DESCRIPTION:Presentation: Albert Quigley and the Art of Southwest New Hampshire (1890-1960) \nLance Tucker of Boston College will present a vibrant period of New Hampshire’s art history that resulted from a diverse group of artists who were drawn to the beauty of the land and the people of this region.  Why did so many artists make this area their home and develop a culture that inspired creativity\, healthy competition\, and stunning portraits and landscapes?  Artists such as Thayer\, Benson\, Metcalf\, Parrish\, and Kent are well-recognized for their role in defining American art through the formation of the Dublin and Cornish art colonies.   While the formal colonies were impressive\, so much other talent canvassed the region\, both from itinerant painters and native sons anxious to contribute to this artistic movement.  Albert Quigley is one such artist who assisted and learned from his peers. Quig understood the land and its people and still offers a unique perspective through his brush. Though in his lifetime Quig never received the public recognition he deserved\, his more famous friends understood that Quig was indeed a special artist.  It is a joy to now celebrate this man of many skills and recognize his contributions to art\, music\, and life in Nelson.

SUMMARY:Albert Duval Quigley Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Albert Quigley lived in the small New Hampshire hill town of Nelson for almost three decades\, from the 1930s to the 1960s.   Towns such as Nelson were struggling to survive as the Depression caused economic hardship\, agriculture and industry died out\, and small towns off the beaten path were searching for new identities. Quigley’s paintings of the region’s landscapes and people illustrate this story of hardship\, rebirth and revival in the mid-20th century.  He was much more than an artist\, however.  Quigley wrote music\, played the fiddle at local dances and repaired musical instruments.  He worked in the textile mill in neighboring Harrisville and made frames for his own paintings and for the artwork of others.   Although his art did not make him a rich man\, Quigley’s life was filled with rich experiences and he enriched the town of Nelson and the Monadnock Region through his art\, music and connection to the community.  This exhibit will celebrate his art\, his life\, and his artistic depiction of a now vanished place and time.

His presentation will  shed light on the profusion of brick structures in this area in what was one of the three most productive brick-making regions of the state during the 19th century. DESCRIPTION:Travel through 250 years of Jewish History in New England with the Historical Society of Cheshire County on Thursday\, April 6\, 2017.  Ride in style on a charter bus and travel to Newport\, RI\, to visit America’s oldest synagogue\, the Tuoro Synagogue (1763).  While in transit\, watch and discuss an early Jewish film with Keene filmmaker and film historian Larry Benaquist.   Dine for lunch on your own in a Jewish deli and shop in Judaica bookstores and galleries along Harvard Street in Brookline\, MA.  End the day with a tour of a mikveh\, Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters\, a Jewish ritual bath and education center in Newton\, MA.  This bus trip coincides with the Historical Society’s current exhibit\, From Peddlers\, to Shopkeepers\, to Professionals: the History of the Jewish Community in Cheshire County\, on view now through April 21\, 2017.  Reservations required at a cost of $75 per person or $65 for members of the Historical Society of Cheshire County.   The bus will leave from the parking lot of the Society promptly at 6:30am and will return to Keene around 6:00pm.  To reserve\, visit www.hsccnh.org or call 603/352-1895.

SUMMARY:“THE HISTORY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE’S HISTORIC GLASS FACTORIES.”
DESCRIPTION:THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF CHESHIRE COUNTY &  THE YANKEE BOTTLE CLUB PRESENT \nMICHAEL GEORGE\nMichael George will present an hour-long  program on “The History of New Hampshire’s Historic Glass Factories.”  His Powerpoint presentation will outline the history of the factories and their products.  He will also offer a show and tell with a large display of bottles\, flasks and glass factory shards. Attendees are encouraged to bring items for evaluation or discussion. \nMichael was born and raised in NH\, and currently resides with his family in the countryside of New Boston. He has a bachelor’s degree in Marketing Communications from Notre Dame College\, and is currently employed as a Marketing Director. His passion for American glass started at an early age\, as a collector of medicine bottles that were discovered at local auctions or unearthed in old town dumps. Over the years\, his expertise and knowledge for bottles expanded into historical flasks and early American glass wares\, as he researched the production of 18th and 19th century glasshouses throughout New England. \nMichael is an avid collector and antique glass dealer. He conducts regular lectures for historical institutions and produces formal appraisals for collectors or estate settlements. His articles on historical glass have appeared in the publications Antique Bottle & Glass Collector\, Bottles & Extras\, Unravel The Gavel\, and Antiques & the Arts Weekly. In 2012\, Michael served as an organizer and co-curator of the feature exhibit “New Hampshire Glassmakers” held at the Peterborough Historical Society. He is a member of the Federation of Historic Bottle Collectors\, the Yankee Bottle Club\, and the Merrimack Valley Bottle Club. In 2013 Michael served as the Chairman and organizer of the first National Federation of Historic Bottle Collectors show to take place in New England.

Since 2013\, Martha Pinello has led a team of professional archaeologists and community volunteers in researching\, excavating and analyzing artifacts found near the Wyman Tavern built in 1762.  Activities will be hands-on and suitable for adults and children. DESCRIPTION:Where is Alan speaking? \nAlan Rumrill shares the history of the Cheshire Railroad which eventually ran from North Ashburham\, MA to Bellows Falls\, VT. The advent of the railroad changed the nature of life in this area of New England\, making passenger travel faster and more comfortable. It also fueled industrial growth in towns all along the rail line. The Cheshire line\, later acquired by the Fitchburg Railroad and then leased by the Boston & Maine Railroad\, operated for more than 130 years. Learn how this technological marvel of the 1840s impacted the people and economy of this region. \nThis event will be at the Rockingham Free Public Library.
