For more info\, call (603) 352-2033. \nLocation: at the Showroom\, 20 Commercial St.\, Keene. \nPhoto: An original release poster for ‘The Old Homestead’ (1922)\, produced by Paramount Pictures. \nIt’s been six years since local film historian Lawrence Benaquist located two early 20th century silent film versions of the “play of the century\,” The Old Homestead\, in Europe.  By the time the films were produced\, the original rural melodrama had been seen by over twenty million Americans.  Thanks to a collaboration with the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, Benaquist raised the funds to needed to return the films to the United States and have them restored.  On Saturday\, February 7th at 3pm the public will have an opportunity to see these two films plus a short documentary about their history at the Colonial Theatre Showroom in Keene\, NH. \nThe Old Homestead play was written in 1886 by Denman Thompson\, a farmer-turned-actor-turned-playwright\, from Swanzey\, NH.  It not only became a sensation\, but the play helped to shape the image of the Yankee farmer for an entire nation.  Thompson himself played the lead character\, Uncle Josh\, who must search for his son who\, accused of a crime he did not commit\, has fled to New York City.  Thompson’s play\, full of wit\, song\, and rural humor and pathos\, came to the American stage at a time when young people were fleeing the rural life for work in the big cities; when labor strife was rampant\, high unemployment\, financial depression\, hoboes roaming the country.  The rural values featured in the play and subsequent filmed versions held a great appeal for the American audiences of the late 19th century.  Excursion trains often took people to Boston expressly to see “The Old Homestead.” \nThe recently rediscovered silent films were produced by Paramount Pictures—the 1915 version having been found in Paris and the 1922 version in Belgium.  Each has now been restored through a collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\, the Royal Film Archive of Belgium\, and the Library of Congress. “The survival of one of these films would have been unlikely; the survival of both is near-miraculous\,” says Benaquist\, retired Professor of Film Studies at Keene State College.  The films will be screened in two parts at the Colonial Theatre’s Showroom.  Beginning at 3pm\, attendees will view one of the silent films followed by a short documentary by Slate Roof Films on the history of The Old Homestead. Live music accompaniment will be provided by Jeff Rapsis\, silent film musicologist and musician.  Historians Larry Benaquist and Howard Mansfield will lead a discussion following the viewing. Ticket holders who are interested in coming back at 7 pm will have the opportunity to watch the second silent film (45 minutes). \nThis event is generously sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities\, Eppes-Jefferson Foundation\, NH Charitable Foundation\, Kingsbury Fund\, Madelaine Von Weber\, and the Steadmans. \n

DESCRIPTION:Revolution\, Reaction\, & Reform in Cheshire County will open with a reception \n Friday\, November 14\, 2025 from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm\nHistorical Society of Cheshire County’s Putnam Exhibit Hall at 246 Main Street in Keene.  \n The exhibit is sponsored by the Putnam Foundation and Douglas Toys.  \nMore information: \n Revolution\, Reaction\, Reform in Cheshire County November 14\, 2025 – February 21\, 2026 \nThroughout the history of Cheshire County\, examples of revolution\, reaction\, and reform abound. Revolutionary ideas have transformed how we live. Reaction to local and national events has spurred residents to speak out and take action. Reforms implemented to remedy injustice and inequality have improved the lives of those in our community. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County invites the public to visit its latest exhibit to contemplate how Cheshire County’s history has exemplified the ideas of revolution\, reaction\, and reform and what we can take from past events as lessons for our collective future.   \nThe Society’s exhibit is based on the 2026 National History Day theme\, Revolution\, Reaction\, Reform in History. National History Day\, an organization founded in 1974\, is a project-based learning program for students in grades 6-12 who conduct research\, build historical arguments\, and craft presentations to demonstrate their work.  \nDirector of Education Michelle Walker first proposed the exhibit as an opportunity to encourage more awareness of the national program in New Hampshire.  “As the former coordinator of Rhode Island’s National History Day program\, I have seen the benefits of engaging students in in-depth historical learning.  My hope is that Monadnock region educators\, interested in having students participate\, will collaborate with the Historical Society of Cheshire County to incorporate local history resources into future student projects.”   \nRevolution\, Reaction\, & Reform in Cheshire County provides the Historical Society with an opportunity to showcase more of its collections and local history stories.  Historical items from other local libraries\, historical societies\, and residents will be included as well.  Collectively\, the artifacts and archival documents displayed will range in topics from the 18th to 21st century\, including the history of local industries\, the American Revolution\, World War II\, and local reform and protest movements.

DESCRIPTION:Guided Tour – Patriotic Stroll\nClick here to get tickets\nSeven Keene men who supported the Lexington and Concord alarm and what followed will be discussed as we walk down lower Main Street where five of the seven lived.    Would you have dropped everything and left your family to walk to Cambridge to support the patriot cause?  The British Regulars were not threatening Keene! \nJoin HSCC interpreter Becky Barton as she tries to present both sides of the American Revolutionary war\, Patriot and Loyalist\, as experienced by a few Keene men.
