor over 20 years Jennifer Carroll has managed New England historical societies and museums. She holds a Master of Arts degree in historical administration from Eastern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and women’s studies from the University of New Hampshire. At the Historical Society of Cheshire County she coordinates over 150 public programs per year.\nCarroll’s illustrated presentation will present Powers’ life story as well as the work of humane societies at the turn of the 20th century and the politics of the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) from a local perspective.\nThis program is supported by a grant from N.H. Humanities. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served after the presentation

SUMMARY:Candlelight Open House at the Wyman Tavern Museum
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 4\, 2019.  6:30 pm-8:30pm.  Wyman Tavern & Horatio Colony House Museum\, Main St. \nAnnual Candlelight Open House on Main Street \nJourney back into the 18th and 19th centuries on Friday\, October 4th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Two of Keene’s historic Main Street homes\, the Wyman Tavern and Horatio Colony House Museum\, will hold candlelight open houses from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. This great family event offers an opportunity to view the warmth and charm of these two Keene landmarks as they were before electricity – lit only with candles. The Wyman Tavern at 339 Main Street was built in 1762 and used as a tavern by the Wyman family for more than 40 years.  With reenactors stationed in each room\, visitors to the Tavern can play Colonial games of chance\, meet Abner Sanger\, and tour the house. \nThe Horatio Colony House Museum at 199 Main Street is a Federal style home built in 1806 by Abel Blake\, son of one of Keene’s first settlers.  In the late 19th century\, it became the home of a branch of the Colony family connected with the Faulkner Colony Woolen Mill on West Street and the Cheshire Mill in Harrisville. Horatio Colony II was the last of the family to live in the house which is filled with original family furnishings and collections from around the world\, spanning the 18th through late 19th century. The home is completely intact\, reflecting three generations of the family living for 130 years. \nThese collaborative candlelight open houses are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:This History of Gym Class
DESCRIPTION:The History of Gym Class \n Wednesday\, September 25rd\, 2019.  7:00 pm.  Free.  \nKeene Family YMCA \n200 Summit Road\, Keene. \n  \nRebecca Noel explores the sometimes alarming\, sometimes hilarious backstory of what we now know as gym class. Physicians have worried since the Renaissance that the sedentary\, scholarly life makes people sick. They focused on varying concerns over time: digestive woes\, melancholy\, tuberculosis\, spinal curvature\, reproductive weakness. The problems increased with access to education during the Enlightenment and into the 1800s. Tracing this idea from Europe to the United States\, from scholars to children\, and from boys’ to girls’ education\, the presentation shows how these fears inspired schools to get children moving. The (optional) interactive aspects of the presentation will include audience testing of historic exercise schemes\, some done in pairs. The program concludes with audience discussion of the relevance of this problem to our own times—like the Enlightenment\, a moment in history when many more people live the sedentary lives once limited to a few scholars. \nThis free public event is sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities. \n \nPhoto information: Girls’ Calisthenics class at Woodrow Wilson High\, Washington\, DC\, 1943 \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:About this Event\n\n\nExperience authentic sounds of the late 1890s with the Newmont Military Band (NMB) when it performs at 3 p.m. on Sunday\, August 25\, 2019 in Heberton Hall\, 60 Winter Street\, at the Keene Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. \nMany are the historical connections with this band and Keene\, from a performer in the band itself\, James C. Chesebrough\, Professor Emeritus of Keene State College\, to the famous composer of music to be performed at the event\, Edwin Eugene Bagley (1857–1922)\, a favorite son of Keene and the person to whom the bandstand on Central Square was dedicated in 1979 by the visiting First Lady Rosalyn Carter. \nNMB\, which was formed in 1995 in Windsor\, VT.\, follows the original instrumentation that many of the ”Military” bands employed in the late 1890s. Most of the brass instruments played by the musicians in NMB were manufactured during the 19th century\, and all of them harken back over 100 years when compared to the sound of a modern band. \nNMB’s 2019 program\, The Music of New England’s Bagley Brothers\, features the music of E.E. Bagley\, whose music was known far and wide\, while he resided in Keene for the majority of his professional career. He wrote and first performed the National Emblem March in Keene. The composition remained second only to John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever in popularity\, according to the late Keene Historian David Proper. \nThe late Mr. Bagley’s gravesite and memorial are located in Keene’s Greenlawn Cemetery. \nE.E. Bagley’s older brother\, Ezra M. Bagley (1853-1886)\, was a successful performer in venues around