DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 2\, 2018.   4pm-6pm.     Historical Society of Cheshire County \nOpening Reception of Quilt Show \n“Any road to creativity starts with finding a place in yourself that is absolutely honest. Why stitcheries? By working with pieces of unwanted fabric\, I take what is discarded but still beautiful\, and\, by arranging and juxtaposing textures\, colors\, and patterns\, seek to compose something fresh. It is a kind of meditation\, my hands sensing the threads\, my eyes enjoying and evaluating the colors and patterns\, then uniting these disparate scraps into a dynamic whole. Creating something strong out of fragments. A new understanding.”    Anne Francisco\, Fiber Artist \nAnne Francisco\, Fiber Artist\, creates expansive\, beautiful\, dynamic quilts from discarded fragments.  Her artistic and discerning eye finds a way for these pieces to fly together in tiny and large parts to form a composition at the same time\, traditional and contemporary. She uses only her hands! Every stitch is sewn by hand\, even the quilted back pieces. The composite offers the eye a feast of movement\, color\, energy and expert design. \nA show of Francisco’s quilts entitled “Regenerating Fragments” opens on Friday\, November 2 at the Historical Society. The public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on November 2. The quilts will be on view at the Historical Society through December 2018. \nThese quilts speak to our present and our history. The art form is ancient\, yet the execution is clearly fresh and of our age. Anne’s work respects heritage\, community\, antique elements\, and history\, yet she magically transforms the components into a new and contemporary flash of design and color. The show also includes a wedding quilt made by Francisco’s paternal great-grandmother and a quilt made by her maternal great-grandmother in a quilting bee. \nFrancisco’s subjects are dragons\, spirals\, geometric whirls\, simple shapes\, and complex grids.  Her colors work together\, but are fashioned from old shirts\, pants\, hankies\, and whatever enters her realm. Friends and family provide the raw materials. Anne works magic. \nThis exhibit refers to the essence of New England and one of its oldest crafts and art forms. It speaks to community tradition of quilting together and using all things\, wasting none. The method of using one’s hands so determinedly and so fully hearkens the New England work ethic.  The Historical Society of Cheshire County is a perfect setting for such a display of heritage and tradition gone modern.

DESCRIPTION:WYMAN TAVERN LECTURE SERIES: INDIGENOUS PEOPLE\, HISTORY AND CULTURE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY \nSunday\, October 7\, 2018.  2pm.   Colonial Theatre \nFilm:  A Good Day to Die (2010) \nA Good Day to Die is a 2010 documentary that chronicles the American Indian Movement (AIM) that fought for the civil rights of American Indians.  By recounting the life story of Dennis Banks (The Last of the Mohicans\, War Party)\, the Native American who co-founded AIM in 1968 to advocate and protect the rights of American Indians\, the film provides an in-depth look at the history and issues surrounding its formation. From the forced assimilation of Native Americans within boarding schools\, to discrimination by law enforcement authorities\, to neglect by government officials responsible for the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, AIM sought redress for the many grievances that its people harbored.  This film is shown as a collaborative series between the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the Colonial Theatre of Keene\, showcasing the history and culture of Native Peoples. \n \n

SUMMARY:Annual Candlelight Open House on Main Street
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 5\, 2018.  7pm-8:30pm.  Wyman Tavern & Horatio Colony House Museum\, Main St. \nAnnual Candlelight Open House on Main Street \nJourney back into the 18th and 19th centuries on Friday\, October 5th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Two of Keene’s historic Main Street homes\, the Wyman Tavern and Horatio Colony House Museum\, will hold candlelight open houses from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This great family event offers an opportunity to view the warmth and charm of these two Keene landmarks as they were before electricity – lit only with candles. The Wyman Tavern at 339 Main Street was built in 1762 and used as a tavern by the Wyman family for more than 40 years.  With reenactors stationed in each room\, visitors to the Tavern can play Colonial games of chance\, meet Abner Sanger\, and tour the house. \nThe Horatio Colony House Museum at 199 Main Street is a Federal style home built in 1806 by Abel Blake\, son of one of Keene’s first settlers.  In the late 19th century\, it became the home of a branch of the Colony family connected with the Faulkner Colony Woolen Mill on West Street and the Cheshire Mill in Harrisville. Horatio Colony II was the last of the family to live in the house which is filled with original family furnishings and collections from around the world\, spanning the 18th through late 19th century. The home is completely intact\, reflecting three generations of the family living for 130 years. \nThese collaborative candlelight open houses are free and open to the public. Offering more than just history; this three-part series also gives you the present and future of farming in our region. Held in partnership with the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, an evening of presentation and celebration is planned. Alan Rumrill\, director of the HSCC\, will present on the history of local farming and agriculture and its impact on today’s culture and landscape. Susie O’Dwyer will talk next about cheese-making on her farm in Harrisville. Lastly\, Carl Majewski will provide an overview of agriculture in Cheshire County today\, with a discussion of some of the issues and opportunities area farmers face. Carl has been with UNH Cooperative Extension since 2002\, where he works as the county Field Specialist in Food and Agriculture. \nWorkshop to be held at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene\, Friday September 21\, 7 – 9 pm. SUMMARY:The Elephant God in the Monadnock Region
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 13\, 2018.   6:30pm-7:30pm.   Historical Society of Cheshire County. \nCelebrating Ganesh\, the elephant-headed God in the Monadnock Region \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County \n  For almost 50 years\, the Monadnock Region has been home to a shrine honoring Ganesh\, the Hindu lord with an elephant head.  In 2017\, the property in around the white quartz shrine in Chesterfield was placed in conservation thanks to the generosity of property-owner Pat Haley with help of the Monadnock Conservancy.  The public is invited to discover the history of the shrine with guest speakers Pat Haley and James Rousmaniere who will describe how the shrine came to be built. Learn about the Conservancy’s current plans to preserve the land with stewardship manager Rebecca DiGirolomo.  \nSeptember 13\, 2018\, is also Ganesh Chathurthi\, the festival for many Hindus to celebrate the famous elephant god who is broadly known for helping overcome obstacles.  Ritu and Vikas Budakoti of the Keene India Association will introduce the history of the holiday and describe India’s current effort to restructure it as an eco-friendly event.    A troupe of teenage classical Indian dancers will perform a dance in honor of Ganesh Chathurthi. \n  \npainting by Dorinda Jarest circa 1973

