DESCRIPTION:Date:  Wednesday\, October 18\, 2017 \nEvent:  The Hope Diamond and Marlow\, New Hampshire \nTime:  7 pm \nLocation: Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main St.\, Keene \nAdmission:  Free \n  \nWednesday\, October 18 at 7 pm the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host a screening of a 1921 silent film as part of its New Hampshire Film Series. The program is co-sponsored by the Marlow Historical Society. The Hope Diamond Mystery is based on the life story written by May Yohé who lived for a time in Marlow\, New Hampshire. In 1894 Yohé\, an American musical theater actress\, married Lord Francis Hope and possessed the Hope Diamond. She divorced Lord Francis in 1902\, and Lord Francis later sold the diamond to pay off debts. \n  \nThe Hope Diamond Mystery was a fifteen-part serial about “the most sinister jewel in history.” A curse follows the diamond bringing tragedy and heartbreak to all who possess it. In the forty-minute episode to be shown at the Historical Society\, Boris Karloff stars in his first major screen role as the Hindu servant Dakar. \n  \nAt the Historical Society’s screening Larry Benaquist – film maker and Keene State College professor – will talk about the history of the film. Local historian Tracy Messer will talk about May Yohé and her connections to Marlow\, New Hampshire. \n  \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is located at 246 Main Street in Keene. The organization has been collecting\, preserving\, and communicating the history of Cheshire County for 90 years. SUMMARY:Civil War Walking Tour with William Marvel
DESCRIPTION:Civil War historian and author William Marvel will lead a Civil War walk in Keene’s Woodland and Greenlawn Cemeteries at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 14.  Marvel\, author of An End to Innocence\, Cheshire County Faces the Civil War\, will discuss Keene’s experience in the War by visiting the graves of representatives of the various factions.  At the graves of politicians\, soldiers\, and civilians he will discuss their respective viewpoints on the major issues of the day\, the factors that may have influenced their positions\, the motives behind their service (or their failure to serve)\, and the reasons for their support of (or opposition to) the war. As we migrate from the older portion of the cemetery to the newer sections we will drift into the postwar era\, reflecting on how the decisions men made in the 1860s influenced their futures.  Questions will be entertained at each stop. \n  \nThe book An End to Innocence will be available for purchase and signing by the author.  This event is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Cheshire County and S.G. Griffin Camp #10\, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. \n  \nWe will meet at the Beaver Street entrance to the cemetery at 11:00 a.m.  Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and an umbrella\, if needed. The walk will last about an hour.  Parking is on Washington Street or on side streets near Beaver Street. \n

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 11.  7pm.  Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street \nDual Language Poetry Event with Chinese and Monadnock region pastoral poets. \n  \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County Hosts Dual Language Pastoral Poetry Event on October 11 \nWednesday\, October 11 at 7 pm the Historical Society of Cheshire County is hosting a dual language poetry event. Chinese pastoral poets and Monadnock pastoral poets will read poems in Mandarin and English. There will be musical interludes and a dancelike demonstration of Kung Fu as well. The event at the Historical Society\, 246 Main Street in Keene\, is being held in conjunction with a three-day colloquium at Keene State College’s Mason Library: The Magic of Monadnock\, Poetry Bridging Continents. \nRodger Martin\, Keene State College adjunct journalism professor and poet\, will introduce the poets and talk about the impact of a geographical feature (Mount Monadnock and Maoshan) on both communities. Martin says\, “Often times the word “pastoral” is misinterpreted as that of a church pastor and his or her congregation or the pastoral\, agricultural quality of a rural existence.  In the case of the Monadnock Pastoral Poets\, these poets care\, in an almost spiritual way\, for the language and the place which gave meaning to that language.”  Martin has lectured and read his own poetry in Shanghai and Nanjing. \nThe featured Chinese pastoral poets are Zi Chuan\, Chenn Yihai\, and Mi Zheng-Ying. \nZi Chuan (pen name of Zhang Rong-cai) was born in Gaoyou County\, Jiangsu Province. His works have been translated into English\, French\, German\, Japanese and Korean. He is the recipient of an Excellent Editor Award of Jiangsu Province\, the Purple Mountain Poetry Prize (2005)\, and the Third Chinese Poetry Biennial Award (2011-2012). \nChenn Yihai was born in Dongtai\, Jiangsu Province. He is Professor and Dean of the School of Chinese Language & Literature at Yancheng Teachers University (YCTU). In addition to his own publications\, he has translated many of the Western classics into Chinese. He is the recipient of the Purple Mountain Literature Award (2011). \nMi Zheng-Ying (pseudonym Blue Lotus) was born in Jiangbian\, Shaanxi Province. She is an editor in the Jurong Radio and Television Station\, Jiangsu Province. Her publications include The Mild-Climated Regions in the South of the Yangtze River (2010) and My Melancholy Seems not Blue Enough (2014). \nThe featured Monadnock pastoral poets are John Hodgen\, Susan Roney-O’Brien\, Henry Walters\, and James Beschta. \nJohn Hodgen teaches at Assumption College in Worcester\, and he has received the AWP Donald Hall Prize in Poetry and the Chad Walsh Prize in Poetry. Susan Roney-O’Brien has been chosen Poet of the Year by the New England Association of Teachers of English and has won the William and Kingman Poetry Book Award. Henry Walters from Dublin\, New Hampshire has worked as a teacher\, a naturalist\, a falconer\, and the steward of a wildlife sanctuary. He was a finalist for the 2016 Kate Tufts Discovery Award.  