DESCRIPTION:Film Series 2019:  \nSound Comes to Keene \nat the Keene Public Library \n At the events\, film historian Larry Benaquist will provide insight into the introduction of ‘talkies’ in Keene’s theatres and more about the history of the films. \nThe Broadway Melody \nWednesday\, May 15\, 2019 \n7:00 pm at The Keene Public Library \nThe Broadway Melody premiered in Keene in May 1929 at the Colonial Theatre\, one month prior to its general release nation-wide.  It was the first musical to have music made just for the film.  It was also the first film to pre-record the music before playing it back to the actors who lip-synced while the cameras were running\, a technique called post-synchronization.  Bessie Love\, in her first sound film\, plays one of two sisters vying for the affections of the same man.  100 minutes.  Discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist to follow.  The Broadway Melody is shown as part of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Keene Public Library’s film series entitled “Sound Comes to Keene.”

SUMMARY:19th Annual Book Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County’s Annual Used Book Sale is May 10-11\nOn Friday and Saturday\, May 10th and 11th\, book lovers can expect to buy hardcover books for as little as $1.00 a piece and support the programs of the Historical Society of Cheshire County with their purchases. The Historical Society will hold its 19th annual used book sale on Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Over the past fifteen years the used book sale has raised more than $20\,000 for the activities of the Historical Society. \nAt the Historical Society’s used book sale any lover of books should be able to find something. There will of course be books on history\, including excellent selections of local town histories and books about the Civil War. There will be biographies\, art books\, hardcover fiction\, cookbooks\, books on antiques\, architecture\, travel\, hardcover fiction\, anything except mass market paperbacks or textbooks. Book browsers will find books at the Historical Society that they might not find at other book sales. In all\, there will be about 2\,500 titles. \nThe Used Book Sale will help the Historical Society collect\, preserve\, and communicate the history of Cheshire County. Proceeds will support family-friendly events such as the Wyman Tavern Festival on June 15th when the eighteenth century comes alive with period dress\, traditional crafts\, music\, dance\, games\, reenactments\, and storytelling. Proceeds will support programs such as the Eighteenth Century Kids Camp in July\, which gives third through sixth graders a chance to become children who really lived in Keene during the 1700’s. They will support school tours\, teacher workshops\, exhibits\, lectures\, films – in all\, about 150 events per year that offer relevance and a sense of place. \nWe are accepting donations through May 10th\, \nHardcover nonfiction books are encouraged\, especially topics such as history (of course)\, art\, architecture\, antiques\, biography\, travel\, nature\, or recent fiction. \nPlease avoid mass market paperbacks\, encyclopedias\, textbooks\, older fiction\, or damaged items. \n

Ninety minutes in length\, this was Gloria Swanson’s first talking film and it was a tremendous success. The Trespasser is a melodrama in which Gloria is a secretary who marries a wealthy but weak-willed young man whose father forces his son to annul the marriage; however\, she has a son\, and gossip starts that she is a “kept woman.” \n

DESCRIPTION:The next egg class will be April 17th at 4:30pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County at 246 Main St\, in Keene.   The egg we will be working on is one of my best sellers for Mothers Day.  It is a horizontal duck egg with an arrangement of clay roses on top.  You have two choices…making an egg with lattice cutouts with just the roses and crystals for a simple and elegant design.  This kit/ class is $38.00. \nThe second choice is the same egg but with a heart cutout\, and inside a scene of nested doves\, chickadees or bunnies. This film\, the follow-up film to The Jazz Singer\, was even more successful than its predecessor. The Singing Fool has all of Jolson’s songs in synchronized sound\, and many of the dialogue sequences as well as the music track. \n

