DESCRIPTION:Special Event\nSaturday\, March 3\, 2018\nFestival of Color- Holi \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main St.\nCelebrating the arrival of spring\, Holi (also called Holaka or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India\, Nepal\, and Bangladesh in March. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly cultural celebration at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, in Keene on Saturday\, March 3th at 12pm. Co-hosted by the Keene India Association\, members of the regions Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival\, involving an evil King\, his determined son\, a malicious aunt Holika\, and the Hindu god Vishnu. Families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other. The Society recommends that participants wear old clothes\, dress warmly\, and bring a towel to brush off powders at the end of the event. \nThis Event Has SOLD OUT.

DESCRIPTION:Italian Love Songs with Salvatore Basile \nItalian-born singer Salvatore Basile came to America when he was three years old on the ship Andrea Doria\, which sank three years later. He recalls developing his love of music as a teenager while listening to his father sing Italian love songs to his mother. It is his father “who showed me with his voice and guitar the beauty and power of music!” Now a resident of Wethersfield\, CT\, Basile sings in the rock band Dually Noted while also performing Italian songs as a soloist. On Saturday\, February 17th at 2pm Basile shares the power of traditional Italian music with the Monadnock region by performing Italian love songs for the Valentine’s Day season. Each song is contextualized in English prior to singing in Italian. Tickets are $15/person and only $10/person for members of the Historical Society of Cheshire County . SUMMARY:Holiday Traditions Potluck
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County is hosting a Holiday Traditions Potluck on Saturday\, December 16 from noon to 1:30 pm. In the style of a “pop up exhibit” the theme of the event will be holiday recipe traditions. Community members are invited to bring dishes that have special meaning to their families. Participants will share their dishes and swap stories about their families’ holiday traditions. Holiday recipes can range from any time of the year and any food culture traditions.\n\nJenna Carroll\, the director of education at the Historical Society\, hopes the event will celebrate the mosaic of cultures that make up Cheshire County. Carroll says\, “We tested the idea of a pop up potluck at the Historical Society in September\, and we were very pleased with the outcome. There were recipes that had been passed down in families for generations. We had Finnish pannukakku\, Italian ravioli\, Lebanese salad\, and Indian curry. I remember one of the participants saying she never thought she would have spent so much time sharing stories with someone who wasn’t like her.”\n\nAdmission is free for anyone who brings a dish to share\, and the Historical Society will collect the recipes to be published in a cookbook of Cheshire County traditions. Children and adults\, alike\, will create straw-plaited holiday ornaments and Christmas tonttu (elves) to take home. \n  \nWork Shop 1 on Saturday\, November 18th from 10am-12pm master craftsman Lark Leonard will conduct a straw-plaited ornament workshop. Participants will learn about the harvesting of grain\, and the expressions of gratitude for the harvest in Finland and Sweden\, before making their own Christmas ornament to bring home. Straw-plaiting is a custom many centuries old and is used as a way of thanking the earth for its abundance. Ms. Leonard is a folk ornament-maker from Langdon\, NH who has been a member of the League of NH Craftsmen and the Hannah Grimes Center in Keene.   The workshop will take place at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street in Keene. This workshop is limited to 12 people.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Register by calling 603.352.1895 or visiting the Society during normal business hours. \n  \nWorkshop 2 on December 7th from 4pm-6pm local Finnish historian Zachary Giroux will lead a children’s story and craft hour focused on the mythical elves known in Finland as Tonttu. Learn the story of the elves that watch over local farms and their animals and\, together with the Yule goat Julbocken\, bring presents to good boys and girls throughout Finland at Christmastime. DESCRIPTION:Date:  Wednesday\, November 15 \nEvent:  Presentation: “Collective Memories of Race in the American Revolution and Civil War” \nTime:  7 pm \nLocation: Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main St.