SUMMARY:NH Film Series : Lost in Laconia
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 16\, 2018.  7pm.   \nDocumentary & Discussion:  Lost in Laconia (2010) \nDuring a time when people who were branded and stigmatized as “feebleminded” and a danger to society were banished to a life of isolation and total segregation\, thousands of children and adults were institutionalized in large state operated institutions throughout the country. In the case of New Hampshire\, that place was the Laconia State School. This documentary traces the history of the institution from its initial beginnings as the New Hampshire School for the Feebleminded in the early 1900’s until its closure in 1991. Using archival footage and current interviews with former residents of the institution\, families of former residents\, and people who worked at the institution\, along with an extensive collection of photos\, newspaper articles\, and state documents\, this documentary examines the social values and cultural ideals of the twentieth century\, relative to individuals and families who were labeled “feebleminded\,” deficient\, or disabled in New Hampshire.  Join the Historical Society of Cheshire County on Wednesday\, May 16th at 7pm for the film and a discussion with one of the film’s writers and former employee of the Laconia State School\, Gordon Dubois\, as well as Keene State College professor Graham Warder who was interviewed in the film and Staff from Monadnock Developmental Services.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Cheshire County to Break Ground on Construction Project
DESCRIPTION:A year from now\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will open a Cultural Heritage Center on Keene’s Main Street. The Cultural Heritage Center will be a destination that people will want to come back to again and again. It will be family friendly and hands on. It will be participatory\, not passive. It will be about art\, music\, dance\, crafts\, gardening\, cooking\, games\, and yes\, history. When visitors walk into the welcome center through a handicap-accessible entrance\, they will immediately begin to be transported into the past. They will receive an orientation to make them feel welcome\, to provide some context\, and to let them know what’s going on that day. They might take a tour of the Wyman Tavern\, or a class such as how to build a wattle fence\, or attend an event such as a living history festival\, or participate in an activity such as traditional hearth cooking. \nThe Cultural Heritage Center vision will reach a milestone on May 15 at 11:30 am; on that day\, the community is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony at the Bruder House\, a brick building built in 1839 that is located adjacent to the Historical Society’s Wyman Tavern Museum. The Historical Society purchased the Bruder House from Keene State College in February to be used as a welcome center and educational venue for a Cultural Heritage Center campus. The groundbreaking ceremony will mark the start of a renovation project at the Bruder House to include classroom and meeting space\, storage space\, a covered porch\, and an outdoor function area. A brick walkway will connect the Bruder House to the Wyman Tavern as a campus for programs of the Historical Society. It is fitting that the Bruder House will be integrated with the Wyman Tavern\, because the Bruder House lot was part of the Wyman Tavern property when Captain Isaac Wyman and his family operated the building as a tavern in the 1700s. \nThe renovation project at the Bruder House was made possible by a recently completed capital fund campaign — Investing in Our History\, Enhancing Our Future. More than 215 individuals\, couples\, private companies\, and foundations contributed to the campaign\, as did the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). The capital campaign also raised funds for the historical rehabilitation of the Wyman Tavern in 2016\, and improvements to the Society’s headquarters the Ball Mansion that are expected to be completed in 2019. \nThe project is the culmination of a process that began about five years ago when the Trustees of the Historical Society of Cheshire County decided that more space was needed to accommodate the Society’s expanded range of educational and cultural programs. The Historical Society envisions that the number of its visitors could double as a result of the expansions in facilities and programs. \nThe groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the Bruder House\, 349 Main Street in Keene at 11:30 am on Tuesday\, May 15. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 9\, 2018.  7pm.   Free.  Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene. \nBook Signing with Sally Maude \nSally Maude will be at the Historical Society of Cheshire County on May 9th at 7pm to discuss her new book Oh\, My Word.  In her memoir\, Ms. Maude shares her life as an identical twin in a small New Hampshire city.  The reader is invited to experience her adventures as she journeys through self-identity.  There is humor throughout as the reader is fascinated by ESP between twins.  The excitement of travel\, love of art\, and the business successes are conscripted by this risk-taker.  Follow the years of a happy childhood; the contentment of senior citizen years with a few ups and downs along the way….knowing in the end\, “one can come home again”.  Ms. Maude will sign copies of her book following her presentation.

SUMMARY:Great Finnish Bread Bake-Off
DESCRIPTION:The Great Finnish Bread Bake-Off will be held on Sunday\, April 29 from 3-5 pm. Last year over 100 people attended the event to taste-test varieties of the Finnish cardamom bread called nisu or pulla. The event was so successful that the organizers decided to move it to a bigger venue this year –The Inn at East Hill Farm\, 460 Monadnock Road in Troy\, New Hampshire.\n\n\nAdmission to the bake-off is $7 for adults\, $3 children (5-14)\, 4 and under free\, with a $20 cap per family. Tickets for the event may be purchased in advance by visiting the Historical Society at 246 Main Street\, Keene\, NH. Admission comes with a ballot allowing the public to vote for their favorite recipe to win a People’s Choice award. The event will also include beverages provided by the Inn at East Hill Farm\, bread making tips and demonstrations\, music\, and a tricky tray auction. Proceeds from the event support the Historical Society’s educational programming\, which is dedicated to celebrating the variety of cultures and talents that make up Cheshire County. \n\n\n \n\n\nThis year’s bake-off is co-sponsored by the Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja and the Historical Society of Cheshire County. The Finnish Heritage Society-Sovittaja is a nonprofit social\, cultural and charitable organization devoted to promoting scholarship and Finnish heritage and culture. The son of a slave\, Potter became a nationally recognized magician and ventriloquist in the first half of the 19th century. In his later years\, he purchased a large farm in Andover\, New Hampshire. Hodgson will have copies of his book for sale at the event.

DESCRIPTION:Film Discussion \nWednesday\, March 28\, 2018.  7pm. \nDocumentary & Discussion:   King of Kong: Fistfull of Quarters \nRobbie Lakeman of Manchester\, New Hampshire\, is the current world champion of the classic arcade game of Donkey Kong.  He will be the special guest speaker at the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s viewing of the 2007 documentary King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters.   The film chronicles the lives of a middle-school science teacher and a hot sauce mogul as they vie for the world record in the early 21st century.  With scenes filmed in Laconia\, New Hampshire\, at Weirs Beach’s Funspot\, King of Kong has become a cult classic to many film-goers and an inspiration to gamers.  Lakeman\, who grew up in Concord\, often visited Funspot as a child and was drawn to the arcade game that has\, today\, put him in the Guinness Book of World Records. Although Lakeman does not star in King of Kong\, he was featured in the 2016 film Kong Off\, another film about Donkey Kong championships. This annual bus trip begins with and early lunch at Kipling’s Restaurant and Pub in Brattleboro\, VT\, before heading to the home of Rudyard Kipling in Dummerston. “Naulakha” (jewel without price) is where Kipling wrote his famous works Captains Courageous and The Jungle Books. Take a private tour of the home and enjoy a special presentation of Just-So stories by Rudyard Kipling himself! Bus leaves promptly at 11 am from the parking lot of the Historical Society. Plan to return around 3:00pm. Reservations are $30 per person for transportation\, tour of the house\, and the performance. Participants pay for their own lunches. For reservations call 603/352-1895.