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 6\, 2019 \nFestival of Color- Holi \nKeene State College’s Mabel Brown Room of the Student Union Center \n1pm-3:30pm \nCelebrating the arrival of spring\, Holi (also called Holika or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India\, Nepal\, Bangladesh\, and the United States.  This year\, Keene State College has joined forces with the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Keene India Association to present the city’s 3rd annual Holi Fest!  The public is invited to attend this free\, family-friendly\, cultural celebration at the in the Mabel Brown Room of the L.P. Young Student Center of Keene State College on Saturday\, April 6th\, 2019 from 1pm-3:30pm.  Members of the regions Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival as well as their personal memories of celebrations in the past.  Dance and musical performances by regional talent will be followed by a lesson in dandiya stick dancing.  The public’s participation is encouraged.  Keene’s Indian Restaurant\, Royal Spice\, will be on hand to sell food.  At 3pm\, families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other.  The Society recommends that participants wear old clothes and dress warmly.  There is no fee to participate but registration is required; the first 250 registered participants will receive a color powder packet. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 2\, 2019.  1pm. \nBus Trip to Naulakha \nTravel with the Historical Society of Cheshire County into the world of Rudyard Kipling.  This annual bus trip begins with and early lunch at Kipling’s Restaurant and Pub in Brattleboro\, VT\, before heading to the home of Rudyard Kipling in Dummerston.  “Naulakha” (jewel without price) is where Kipling wrote his famous works Captains Courageous and The Jungle Books.  Take a private tour of the home and enjoy a special presentation of Just-So stories by Rudyard Kipling himself!  Bus leaves promptly at 11am from the parking lot of the Historical Society.  Plan to return around 3:00pm.  Reservations are $30 per person for transportation\, tour of the house\, and the performance.  Participants pay for their own lunches. \n

SUMMARY:Spring Egg Workshop with Elegant Hatchery
DESCRIPTION:The next egg class is on March 6th at the Historical Society in Keene at 4:30pm until 8:00pm.  Participants have a choice of making two darling quail eggs. Eggs are carved ahead of time\, you will decorate with fimo caned flowers and fine gold braiding.  You will also enhance egg with Swarovski crystals and extra fine glitter. \nChoices are: \nOne bunny:  comes with burgundy suspenders/coloring\, you can paint another color if you choose another main coloring for the egg.  One bunny per person as there is limited number.  (Additional kits may be available depending on class size) Cost for bunny kit is $32.00. \n#1 Quail egg and its own Little Stand.  We will make its own little stand in class.  The egg is carved and is similar to the bunny egg but can you can choose a different color and will have flowers and carving all around the egg.  The findings are gold plated we will use\, to assemble and epoxy these together to create this little stand.  Cost for egg kit and stand $23.00 \n#2 Hanging quail egg.  The hanging quail egg\, similar to the others\, with its own small Swarovski crystal top and jump ring to hang it.  It also has its own gold plated tassel to enhance its beauty.   Cost for this egg kit $21.00. \nColor choices are pink\, purple\, blue\, purplish pink (like sample on bunny)\, red like #1\, dark red like bunny\, possibly some orange.  Some colors may vary. \nYou must register for this class by emailing  Doreen Monahan  at : eleganthatchery@gmail.com or texting 530-933-3432. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to film: Dr. Larry Benequist\, filmmaker \nA Short Documentary filmed by NHPBS of the Johnston Family will screen prior to the film. \nThis film is based on a shocking true story that happened in Keene\, NH. The story is about Dr. Albert Johnston and his family\, a black family who passed for white in order to work while living in Keene\, NH\, in the 1930s and 1940s. \nThis film won the 1949 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Screenplay. Scott Carter (Mel Ferrer) is an African-American doctor who is eager to serve his community by working at a black hospital. However\, he encounters unexpected opposition when his light skin color results in him being mistaken for a white man. At the urging of his in-laws\, Carter and his similarly pale wife\, Marcia (Beatrice Pearson)\, begin to masquerade as white to more easily find their place (to find work) in a fiercely segregated society. He moved to New Hampshire and began his 20 year career in Keene. After it was revealed he was black\, he was discharged from the hospital in Keene in 1953. But Dr. Johnston remained in private practice to loyal patients in his house on Washington Street. The family later moved to Hawaii. \nThis film ran to full houses for 6 months in a theater on Broadway. When a re-release of the film opened in Keene\, NH in the late 1980’s at KSC\, over 1100 residents came out to see it. Members of the Johnston family were here at that opening and were very warmly received by many. Dr Johnston’s only surviving granddaughter will be attending the screening. At his request Dr Johnston was laid to rest in Keene\, NH after his death. \nThe film will be followed by closing words from Dr. Dottie Morris\, Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Keene State College. \nAn exhibit about the Johnston family and the film will open at the Historical Society of Cheshire County on January 27\, and run until February 16. \nPresented in partnership with the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Mason Library in KSC

She was also a Hollywood actress\, and appeared in over fifty films\, as Kay Linaker\,  with actors such as Henry Fonda\, Ginger Rogers\, Claudette Colbert\, Clifton Webb\, Dana Andrews\, and Vincent Price\, to name a few.   She also wrote scripts\, the most famous being the 1958 cult classic\, The Blob\, Steve McQueen’s first feature film. \nA gifted actress who by her own admission never took the Hollywood career business very seriously\, she made two films for John Ford:  Drums Along the Mohawk and Young Mr. Lincoln.    Kate discovered after the war\, that Ford had been searching for her\, to use her in more films\, but was not able to locate her; by then\, she\, as Kate Phillips\, had left Hollywood.  Kate was in five of the very popular Charlie Chan detective films; we will show Charlie Chan in Rio\, from 1941.