\, Keene \nAdmission:  Free \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County to Host Presentation on Collective Memories of Race \n  \nOn Wednesday\, November 15 at 7 pm the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host a presentation on “Collective Memories of Race in the American Revolution and Civil War.” Two history professors from Keene State College\, Gregory Knouff and Graham Warder\, will talk about intersections of race and memory in United States history. Their presentation will be a reprise of a talk they gave in September at a “teach-in” at Keene State College. \n  \nProfessor Graham Warder teaches 19th-century U.S. history including the Civil War. His emphasis is on social and cultural history. Warder expects a lively discussion after the presentation. “People have strong opinions about Civil War memory\,” he says\, “and specifically about monuments and what to do about them.” \n  \nWarder points out that there is a difference between the terms “history” and “memory” and the “history of memory.” Memory is often more selective and dependent on current political issues and context. “There’s a lot of remembering\, a lot of forgetting\, and a lot of rewriting of what happened\,” says Warder. \n  \nProfessor Gregory Knouff teaches about the North American and Atlantic World in the 17th and 18th centuries. His specialties are colonial and revolutionary North America. Knouff will talk about how concepts of history change over time. Knouff says\, “Most people think of the American Revolution as a unified struggle for the greater good\, but that’s inaccurate. Americans were deeply divided\, and slavery was a major issue.” He adds\, “Tens of thousands of slaves sought their freedom in the American Revolution.” \n  \nKnouff hopes that the presentation will lead people to reflect on the complexity of history and simple collective memories. DESCRIPTION:Historic Gravestone Rededication \nPlease join the Historical Society of Cheshire County and the City of Keene as we rededicate the gravestone of 9-year-old Betty Clark.  Betty died in 1761 and was buried at the Ash Swamp Cemetery in West Keene.  Her stone\, removed more than 130 years ago\, was recently found and returned to its original site in the cemetery. \n  \nBetty’s gravestone was found in the front steps at a historic home near the cemetery when the owner was repairing the steps. Someone probably removed it\, or it had fallen\, and they simply took it to use as a doorstep at the house. The Historical Society worked with the City of Keene to return the stone to the cemetery\, adjacent to the slate stone of her father Simeon Clark. Betty Clark died on March 9\, 1761\, more than 250 years ago\, when Keene was a small farming community of less than 400 residents. \n  \nHer stone will be rededicated in a ceremony at the Ash Swamp Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on November 14.  At that event Historical Society executive director Alan Rumrill will speak briefly about Betty’s story\, the history of the cemetery\, and the discovery and replacement of the stone. The Rev. Elsa Worth of St. James Episcopal Church will consecrate the grave and offer brief prayers of committal.  The public is invited to attend.  The cemetery is located on West Street near the Keene Country Club.

The program is co-sponsored by the Marlow Historical Society. The Hope Diamond Mystery is based on the life story written by May Yohé who lived for a time in Marlow\, New Hampshire. In 1894 Yohé\, an American musical theater actress\, married Lord Francis Hope and possessed the Hope Diamond. She divorced Lord Francis in 1902\, and Lord Francis later sold the diamond to pay off debts. \n  \nThe Hope Diamond Mystery was a fifteen-part serial about “the most sinister jewel in history.” A curse follows the diamond bringing tragedy and heartbreak to all who possess it. In the forty-minute episode to be shown at the Historical Society\, Boris Karloff stars in his first major screen role as the Hindu servant Dakar. \n  \nAt the Historical Society’s screening Larry Benaquist – film maker and Keene State College professor – will talk about the history of the film. Local historian Tracy Messer will talk about May Yohé and her connections to Marlow\, New Hampshire. \n  \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is located at 246 Main Street in Keene. SUMMARY:Civil War Walking Tour with William Marvel
DESCRIPTION:Civil War historian and author William Marvel will lead a Civil War walk in Keene’s Woodland and Greenlawn Cemeteries at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 14.  Marvel\, author of An End to Innocence\, Cheshire County Faces the Civil War\, will discuss Keene’s experience in the War by visiting the graves of representatives of the various factions.  At the graves of politicians\, soldiers\, and civilians he will discuss their respective viewpoints on the major issues of the day\, the factors that may have influenced their positions\, the motives behind their service (or their failure to serve)\, and the reasons for their support of (or opposition to) the war. As we migrate from the older portion of the cemetery to the newer sections we will drift into the postwar era\, reflecting on how the decisions men made in the 1860s influenced their futures.  Questions will be entertained at each stop. \n  \nThe book An End to Innocence will be available for purchase and signing by the author.  This event is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Cheshire County and S.G. Griffin Camp #10\, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. \n  \nWe will meet at the Beaver Street entrance to the cemetery at 11:00 a.m.  Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and an umbrella\, if needed. The walk will last about an hour.  Parking is on Washington Street or on side streets near Beaver Street. \n
