SUMMARY:Live at the Tavern in 1774
DESCRIPTION:Meet Abner Sanger and a couple of Keene’s 18th century young women on Saturday\, June 30th at 2pm.  Sanger is best known as Keene’s jack-of-all-trades (and town gossip!) who lived across the street from Isaac and Sarah Wyman in the late 1700s.  Today\, his diary acts as the preeminent resource for understanding daily life in Keene during the late 18th-early 19th century and is the inspiration for the performances.  JJ Prior will portray Sanger in the year 1774 while Emilia Whippie-Prior and Alexa Wallace will portray two friends who meet at the Wyman Tavern over tea to discuss their differing political points of view. \nPerformance will be preceded by a 1pm tour of the Wyman Tavern with educator Meghan Green who will give a special tour on the role of women in 18th century taverns. \nPerformance Admission is $5/person.  Specialized Tour & Performance is $10/person.  Space is limited.  RSVP to the Historical Society at 603.352.1895 or dired@hsccnh.org.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 20.  7pm.  Historical Society of Cheshire County.  FREE \nSilent Film:  Stella Maris (1918) \nStella Maris was first screened in Keene\, NH\, at the Scenic Theatre on April 17th and 18th\, 1918. One hundred years later\, the Society is showing the film again followed by a discussion with film historian Larry Benaquist. \nStarring Mary Pickford in one of her very best films\, in which she plays two roles\, and\, without makeup\, makes herself nearly unrecognizable as Unity Blake\, the wealthy Stella Maris’ impoverished companion. The script was written by Frances Marion\, based on a novel by William J. Locke. Marion\, one of the most powerful women in Hollywood\, wrote nearly two hundred scripts\, including such classics as Dinner at Eight. The script seems to have been influenced by the World War which was then raging; America had entered the war the year before: by May 1918\, more than a million American soldiers would have landed in Europe. Stella Maris was directed by Marshall Neilan\, who directed five films which starred Pickford\, and which were scripted by Marion. \nStella is a rich young woman\, paralyzed her entire life\, cared for by a wealthy family who attempt to shield her from the evils of the world. By contrast\, Unity is a poor orphan\, seeking a mother figure\, who is adopted by a woman who treats her savagely. Both Stella and Unity fall in love with the same man. This is a finely nuanced film which uses the framework of melodrama to display some unforgettable acting. Many consider this film Mary Pickford’s best work.

SUMMARY:All Around Monadnock Art Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 1\, from 4 to 6 pm\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host a reception in Keene for the opening of its art exhibit\, All Around Monadnock: The Character and Heritage of the Monadnock Region.  Over fifty artists submitted artworks for the juried exhibition\, which will celebrate the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Monadnock region. The exhibit will run from June 1 through September 7 at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street in Keene. Admission to the Historical Society is free of charge. \nThe public is invited to the opening of the All Around Monadnock exhibit\, and visitors can expect to see the work of some of the Monadnock region’s preeminent artists as well as some of its rising stars.  The artwork will include oil paintings\, watercolors\, acrylics\, pastels\, photography\, and mixed media. The artists have been encouraged to create works that illustrate what the region means to them and how it impacts their own lives.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 16\, 2018.  7pm.   \nDocumentary & Discussion:  Lost in Laconia (2010) \nDuring a time when people who were branded and stigmatized as “feebleminded” and a danger to society were banished to a life of isolation and total segregation\, thousands of children and adults were institutionalized in large state operated institutions throughout the country. In the case of New Hampshire\, that place was the Laconia State School. This documentary traces the history of the institution from its initial beginnings as the New Hampshire School for the Feebleminded in the early 1900’s until its closure in 1991. Using archival footage and current interviews with former residents of the institution\, families of former residents\, and people who worked at the institution\, along with an extensive collection of photos\, newspaper articles\, and state documents\, this documentary examines the social values and cultural ideals of the twentieth century\, relative to individuals and families who were labeled “feebleminded\,” deficient\, or disabled in New Hampshire.  Join the Historical Society of Cheshire County on Wednesday\, May 16th at 7pm for the film and a discussion with one of the film’s writers and former employee of the Laconia State School\, Gordon Dubois\, as well as Keene State College professor Graham Warder who was interviewed in the film and Staff from Monadnock Developmental Services.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Cheshire County to Break Ground on Construction Project
DESCRIPTION:A year from now\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will open a Cultural Heritage Center on Keene’s Main Street. The Cultural Heritage Center will be a destination that people will want to come back to again and again. It will be family friendly and hands on. It will be participatory\, not passive. It will be about art\, music\, dance\, crafts\, gardening\, cooking\, games\, and yes\, history. When visitors walk into the welcome center through a handicap-accessible entrance\, they will immediately begin to be transported into the past. They will receive an orientation to make them feel welcome\, to provide some context\, and to let them know what’s going on that day. They might take a tour of the Wyman Tavern\, or a class such as how to build a wattle fence\, or attend an event such as a living history festival\, or participate in an activity such as traditional hearth cooking. \nThe Cultural Heritage Center vision will reach a milestone on May 15 at 11:30 am; on that day\, the community is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony at the Bruder House\, a brick building built in 1839 that is located adjacent to the Historical Society’s Wyman Tavern Museum. The Historical Society purchased the Bruder House from Keene State College in February to be used as a welcome center and educational venue for a Cultural Heritage Center campus. The groundbreaking ceremony will mark the start of a renovation project at the Bruder House to include classroom and meeting space\, storage space\, a covered porch\, and an outdoor function area. A brick walkway will connect the Bruder House to the Wyman Tavern as a campus for programs of the Historical Society. It is fitting that the Bruder House will be integrated with the Wyman Tavern\, because the Bruder House lot was part of the Wyman Tavern property when Captain Isaac Wyman and his family operated the building as a tavern in the 1700s. \nThe renovation project at the Bruder House was made possible by a recently completed capital fund campaign — Investing in Our History\, Enhancing Our Future. More than 215 individuals\, couples\, private companies\, and foundations contributed to the campaign\, as did the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). The capital campaign also raised funds for the historical rehabilitation of the Wyman Tavern in 2016\, and improvements to the Society’s headquarters the Ball Mansion that are expected to be completed in 2019. \nThe project is the culmination of a process that began about five years ago when the Trustees of the Historical Society of Cheshire County decided that more space was needed to accommodate the Society’s expanded range of educational and cultural programs. The Historical Society envisions that the number of its visitors could double as a result of the expansions in facilities and programs. \nThe groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the Bruder House\, 349 Main Street in Keene at 11:30 am on Tuesday\, May 15.