Dean of Jaffrey was murdered 100 years ago\, and the mystery of his murder is the topic of a play by Ken Sheldon. \n\nKen Sheldon\, who is known throughout the Monadnock region as an author\, performer\, humorist\, and the creator of Frost Heaves\, will present a performance in Keene on November 28 of “Deep Water – The Murder of William K. Dean.”\n\n\nOn the night of August 13\, 1918\, at the height of World War I\, William K. Dean of Jaffrey\, NH was brutally murdered. Was it his wife? His friend\, the banker? A German spy? \n\nOne hundred years later\, the crime remains unsolved and has been turned into a play entitled Deep Water – The Murder of William K. Dean. Written and performed by Ken Sheldon\, Deep Water is based on actual transcripts of the Grand Jury investigation\, FBI interviews\, newspaper accounts\, and other historic documents. It features hundreds of historic images\, video footage\, and voiceover actors\, some portraying their own ancestors\, witnesses in the Dean Murder investigation. \n\nOn Wednesday\, November 28 at 7 pm\, Ken Sheldon will bring a performance of Deep Water to the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street in Keene. Tickets are $15 or $12 for members of the Historical Society. Tickets are available online at www.hsccnh.org or by calling the Historical Society at 603-352-1895. \n\nKen Sheldon is known throughout the Monadnock region and beyond for his portrayals of Fred Marple\, a character from the fictional town of Frost Heaves. He has also written suspense novels\, children’s books\, and pieces for Yankee Magazine. \n\n“Having lived in Jaffrey at one time\, I was familiar with the basic outlines of the story\,” says Sheldon. “But I had no idea how complex and compelling the real story would turn out to be. It combines elements of a spy story\, war hysteria\, class divisions\, small town life and politics\, and of course\, murder.” \n\n“Doing the research\, I really gained an appreciation for what life in the Monadnock region was like at the time. I think people were more reticent\, more polite\, and more observant of what went on around them\, in part because life went on pretty much the same day after day. Anything different — like high-powered cars going by your house at night — stood out.” \n\nDeep Water has been called “outstanding\,” “amazing\,” and “a spectacular presentation!” The play was commissioned by the Jaffrey Historical Society and produced by Robert Stephenson with support from the Bean Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 7\, 2018.  7pm.  FREE.   \nThis Historical Society program will be shown at the Keene Public Library\, 30 Winter Street\, Keene. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County in partnership with the Keene Public Library will show a film starring Keene High School Graduate turned film star June Vincent. \nDorothy June Smith (1920-2008) moved to Keene when she was eleven years old. Her father was the minister of the First Congregational Church. Popular at Keene High School\, an accomplished pianist and member of the Dramatic Club\, acting in productions at Northfield Seminary and Oberlin College\, she worked as a fashion model in New York City while studying acting\, and at this time became June Vincent. After a brief stint on Broadway\, she found herself under contract with Universal Pictures\, where she began to make B movies\, in 1943. She made over two dozen films in her career\, working with Loretta Young\, Boris Karloff\, Humphrey Bogart\, Linda Darnell\, Judy Canova\, and Robert Cummings \nIn the opinion of many\, her best film role was as Catherine Bennett in the cult 1946 film noir\, Black Angel\, which we will be screening this evening\, based on the novel by the crime noir author Cornell Woolrich\, and co-starring Dan Duryea\, Ava Gardner and Peter Lorre. \nThis strange film\, a reworking of Woolrich’s story\, in a way which takes the edge off of Vincent’s ability to show her tough\, bare-knuckled side. Nevertheless\, Vincent’s morphing from docile housewife to street-smart survivor in Black Angel is remarkable.

