DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 23\, 2017.  7pm. \nHonoring Newport\, New Hampshire’s Sunshine Peddler – Film & Performance \nOn Wednesday\, August 23 at 7pm\, the Historical Society is happy to introduce members of the Newport (NH) Historical Society to perform Billy B. Van: “The Sunshine Peddler”.  This multi-media (~60 min.) presentation brings to life a book of the same name by Jayna Hooper.  The presentation celebrates silent film star and NH entrepreneur Billy B. Van\, his many outstanding accomplishments\, and his contributions to American culture that still bear fruit today. It includes slides of his many products\, his music\, quotes in character\, and his silent short film “Plucky Hoodoo\,” filmed in the Georges Mills\, N.H. area in 1920.  As a special treat\, the Historical Society will also show Van’s 1924 short film\, “Where are Your Husbands?”.  Live music by musician Jeff Rapsis will accompany the films.  From a vaudeville and Broadway performer to author\, dairy farmer\, soap maker\, radio personality\, motivational speaker Van left sunshine in his wake during the darkest days of The Great Depression.  Questions will be welcomed after the presentation and Copies of Billy B. Van: Newport’s Sunshine Peddler will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Gregory Knouff\, Loyalists In Revolutionary America\, August 17th @ 7:00 P.M  \n“Historical stereotypes of Loyalists in the American Revolution abound. They are often maligned as traitors to their nation or simply as selfish\, wealthy conservatives who could not tolerate democratic social change. However\, Loyalists’ backgrounds\, worldviews\, and experiences were considerably more complex. Loyalists came from a variety of social\, political\, ethnic\, and religious backgrounds. What they generally had in common was a reluctance or refusal to accept Revolutionary claims to authority. Loyalists viewed the rebellion in the broader context of eighteenth-century British-American constitutional politics. In their view\, the rebels were dangerous demagogues who threatened the very essence of British liberty by attempting to overthrow balanced government. Loyalists feared that the rebels masked their own selfish desires to establish authoritarian forms of government\, particularly in the form of extralegal committees\, in the rhetoric of republicanism. This talk will discuss Loyalists’ shared experiences in facing what they viewed as their mistreatment at the hands of the real traitors their nation\, the rebels. It focuses particularly on the experience of Loyalists in New Hampshire and those in Cheshire County. It also will suggest that one of the forgotten elements of the American Revolution was that it was a bitter civil war between American political factions.” \nEvent will be held at the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s Headquarter’s at 246 Main St Keene NH

Boschen \n  \nThe Latchis Theatre of Keene NH is well remembered by many residents of the town of \nMilford and surrounding communities\, who patronized it from it’s opening in 1923 and up until \nit’s closing in the 1980s. Despite a lot of the fun memories\, many are unaware of the theatre’s \nhistory and how it fits into the rich legacy of the Latchis Theatre chain and the legacy of the \nLatchis family. \n  \nOn August 16 at 7pm\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County will host a special one of a \nkind live-documentary that will visually look at how the Keene Latchis Theatre fits in with the \nother theaters built by the Latchis family and the Latchis family’s legacy. The program makes \nuse of photos of the various theaters and reconstructed architectural sketches to visualize what \nthese buildings looked like. In addition relevant history pertaining to the Latchis family\, \nAmerican film history and theatre history will also be included to help put the history of the \nLatchis Theaters into perspective. This will be the third exhibition of the program which was \nperformed first performed at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro VT and then to the Milford (NH) \nHistorical Society. The program will be hosted by film and theatre historian Jonathan A. Boschen\, who assisted with the research for the book “Greek Epic” that documents the history of the Latchis family and the Brattleboro Latchis Theatre. \nAdmission is free. According to Barney\, “These murals go all the way up the stairs… and look like they were painted last week.” The murals depict life on a New Hampshire lake in the 1930s. \n  \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:History meets craft brewing on August 5th at the Wyman Tavern Brew Fest. The event will feature brewers from New Hampshire\, Vermont\, Maine\, and Massachusetts. It will take place on the grounds of the historic Wyman Tavern Museum on Main Street in Keene. \nProceeds from the Wyman Tavern Brew Fest will benefit the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, an organization which has been collecting\, preserving\, and sharing the history of the Monadnock region since 1927. The Historical Society puts on about 150 programs per year such as exhibits\, living history festivals\, summer camps\, teacher workshops\, school visits\, films\, lectures\, and field trips. The most important artifact of the Historical Society is the Wyman Tavern\, built in 1762\, which the Society operates as a period house museum. \nAlan Rumrill\, the director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, said\, “A Brew Fest seems like a good fit for the Historical Society of Cheshire County. DESCRIPTION:Ruth and James Ewing Arts Award \n  \nWe were delighted to learn that the Historical Society of Cheshire County will receive a Ruth and James Ewing Arts Award from the Keene Sentinel and Arts Alive! The award will recognize our collaboration with Marlborough artist Alicia Drakiotes on art exhibits that have conveyed a sense of place. The 64 Miles exhibit in 2013 told the story of the Ashuelot River through the eyes of 44 regional artists\, and the Treasured Places\, Protected Spaces exhibit in 2015 celebrated conservation lands of the Monadnock region. Our collaborations with Alicia Drakiotes have helped local artists reach a wider audience for their work. Look for another art exhibit\, All Around Monadnock\, coming in 2018. \nThe Ruth and James Ewing Arts Awards will be held on July 19 at 5:30 pm at Redfern Arts Center on the Campus of Keene State College. \n

