Admission to the Wyman Tavern Festival is $10 per adult.  Children under the age of 18 years are free.  \n  \nThe Wyman Tavern Festival is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County puts on 150 programs per year to help people of all ages “find their place in history\,” \nOn June 1\, the Historical Society celebrated the opening of our newest facility\, the Bruder House\, a 2 1/2-story Greek Revival-style brick farmhouse that was built in 1839. The Bruder House is located next door to our period house museum\, the Wyman Tavern (1762). As part of a $2.4 million capital campaign to expand and improve our facilities\, extensive renovations were done to the Bruder House to transform it into a modern education\, presentation\, and visitor center. \nIn the spirit of what’s called adaptive reuse\, the Bruder House is now outfitted with a lecture room\, a warming kitchen\, handicap accessibility\, a covered porch overlooking the grounds of the Wyman Tavern\, and an outdoor brick oven. The newly renovated Bruder House is now coupled with the Wyman Tavern next door to create a campus where history and culture can be shared with local residents and visitors to the region. \nBut our work is not yet complete. The Historical Society of Cheshire County needs to raise an additional $37\,000 to fund the construction of a timber-frame pavilion to connect with the hearth cooking area outside the Bruder House. \n  \nThe pavilion will be a place where about 25 people can gather\, outside but sheltered from the elements. It will be designed by Bensonwood\, a company based in Walpole\, New Hampshire that is reviving the ancient craft of timber framing for contemporary homes using modern tools and methods. \nThe pavilion will support events and programs of the Historical Society where people can learn about the region’s heritage and be surrounded by its history. For example\, programs about 18th century cooking will use the hearth for demonstrations of cooking breads and soups\, and 18th century summer camps will use the space for activities. \nIn-kind donations of labor and materials worth $13\,000 have already been received from Bensonwood\, Ingram Construction\, and the Melanson Company\, and a grant has been received from the Kingsbury Fund. SUMMARY:NH Film Series : The Cocoanuts
DESCRIPTION:Film Series 2019:  \nSound Comes to Keene \nat the Keene Public Library \n At the events\, film historian Larry Benaquist will provide insight into the introduction of ‘talkies’ in Keene’s theatres and more about the history of the films. \nThe Cocoanuts \nWednesday\, May 22\, 2019 \n7:00 pm at The Keene Public Library \n  \nKeene’s Scenic Theatre first premiered this Marx Bros. comedy film in August 1929.  An instant hit with local audiences\, the theatre brought The Cocoanuts back on two more occasions that year.  In the film\, the Marx Brothers reenact many vaudeville routines from their Broadway show to create a film about a Florida land boom\, a hotel\, and a jewel robbery. While watching the film\, the Historical Society wants the audience to note that the film crew had trouble following the Marx Brothers around with microphones to catch their dialogue.  The grips\, out of desperation\, resorted to hanging microphones from fishing poles to create mobile mics.  Discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist to follow.  The Cocoanuts is shown as part of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Keene Public Library’s film series entitled “Sound Comes to Keene.”

DESCRIPTION:Film Series 2019:  \nSound Comes to Keene \nat the Keene Public Library \n At the events\, film historian Larry Benaquist will provide insight into the introduction of ‘talkies’ in Keene’s theatres and more about the history of the films. \nThe Broadway Melody \nWednesday\, May 15\, 2019 \n7:00 pm at The Keene Public Library \nThe Broadway Melody premiered in Keene in May 1929 at the Colonial Theatre\, one month prior to its general release nation-wide.  It was the first musical to have music made just for the film.  It was also the first film to pre-record the music before playing it back to the actors who lip-synced while the cameras were running\, a technique called post-synchronization.  Bessie Love\, in her first sound film\, plays one of two sisters vying for the affections of the same man.  100 minutes.  Discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist to follow.  The Broadway Melody is shown as part of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Keene Public Library’s film series entitled “Sound Comes to Keene.”

DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County’s Annual Used Book Sale is May 10-11\nOn Friday and Saturday\, May 10th and 11th\, book lovers can expect to buy hardcover books for as little as $1.00 a piece and support the programs of the Historical Society of Cheshire County with their purchases. The Historical Society will hold its 19th annual used book sale on Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Over the past fifteen years the used book sale has raised more than $20\,000 for the activities of the Historical Society. \nAt the Historical Society’s used book sale any lover of books should be able to find something. There will of course be books on history\, including excellent selections of local town histories and books about the Civil War. There will be biographies\, art books\, hardcover fiction\, cookbooks\, books on antiques\, architecture\, travel\, hardcover fiction\, anything except mass market paperbacks or textbooks. Book browsers will find books at the Historical Society that they might not find at other book sales. In all\, there will be about 2\,500 titles. \nThe Used Book Sale will help the Historical Society collect\, preserve\, and communicate the history of Cheshire County. Proceeds will support family-friendly events such as the Wyman Tavern Festival on June 15th when the eighteenth century comes alive with period dress\, traditional crafts\, music\, dance\, games\, reenactments\, and storytelling. Proceeds will support programs such as the Eighteenth Century Kids Camp in July\, which gives third through sixth graders a chance to become children who really lived in Keene during the 1700’s. They will support school tours\, teacher workshops\, exhibits\, lectures\, films – in all\, about 150 events per year that offer relevance and a sense of place. \nWe are accepting donations through May 10th\, \nHardcover nonfiction books are encouraged\, especially topics such as history (of course)\, art\, architecture\, antiques\, biography\, travel\, nature\, or recent fiction. \nPlease avoid mass market paperbacks\, encyclopedias\, textbooks\, older fiction\, or damaged items. \n

Ninety minutes in length\, this was Gloria Swanson’s first talking film and it was a tremendous success. The Trespasser is a melodrama in which Gloria is a secretary who marries a wealthy but weak-willed young man whose father forces his son to annul the marriage; however\, she has a son\, and gossip starts that she is a “kept woman.” \n

DESCRIPTION:The next egg class will be April 17th at 4:30pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County at 246 Main St\, in Keene.   The egg we will be working on is one of my best sellers for Mothers Day.  It is a horizontal duck egg with an arrangement of clay roses on top.  You have two choices…making an egg with lattice cutouts with just the roses and crystals for a simple and elegant design.  This kit/ class is $38.00. \nThe second choice is the same egg but with a heart cutout\, and inside a scene of nested doves\, chickadees or bunnies. This film\, the follow-up film to The Jazz Singer\, was even more successful than its predecessor. The Singing Fool has all of Jolson’s songs in synchronized sound\, and many of the dialogue sequences as well as the music track. \n

