DESCRIPTION:Love and Loss After Wounded Knee Book Talk with Julie Dobrow \nWednesday\, March 18\, 2026\, 6 PM \n246 Main Street\, Keene NH \nFree event | registration is required   Love and Loss After Wounded Knee” Book Talk with author Julie Dobrow Tickets\, Wed\, Mar 18\, 2026 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite \nTufts University Professor Julie Dobrow shares the tumultuous and storied lives of Charles Eastman\, and his wife\, Elaine\, former operators of Camp Oahe in Munsonville\, NH. \nBook Description: \nLove and Loss After Wounded Knee traces Elaine and Charles’ lives from her humble beginnings on a farm in a remote corner of the Berkshires in Massachusetts and his\, chased from his home in a Sioux encampment in Minnesota to the woods of Manitoba after the US Army attacked the Sioux in 1862\, to their very unlikely meeting at Pine Ridge Agency in 1890 just ahead of the tragedy at Wounded Knee Creek. They would go on to marry. Their improbable interracial union would ultimately yield nineteen books; hundreds of articles\, lectures\, stories\, novels and poems; numerous posts in government agencies and civic organizations working on behalf of Native American rights; and six children. Charles would become one of the best known and most photographed Indians of his era; Elaine’s name remained well-known during her lifetime from her plentiful publications and advocacy on behalf of Native American education. Despite these metrics of success\, their marriage foundered. Eventually\, it dissolved. Over three decades together and the remainder of their lives\, apart\, the Eastmans navigated the complex boundaries of their individual and collective identities\, crossing into and out of Indian Country geographically\, personally and professionally. \nDrawing from extensive primary research done with archives in fifteen states and Washington D.C.\, two Canadian provinces\, the BBC and newspaper archives in England and Wales\, and one Native American college library on the Pine Ridge Reservation; the work of many Indigenous scholars as well as a host of other historical and literary secondary sources\, Love and Loss After Wounded Knee interprets the Eastmans’ lives through many lenses. At a time of profoundly unsettling controversies around race\, immigration\, and how we choose to label ourselves and others\, the story of Elaine Goodale and Charles Eastman gives a personal\, romantic lens into why it’s so difficult for people from different backgrounds to truly understand each other. But their story also suggests it’s important to try.

DESCRIPTION:“Dead Horse Soup” Book Talk with Tom Haynes \nEvent: March 11 @ 6:00 PM \nLocation: Putnam Exhibit Hall\, 246 Main Street\, Keene NH \nTickets: Free Event …. please register at Dead Horse Soup Book Talk with Tom Haynes Tickets\, Wed\, Mar 11\, 2026 at 6:30 PM | Eventbrite \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the event. \nFrank Barker first learned about the rush to the Klondike gold fields through his local Keene\, New Hampshire newspapers.  For months\, beginning on July 17\, 1897\, the almost daily references to the Klondike promoted a story that anyone with the right fortitude and determination could find gold.  As a young working-class man seeking adventure and wealth after living through the depression of the mid 1890s\, this was an opportunity he was not going to pass up. \nFor seven months Frank Barker planned his trip to the Klondike\, which included finding the right people to accompany him\, organizing what food\, tools\, and equipment to bring\, transportation\, and raising enough money to cover the expedition’s costs. \nWith his plans complete\, Frank Barker leads his three partners on a once in a lifetime adventure to live out their dreams of becoming wealthy miners\, while enduring the many hardships on their two-year quest for gold in the Klondike. \nAfter reading about the gold rush to the Klondike through his local Keene\, New Hampshire newspapers\, Frank Barker begins to dream about becoming a wealthy gold miner.  After much planning\, Barker’s dream turns real in February of 1898\, when he leads three partners on a once in a lifetime adventure to the Klondike.  Using Barker’s own words from the letters he wrote home and the photographs he took of the journey\, his story reveals the excitement and hardships they experience on their two-year quest for gold in the Klondike.