the world. \nMade possible through the generous donation of Ruth and Carl Jacobs of Keene and through the auspices of the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, the performance will include music from the War Between the States\, love songs\, marches\, dances\, and old folk songs. Very likely also to be performed will be the National Emblem March. \nThe band has performed at the Shelburne Museum’s Heritage Days in Windsor\, VT; the Franklin Pierce Homestead in Hillsborough\, NH; The Gettysburg\, PA\, Band Festival several times; The Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg; and at numerous other historic venues. \nNMB players possess a different level of skill to produce the sound so indicative of the old-time bands. Their uniforms are based on photos of the Windsor Military Band performing at the summit of Mt. DESCRIPTION:Family Colonial Night\, July 22\, 2019 \nJoin us on Monday\, July 22\, 2019 at 6:30-8:30 pm \nMeet real Colonial era reenactors Erich and Janice Steinhagen of Griswold\, CT.  Try 18th century pottery-making\, butter making\, spinning\, weaving and carding wool. This is a free event with a suggested donation of $5 per family. \nJanice and Erich Steinhagen of Steinhagen Pottery will present a window into colonial life by demonstrating and discussing the crafts of pottery-making\, spinning and weaving. \nFor textile-working\, Janice will share her knowledge of gathering fibers from plant and animal sources\, dyeing using natural dyestuffs\, spinning\, and weaving cloth.  Potter Erich will discuss finding clays for making ceramics\, processing techniques\, and the art of forming pottery on the wheel. Erich also talk about ceramics that are not in common use today.   Families are encouraged to try their hand at making butter using redware pottery churns.  One lucky boy and girl will get dressed in period clothing as the Steinhagens explain how people dressed in the 18th century. \nThis program normally takes approximately two hours and will take place at the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s Bruder House located at 349 Main Street in Keene\, NH. \nThe Steinhagens are four time selectees as one of America’s best traditional craftspeople by Early American Life Magazine.  Erich has been making pottery for over 40 years and Janice has extensive experience with spinning\, weaving\, and natural dyeing.  They demonstrate and teach all over the east coast\, including Washington’s Mount Vernon\, Fort Niagara\, Fort Ticonderoga\, as well as Boston Common and other historic sites. \nTo learn more about the artist please visit their website at steinhagenpottery.com \n

Wyman Tavern\, 339 Main Street\, Keene. \nWyman Tavern Festival \nIt’s the 1770s again!  The annual 18th century Wyman Tavern Festival is being held on Saturday\, June 15\, 2019 from 10am to 3pm\, 339 Main Street in Keene.  With something for everyone in the family\, the public can enjoy Colonial artisans demonstrating traditional crafts\, music and dance\, performances\, as well as child-friendly games and activities.  21st century refreshments will be available for sale throughout the day including the Tavern’s famous Rhubarb Cooler\, a refreshing (non-alcoholic drink). Admission to the Wyman Tavern Festival is $10 per adult.  Children under the age of 18 years are free.  \n  \nThe Wyman Tavern Festival is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County puts on 150 programs per year to help people of all ages “find their place in history\,” \nOn June 1\, the Historical Society celebrated the opening of our newest facility\, the Bruder House\, a 2 1/2-story Greek Revival-style brick farmhouse that was built in 1839. The Bruder House is located next door to our period house museum\, the Wyman Tavern (1762). As part of a $2.4 million capital campaign to expand and improve our facilities\, extensive renovations were done to the Bruder House to transform it into a modern education\, presentation\, and visitor center. \nIn the spirit of what’s called adaptive reuse\, the Bruder House is now outfitted with a lecture room\, a warming kitchen\, handicap accessibility\, a covered porch overlooking the grounds of the Wyman Tavern\, and an outdoor brick oven. The newly renovated Bruder House is now coupled with the Wyman Tavern next door to create a campus where history and culture can be shared with local residents and visitors to the region. \nBut our work is not yet complete. The Historical Society of Cheshire County needs to raise an additional $37\,000 to fund the construction of a timber-frame pavilion to connect with the hearth cooking area outside the Bruder House. \n  \nThe pavilion will be a place where about 25 people can gather\, outside but sheltered from the elements. It will be designed by Bensonwood\, a company based in Walpole\, New Hampshire that is reviving the ancient craft of timber framing for contemporary homes using modern tools and methods. \nThe pavilion will support events and programs of the Historical Society where people can learn about the region’s heritage and be surrounded by its history. For example\, programs about 18th century cooking will use the hearth for demonstrations of cooking breads and soups\, and 18th century summer camps will use the space for activities. \nIn-kind donations of labor and materials worth $13\,000 have already been received from Bensonwood\, Ingram Construction\, and the Melanson Company\, and a grant has been received from the Kingsbury Fund.