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 6\, 2019 \nFestival of Color- Holi \nKeene State College’s Mabel Brown Room of the Student Union Center \n1pm-3:30pm \nCelebrating the arrival of spring\, Holi (also called Holika or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India\, Nepal\, Bangladesh\, and the United States.  This year\, Keene State College has joined forces with the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Keene India Association to present the city’s 3rd annual Holi Fest!  The public is invited to attend this free\, family-friendly\, cultural celebration at the in the Mabel Brown Room of the L.P. Young Student Center of Keene State College on Saturday\, April 6th\, 2019 from 1pm-3:30pm.  Members of the regions Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival as well as their personal memories of celebrations in the past.  Dance and musical performances by regional talent will be followed by a lesson in dandiya stick dancing.  The public’s participation is encouraged.  Keene’s Indian Restaurant\, Royal Spice\, will be on hand to sell food.  At 3pm\, families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other.  The Society recommends that participants wear old clothes and dress warmly.  There is no fee to participate but registration is required; the first 250 registered participants will receive a color powder packet. DESCRIPTION:The next egg class is on March 6th at the Historical Society in Keene at 4:30pm until 8:00pm.  Participants have a choice of making two darling quail eggs. Eggs are carved ahead of time\, you will decorate with fimo caned flowers and fine gold braiding.  You will also enhance egg with Swarovski crystals and extra fine glitter. \nChoices are: \nOne bunny:  comes with burgundy suspenders/coloring\, you can paint another color if you choose another main coloring for the egg.  One bunny per person as there is limited number.  (Additional kits may be available depending on class size) Cost for bunny kit is $32.00. \n#1 Quail egg and its own Little Stand.  We will make its own little stand in class.  The egg is carved and is similar to the bunny egg but can you can choose a different color and will have flowers and carving all around the egg.  The findings are gold plated we will use\, to assemble and epoxy these together to create this little stand.  Cost for egg kit and stand $23.00 \n#2 Hanging quail egg.  The hanging quail egg\, similar to the others\, with its own small Swarovski crystal top and jump ring to hang it.  It also has its own gold plated tassel to enhance its beauty.   Cost for this egg kit $21.00. \nColor choices are pink\, purple\, blue\, purplish pink (like sample on bunny)\, red like #1\, dark red like bunny\, possibly some orange.  Some colors may vary. \nYou must register for this class by emailing  Doreen Monahan  at : eleganthatchery@gmail.com or texting 530-933-3432. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to film: Dr. Larry Benequist\, filmmaker \nA Short Documentary filmed by NHPBS of the Johnston Family will screen prior to the film. \nThis film is based on a shocking true story that happened in Keene\, NH. The story is about Dr. Albert Johnston and his family\, a black family who passed for white in order to work while living in Keene\, NH\, in the 1930s and 1940s. \nThis film won the 1949 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Screenplay. Scott Carter (Mel Ferrer) is an African-American doctor who is eager to serve his community by working at a black hospital. However\, he encounters unexpected opposition when his light skin color results in him being mistaken for a white man. At the urging of his in-laws\, Carter and his similarly pale wife\, Marcia (Beatrice Pearson)\, begin to masquerade as white to more easily find their place (to find work) in a fiercely segregated society. He moved to New Hampshire and began his 20 year career in Keene. After it was revealed he was black\, he was discharged from the hospital in Keene in 1953. But Dr. Johnston remained in private practice to loyal patients in his house on Washington Street. The family later moved to Hawaii. \nThis film ran to full houses for 6 months in a theater on Broadway. When a re-release of the film opened in Keene\, NH in the late 1980’s at KSC\, over 1100 residents came out to see it. Members of the Johnston family were here at that opening and were very warmly received by many. Dr Johnston’s only surviving granddaughter will be attending the screening. At his request Dr Johnston was laid to rest in Keene\, NH after his death. \nThe film will be followed by closing words from Dr. Dottie Morris\, Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Keene State College. \nAn exhibit about the Johnston family and the film will open at the Historical Society of Cheshire County on January 27\, and run until February 16. \nPresented in partnership with the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Mason Library in KSC

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, December 5\, 2018.  7pm.  FREE.\nThis Historical Society program will be shown at the Keene Public Library\, 30 Winter Street. \nSeating is limited for this event please RSVP below:\n[Form id=”21″] \nKate Phillips is remembered by many in the Monadnock region as a teacher\, presenter of a Peterborough radio show\, a generous friend and  neighbor in Dublin and later\, in Keene. She was also a Hollywood actress\, and appeared in over fifty films\, as Kay Linaker\,  with actors such as Henry Fonda\, Ginger Rogers\, Claudette Colbert\, Clifton Webb\, Dana Andrews\, and Vincent Price\, to name a few.   She also wrote scripts\, the most famous being the 1958 cult classic\, The Blob\, Steve McQueen’s first feature film. \nA gifted actress who by her own admission never took the Hollywood career business very seriously\, she made two films for John Ford:  Drums Along the Mohawk and Young Mr. Lincoln.    Kate discovered after the war\, that Ford had been searching for her\, to use her in more films\, but was not able to locate her; by then\, she\, as Kate Phillips\, had left Hollywood.  Kate was in five of the very popular Charlie Chan detective films; we will show Charlie Chan in Rio\, from 1941.