DESCRIPTION:Meet Abner Sanger and a couple of Keene’s 18th century young women on Saturday\, July 28th at 2pm.  Sanger is best known as Keene’s jack-of-all-trades (and town gossip!) who lived across the street from Isaac and Sarah Wyman in the late 1700s.  Today\, his diary acts as the preeminent resource for understanding daily life in Keene during the late 18th-early 19th century and is the inspiration for the performances.  JJ Prior will portray Sanger in the year 1774 while Emilia Whippie-Prior and Alexa Wallace will portray two friends who meet at the Wyman Tavern over tea to discuss their differing political points of view. \nPerformance will be preceded by a 1pm tour of the Wyman Tavern with educator Meghan Green who will give a special tour on the role of women in 18th century taverns. \nPerformance Admission is $5/person.  Specialized Tour & Performance is $10/person.  Space is limited.  RSVP to the Historical Society at 603.352.1895 or dired@hsccnh.org.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 18\, 2018.  7pm.  FREE.  Historical Society of Cheshire County. \nFirst shown at the Scenic Theatre in Keene\, July 24th and 25\, 1918\, The Whispering Choris was directed by Cecil B. DeMille and written by actress/screenwriter Jeanie Macpherson. \nThe Whispering Chorus is a tightly-written melodrama\, the story of John Tremble\, a man whose life is governed by urges which are externalized onto the screen through DeMille’s use of double exposure. A series of bad decisions\, driven largely by his desire to give his family a more secure financial footing\, takes Tremble through a nearly-surreal downfall to a strange and tragic redemption. The acting is excellent\, making the improbable story very powerful. \nWith The Whispering Chorus we will show Shoulder Arms\, Charlie Chaplin’s short comedy\, set on the battlefields of the First World War\, and shown in Keene December 10th\, 1918\, at both the Scenic and the Majestic theatres. Shoulder Arms was released on October 27th\, two weeks before the Armistice was declared. It shows Chaplin at the height of his popularity\, and also stars Edna Purviance\, and Syd Chaplin\, Charlie’s brother.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 20.  7pm.  Historical Society of Cheshire County.  FREE \nSilent Film:  Stella Maris (1918) \nStella Maris was first screened in Keene\, NH\, at the Scenic Theatre on April 17th and 18th\, 1918. One hundred years later\, the Society is showing the film again followed by a discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist. \nStarring Mary Pickford in one of her very best films\, in which she plays two roles\, and\, without makeup\, makes herself nearly unrecognizable as Unity Blake\, the wealthy Stella Maris’ impoverished companion. The script was written by Frances Marion\, based on a novel by William J. Locke. Marion\, one of the most powerful women in Hollywood\, wrote nearly two hundred scripts\, including such classics as Dinner at Eight. The script seems to have been influenced by the World War which was then raging; America had entered the war the year before: by May 1918\, more than a million American soldiers would have landed in Europe. Stella Maris was directed by Marshall Neilan\, who directed five films which starred Pickford\, and which were scripted by Marion. \nStella is a rich young woman\, paralyzed her entire life\, cared for by a wealthy family who attempt to shield her from the evils of the world. By contrast\, Unity is a poor orphan\, seeking a mother figure\, who is adopted by a woman who treats her savagely. Both Stella and Unity fall in love with the same man. This is a finely nuanced film which uses the framework of melodrama to display some unforgettable acting. Many consider this film Mary Pickford’s best work.