DESCRIPTION:Wyman Tavern Lecture Series: Indigenous people\, history and culture into the 21st century \nBasket Day \nSaturday\, November 3\, 2018.  10am-4pm.  Historical Society of Cheshire County \nBasket Identification Day \nDo you have old baskets tucked away in your attic or closets?  Think they may be Native American?  If you know their history\, or are curious to find out more about them\, please join us on Saturday\, November 3 for Basket Identification Day. The program has been made possible through a grant by New Hampshire Humanities. Three basket-making experts will be on-hand from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm to tell you more about your baskets and complete a documentation form\, including a photo. Bring up to three baskets for our basket makers to evaluate. Our experts will speak to you about the historical and cultural value of your baskets.  Monetary appraisals will not be given. \nWe are particularly interested in documenting baskets made locally. Did you know that there were Abenaki basket-making families living in Keene and Claremont in the past? One of the basket experts\, Lynn Murphy\, is a descendant of the M’Sadoques family who made and sold baskets in Keene. Liz Charlebois of Warner is an Abenaki basket maker who will provide her expertise. Our third basket maker\, Linda Hartman\, is very knowledgeable about many types of baskets from around the world. \nThe day will end with a presentation at 4:00 pm by two basket experts. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 2\, 2018.   4pm-6pm.     Historical Society of Cheshire County \nOpening Reception of Quilt Show \n“Any road to creativity starts with finding a place in yourself that is absolutely honest. Why stitcheries? By working with pieces of unwanted fabric\, I take what is discarded but still beautiful\, and\, by arranging and juxtaposing textures\, colors\, and patterns\, seek to compose something fresh. It is a kind of meditation\, my hands sensing the threads\, my eyes enjoying and evaluating the colors and patterns\, then uniting these disparate scraps into a dynamic whole. Creating something strong out of fragments. A new understanding.”    Anne Francisco\, Fiber Artist \nAnne Francisco\, Fiber Artist\, creates expansive\, beautiful\, dynamic quilts from discarded fragments.  Her artistic and discerning eye finds a way for these pieces to fly together in tiny and large parts to form a composition at the same time\, traditional and contemporary. She uses only her hands! Every stitch is sewn by hand\, even the quilted back pieces. The composite offers the eye a feast of movement\, color\, energy and expert design. \nA show of Francisco’s quilts entitled “Regenerating Fragments” opens on Friday\, November 2 at the Historical Society. The public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on November 2. The quilts will be on view at the Historical Society through December 2018. \nThese quilts speak to our present and our history. The art form is ancient\, yet the execution is clearly fresh and of our age. Anne’s work respects heritage\, community\, antique elements\, and history\, yet she magically transforms the components into a new and contemporary flash of design and color. The show also includes a wedding quilt made by Francisco’s paternal great-grandmother and a quilt made by her maternal great-grandmother in a quilting bee. \nFrancisco’s subjects are dragons\, spirals\, geometric whirls\, simple shapes\, and complex grids.  Her colors work together\, but are fashioned from old shirts\, pants\, hankies\, and whatever enters her realm. Friends and family provide the raw materials. Anne works magic. \nThis exhibit refers to the essence of New England and one of its oldest crafts and art forms. It speaks to community tradition of quilting together and using all things\, wasting none. The method of using one’s hands so determinedly and so fully hearkens the New England work ethic.  The Historical Society of Cheshire County is a perfect setting for such a display of heritage and tradition gone modern.

DESCRIPTION:October 19-October 21\, 2018.  The Inn at East Hill Farm \nFinnFunn Weekend  \nThe Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy\, NH\, announces the return of FinnFunn Weekend.  This celebration of Finnish culture draws over 300 people from around the northeast and is filled with presentations\, music\, dance\, workshops\, farm activities\, demonstrations\, films\, handicrafts\, and food.  The annual event seeks to promote and preserve Finnish American heritage and provide an educational learning environment and active social interaction for its attendees.  Non-Finns are invited to join in the fun.  Rates can be for a full weekend of activities or a single day\, with our without a stay at the Inn.  For more info: click here or call 1-800-242-6495.

DESCRIPTION:WYMAN TAVERN LECTURE SERIES: INDIGENOUS PEOPLE\, HISTORY AND CULTURE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY \nSunday\, October 7\, 2018.  2pm.   Colonial Theatre \nFilm:  A Good Day to Die (2010) \nA Good Day to Die is a 2010 documentary that chronicles the American Indian Movement (AIM) that fought for the civil rights of American Indians.  By recounting the life story of Dennis Banks (The Last of the Mohicans\, War Party)\, the Native American who co-founded AIM in 1968 to advocate and protect the rights of American Indians\, the film provides an in-depth look at the history and issues surrounding its formation. From the forced assimilation of Native Americans within boarding schools\, to discrimination by law enforcement authorities\, to neglect by government officials responsible for the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, AIM sought redress for the many grievances that its people harbored.  This film is shown as a collaborative series between the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Colonial Theatre of Keene\, showcasing the history and culture of Native Peoples. \n \n