We will explore some promising models to address these intersecting issues. \nWe’ll explore how communities can: \n                Reimagine historic religious properties for new housing\, community\, and mission-aligned uses \n               Understand funding realities and fundraising strategies for active congregations as well as re-use \n               Learn from real examples that balance stewardship with change \nWhether you’re a trustee\, volunteer\, clergy member\, or community partner\, this session will give you tools to think strategically about the future of your building — before a crisis forces hard choices. DESCRIPTION:Film now showing in the Putnam Exhibit Hall at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH \nFee and open to the public during regular business hours. \nOr online at https://hsccnh.org/the-kingsbury-machine-tool-corporation/ \nYears ago\, David Kingsbury Frechette grew concerned that the rich history of the Kingsbury Machine Tool Company would be lost to time. The company held deep family roots—founded by his great-grandfather\, Harry T. Kingsbury\, and later led by his grandfather\, Edward James Kingsbury\, and his father\, Henry Manley Frechette. To preserve this legacy\, video interviews were conducted with former employees who had worked at the company. \nAs time passed\, the family gathered and decided to transform these interviews into a short documentary film chronicling Kingsbury’s remarkable evolution from toy manufacturing to becoming a respected machine tool company in the mid-20th century. The film was produced by David’s brother\, Peter Frechette\, and generously shared with the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \nThe Frechette family recognizes there are gaps in their understanding of the company’s daily operations following their father Harry’s passing. For more info\, call (603) 352-2033. \nLocation: at the Showroom\, 20 Commercial St.\, Keene. \nPhoto: An original release poster for ‘The Old Homestead’ (1922)\, produced by Paramount Pictures. \nIt’s been six years since local film historian Lawrence Benaquist located two early 20th century silent film versions of the “play of the century\,” The Old Homestead\, in Europe.  By the time the films were produced\, the original rural melodrama had been seen by over twenty million Americans.  Thanks to a collaboration with the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, Benaquist raised the funds to needed to return the films to the United States and have them restored.  On Saturday\, February 7th at 3pm the public will have an opportunity to see these two films plus a short documentary about their history at the Colonial Theatre Showroom in Keene\, NH. \nThe Old Homestead play was written in 1886 by Denman Thompson\, a farmer-turned-actor-turned-playwright\, from Swanzey\, NH.  It not only became a sensation\, but the play helped to shape the image of the Yankee farmer for an entire nation.  Thompson himself played the lead character\, Uncle Josh\, who must search for his son who\, accused of a crime he did not commit\, has fled to New York City.  Thompson’s play\, full of wit\, song\, and rural humor and pathos\, came to the American stage at a time when young people were fleeing the rural life for work in the big cities; when labor strife was rampant\, high unemployment\, financial depression\, hoboes roaming the country.  The rural values featured in the play and subsequent filmed versions held a great appeal for the American audiences of the late 19th century.  Excursion trains often took people to Boston expressly to see “The Old Homestead.” \nThe recently rediscovered silent films were produced by Paramount Pictures—the 1915 version having been found in Paris and the 1922 version in Belgium.  Each has now been restored through a collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\, the Royal Film Archive of Belgium\, and the Library of Congress. “The survival of one of these films would have been unlikely; the survival of both is near-miraculous\,” says Benaquist\, retired Professor of Film Studies at Keene State College.  The films will be screened in two parts at the Colonial Theatre’s Showroom.  Beginning at 3pm\, attendees will view one of the silent films followed by a short documentary by Slate Roof Films on the history of The Old Homestead. Live music accompaniment will be provided by Jeff Rapsis\, silent film musicologist and musician.  Historians Larry Benaquist and Howard Mansfield will lead a discussion following the viewing. Ticket holders who are interested in coming back at 7 pm will have the opportunity to watch the second silent film (45 minutes). \nThis event is generously sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities\, Eppes-Jefferson Foundation\, NH Charitable Foundation\, Kingsbury Fund\, Madelaine Von Weber\, and the Steadmans. \n