SUMMARY:Hike to the Emery Mill Site on the North Branch River
DESCRIPTION:Jul 9 (Sun) Join Alan Rumrill\, Director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and Jeremy Wilson\, Director of the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, on a short hike of approximately 1.5 miles over uneven terrain to the Emery mill site on the North Branch River. John Emery built a powder keg mill on the North Branch in the 1830s\, and the amazing stone foundations remain today. Alan will share his knowledge of the Emery’s operation and water powered mills that date to the early 1800s. We will visit the Emery home site and hear the story of Stoddard’s famous stone arch bridge\, which is located just downstream from the mill site. The hike will depart 1 p.m. from the tall chain link fence on Route 9\, about ½ mile west of the Stoddard Stone Arch Bridge rest area and historic marker.  Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and bug spray. Back by 3:00 p.m. Cosponsored by the Stoddard Historical Society and the Harris Center. \n

The Wyman Tavern Festival encourages kids and adults to play! Visitors can card wool\, churn butter\, make corn husk dolls\, shuck corn\, spin tops\, or play 18th century games like Shut the Box. \nThe Hinsdale Garrison Company will be camped on the grounds of the Tavern\, sharing their knowledge of family life in the 1700’s through hearth cooking\, sewing\, candle making\, period games\, and care and maintenance of muskets for protection and hunting. \nEighteenth century music is a big part of the Wyman Tavern Festival\, from fife and drum music to period dance. . \nA blacksmith\, a cooper\, a milliner\, a chair rusher\, a spinner\, a weaver and woodworkers will practice their crafts. \nThe Wyman Tavern’s famous rhubarb coolers will be available\, and the Keene High Interact Club will be cooking 21st century lunches. A $5 donation is suggested for the Wyman Tavern Festival and the public is welcome. The Wyman Tavern is located at 339 Main Street in Keene\, New Hampshire.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation: Albert Quigley and the Art of Southwest New Hampshire (1890-1960) \nLance Tucker of Boston College will present a vibrant period of New Hampshire’s art history that resulted from a diverse group of artists who were drawn to the beauty of the land and the people of this region.  Why did so many artists make this area their home and develop a culture that inspired creativity\, healthy competition\, and stunning portraits and landscapes?  Artists such as Thayer\, Benson\, Metcalf\, Parrish\, and Kent are well-recognized for their role in defining American art through the formation of the Dublin and Cornish art colonies.   While the formal colonies were impressive\, so much other talent canvassed the region\, both from itinerant painters and native sons anxious to contribute to this artistic movement.  Albert Quigley is one such artist who assisted and learned from his peers. Quig understood the land and its people and still offers a unique perspective through his brush. Though in his lifetime Quig never received the public recognition he deserved\, his more famous friends understood that Quig was indeed a special artist.  It is a joy to now celebrate this man of many skills and recognize his contributions to art\, music\, and life in Nelson.