James Beschta teaches poetry and writing at the Worcester Art Museum and he has won Promethean Lamp and Frank O’Hara Poetry Awards. \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County is located at 246 Main Street in Keene. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 6\, 2017.  7pm-8:30pm.  Wyman Tavern & Horatio Colony House Museum\, Main St. \nAnnual Candlelight Open House on Main Street \nJourney back into the 18th and 19th centuries on Friday\, October 6th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Two of Keene’s historic Main Street homes\, the Wyman Tavern and Horatio Colony House Museum\, will hold candlelight open houses from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This great family event offers an opportunity to view the warmth and charm of these two Keene landmarks as they were before electricity – lit only with candles. The Wyman Tavern at 339 Main Street was built in 1762 and used as a tavern by the Wyman family for more than 40 years.  With reenactors stationed in each room\, visitors to the Tavern can play Colonial games of chance\, listen to some 18th century tunes\, and tour the house. \n  \nThe Horatio Colony House Museum at 199 Main Street is a Federal style home built in 1806 by Abel Blake\, son of one of Keene’s first settlers.  In the late 19th century\, it became the home of a branch of the Colony family connected with the Faulkner Colony Woolen Mill on West Street and the Cheshire Mill in Harrisville. Horatio Colony II was the last of the family to live in the house which is filled with original family furnishings and collections from around the world\, spanning the 18th through late 19th century. The home is completely intact\, reflecting three generations of the family living for 130 years. \n  \nThese collaborative candlelight open houses are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:NH Film Series 2017 : The Little American with Mary Pickford
DESCRIPTION:September 13\, 2017. 7pm. Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, Keene \nFilm: The Little American with Mary Pickford (1917) \nOne hundred years ago\, the silent film The Little American played at the Scenic Theater on Main Street in Keene from October 3rd-4th\, 1917. World War One\, by that time\, had been raging for two and a half years. Anti-German representation in numerous WWI films dominated the screen from 1917 well into 1920— political posters and political cartoons pictured the German as a beast\, a rapist\, a ravaging demon\, often holding a mostly-naked woman in its talons. The Little American is at the extreme end of this spectrum\, and as such it can be difficult to watch\, only alleviated by placing the film in the context of its time. However\, the film was popular\, and was a commercial success. One modern critic considers it “a fine\, fast paced\, early romantic war action drama.” The Little American\, directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Mary Pickford\, was released on July 12th\, 1917\, three months after America’s entry into the war. On Wednesday\, September 13th at 7pm the Historical Society of Cheshire County will show the film and host a discussion about its historical context. Discussion will be led by Keene State College film professor and documentarian Larry Benaquist. Live music by Jeff Rapsis will accompany the film. Admission is free to the public. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 9\, 2017. 9:30am-3pm. Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street. \nWorkshop: A Photographic Walk Through Time \nThe Historical Society of Cheshire County and fotoedu.org have teamed up to offer the public an opportunity to learn techniques for photographing architecture while studying local history. The full day workshop will include morning presentations of photography techniques including a brief overview of high dynamic range photography. The focus will be on black & white images and compositional approaches to architecture. The fascinating history of Keene will be highlighted by viewing period photographs of Keene houses and buildings selected from the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s vast collection of images. Additionally\, there will be a brief look into the history of camera technology available to photographers at the time these historical images were captured. \nAn afternoon walking tour in Keene will combine the historical and photographic components with the class photographing selected homes and buildings along Main St. in Keene. Selected student images may be donated to the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \nFamiliarity with camera operation is suggested but all levels of photo experience are encouraged to attend. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 2\, 2017.  11am-1pm.  Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street \nPop Up Potluck!  Family Recipes from the Old Country \n  \nThe Historical Society is hosting one of its famous Pop Up Museums and this time it’s also a potluck luncheon—the theme: Family Recipes from the Old Country.  Come to the Historical Society on Saturday\, September 2nd from 11am-1pm for this fine food event.  In lieu of an admission\, the Society requests members of the public to prepare a favorite dish using a recipe that has been passed down in their family through the generations.  Perhaps your family makes an excellent tourtiere (French meat pie)\, a scrumptious pannukakku (Finnish pancake)\, the perfect ravioli (Italian dumpling)\, or the most flavorful batch of kheer (Indian rice pudding).  Recipes can be breakfast\, lunch\, appetizer\, or dessert items. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 23\, 2017.  7pm. \nHonoring Newport\, New Hampshire’s Sunshine Peddler – Film & Performance \nOn Wednesday\, August 23 at 7pm\, the Historical Society is happy to introduce members of the Newport (NH) Historical Society to perform Billy B. Van: “The Sunshine Peddler”.  This multi-media (~60 min.) presentation brings to life a book of the same name by Jayna Hooper.  The presentation celebrates silent film star and NH entrepreneur Billy B. Van\, his many outstanding accomplishments\, and his contributions to American culture that still bear fruit today. It includes slides of his many products\, his music\, quotes in character\, and his silent short film “Plucky Hoodoo\,” filmed in the Georges Mills\, N.H. area in 1920.  As a special treat\, the Historical Society will also show Van’s 1924 short film\, “Where are Your Husbands?”.  Live music by musician Jeff Rapsis will accompany the films.  From a vaudeville and Broadway performer to author\, dairy farmer\, soap maker\, radio personality\, motivational speaker Van left sunshine in his wake during the darkest days of The Great Depression.  Questions will be welcomed after the presentation and Copies of Billy B. Van: Newport’s Sunshine Peddler will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Gregory Knouff\, Loyalists In Revolutionary America\, August 17th @ 7:00 P.M  \n“Historical stereotypes of Loyalists in the American Revolution abound. They are often maligned as traitors to their nation or simply as selfish\, wealthy conservatives who could not tolerate democratic social change. However\, Loyalists’ backgrounds\, worldviews\, and experiences were considerably more complex. Loyalists came from a variety of social\, political\, ethnic\, and religious backgrounds. What they generally had in common was a reluctance or refusal to accept Revolutionary claims to authority. Loyalists viewed the rebellion in the broader context of eighteenth-century British-American constitutional politics. In their view\, the rebels were dangerous demagogues who threatened the very essence of British liberty by attempting to overthrow balanced government. Loyalists feared that the rebels masked their own selfish desires to establish authoritarian forms of government\, particularly in the form of extralegal committees\, in the rhetoric of republicanism. This talk will discuss Loyalists’ shared experiences in facing what they viewed as their mistreatment at the hands of the real traitors their nation\, the rebels. It focuses particularly on the experience of Loyalists in New Hampshire and those in Cheshire County. It also will suggest that one of the forgotten elements of the American Revolution was that it was a bitter civil war between American political factions.” \nEvent will be held at the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s Headquarter’s at 246 Main St Keene NH

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 16\, 2017.  7pm. Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street \nPresentation- The Latchis Legacy with Jonathan A. Boschen \n  \nThe Latchis Theatre of Keene NH is well remembered by many residents of the town of \nMilford and surrounding communities\, who patronized it from it’s opening in 1923 and up until \nit’s closing in the 1980s. Despite a lot of the fun memories\, many are unaware of the theatre’s \nhistory and how it fits into the rich legacy of the Latchis Theatre chain and the legacy of the \nLatchis family. \n  \nOn August 16 at 7pm\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host a special one of a \nkind live-documentary that will visually look at how the Keene Latchis Theatre fits in with the \nother theaters built by the Latchis family and the Latchis family’s legacy. The program makes \nuse of photos of the various theaters and reconstructed architectural sketches to visualize what \nthese buildings looked like. In addition relevant history pertaining to the Latchis family\, \nAmerican film history and theatre history will also be included to help put the history of the \nLatchis Theaters into perspective. This will be the third exhibition of the program which was \nperformed first performed at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro VT and then to the Milford (NH) \nHistorical Society. The program will be hosted by film and theatre historian Jonathan A. Boschen\, who assisted with the research for the book “Greek Epic” that documents the history of the Latchis family and the Brattleboro Latchis Theatre. \nAdmission is free.
