SUMMARY:“THE HISTORY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE’S HISTORIC GLASS FACTORIES.”
DESCRIPTION:THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF CHESHIRE COUNTY &  THE YANKEE BOTTLE CLUB PRESENT \nMICHAEL GEORGE\nMichael George will present an hour-long  program on “The History of New Hampshire’s Historic Glass Factories.”  His Powerpoint presentation will outline the history of the factories and their products.  He will also offer a show and tell with a large display of bottles\, flasks and glass factory shards. Attendees are encouraged to bring items for evaluation or discussion. \nMichael was born and raised in NH\, and currently resides with his family in the countryside of New Boston. He has a bachelor’s degree in Marketing Communications from Notre Dame College\, and is currently employed as a Marketing Director. His passion for American glass started at an early age\, as a collector of medicine bottles that were discovered at local auctions or unearthed in old town dumps. Over the years\, his expertise and knowledge for bottles expanded into historical flasks and early American glass wares\, as he researched the production of 18th and 19th century glasshouses throughout New England. \nMichael is an avid collector and antique glass dealer. He conducts regular lectures for historical institutions and produces formal appraisals for collectors or estate settlements. His articles on historical glass have appeared in the publications Antique Bottle & Glass Collector\, Bottles & Extras\, Unravel The Gavel\, and Antiques & the Arts Weekly. In 2012\, Michael served as an organizer and co-curator of the feature exhibit “New Hampshire Glassmakers” held at the Peterborough Historical Society. He is a member of the Federation of Historic Bottle Collectors\, the Yankee Bottle Club\, and the Merrimack Valley Bottle Club. In 2013 Michael served as the Chairman and organizer of the first National Federation of Historic Bottle Collectors show to take place in New England.

DESCRIPTION:Where is Alan speaking? \nAlan Rumrill shares the history of the Cheshire Railroad which eventually ran from North Ashburham\, MA to Bellows Falls\, VT. The advent of the railroad changed the nature of life in this area of New England\, making passenger travel faster and more comfortable. It also fueled industrial growth in towns all along the rail line. The Cheshire line\, later acquired by the Fitchburg Railroad and then leased by the Boston & Maine Railroad\, operated for more than 130 years. Learn how this technological marvel of the 1840s impacted the people and economy of this region. \nThis event will be at the Rockingham Free Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Special Event\nSaturday\, March 18\, 2017\nFestival of Color- Holi\n11:00am-12:30pm\nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main St. \nCelebrating the arrival of Spring\, Holi (also called Holaka or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries like India\, Nepal\, and Bangladesh each year in March. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly cultural celebration at the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main Street\, in Keene on Saturday\, March 18th at 11:00am.  Special guest and local artist Bijaya Paul will share the epic story behind the festival\, involving an evil King\, his determined son\, a malicious aunt Holika\, and the Hindu god Vishnu.  Children from the local Indian community will sing a song related to the festival and visitors will have an opportunity to create a Holi-inspired craft to take home.  At noon\, families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other.  The Society recommends that participants wear old clothes\, dress warmly\, and bring a towel to brush off powders at the end of the event.  Cost: $5/person\, $10/family.  A packet of colored powder will be handed out to the first 25 visitors to this event. SUMMARY:2017 NH Film Series: The Happy Time
DESCRIPTION:The Happy Time \n7pm. Keene Public Library\, 30 Winter Street\, Keene\, NH \nDirected in 1952 by Richard Fleischer\, The Happy Time depicts the story of a an eccentric\, free-spirited extended French Canadian family living in the Calvinistic\, sexually repressed environs of Ottawa in the 1920’s.  The Happy Time is based on the 1945 collection of semi-fictional sketches written by Robert Fontaine.  Fontaine was born in Illinois in 1908 to a Scots-Irish mother and a French-Canadian father; when he was very young\, the family moved to Ottawa (but lived for a while in Springfield\, Mass.).  The audience is invited to discuss the film’s depiction of French-Canadian culture after the film\, led by Keene film historian Larry Benaquist.  One could of course ask:  what does The Happy Time have to do with local history in Cheshire County?\, According to the U.S. Census Bureau\, in 2000\, 24.5% of New Hampshire residents were of French\, or French Canadian ancestry\, the largest ethnic group in the state; only Maine has a higher percentage\, at 25%.  The Historical Society of Cheshire County’s film series seeks to communicate local history through film.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 15\, 2017. \nAuthors Rich & Sandra Neil Wallace discuss Blood Brother \n7pm-8pm \nHistorical Society of Cheshire County\, 246 Main St. \nJonathan Daniels\, a white seminary student from Keene\, traveled to Selma\, Alabama\, in 1965 to help with voter registration of black residents. After the voting rights marches\, he remained in Alabama\, in the area known as Bloody Lowndes\, an extremely dangerous area for white freedom fighters\, to assist civil rights workers. Five months later\, Jonathan Daniels was shot and killed while saving the life of Ruby Sales\, a black teenager. The public is invited to learn more about Jonathan Daniels and the latest book about his life on Wednesday\, February 15th at 7pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County following a brief annual meeting for the Society. \nIn Blood Brother\, authors Rich Wallace and Sandra Neil Wallace put their investigative reporting skills to the test. They located the teenagers who protested alongside Daniels\, unearthed never-before-published photographs and journals\, and uncovered the previously unknown roles Jonathan played in major civil rights events. They explore what led Daniels to the moment of his death\, the trial of his murderer\, and how these events helped reshape both the legal and political climate of Lowndes County and the nation. Blood Brother has earned a Parents’ Choice Gold Award\, Booklist Editors’ Choice\, and has been named by the Chicago Public Library a Best of the Best Nonfiction.\nRich Wallace has written more than three dozen novels for children and teens. His first novel\, Wrestling Sturbridge\, was selected by the American Library Association (ALA) as one of the Best of the Best books for the twenty-first century. His recent nonfiction includes the acclaimed Babe Conquers the World\, co-written with his wife\, Sandra.Sandra Neil Wallace had a lengthy career as a news anchor and ESPN sportscaster. She broke a gender barrier in sports by becoming the first woman to host an NHL broadcast on network television. Sandra now writes historical fiction and nonfiction for young readers\, and her titles have been named to state and national awards lists\, including Bank Street College’s Best Children’s Books of the Year\, ALA-YALSA Quick Picks\, and Booklist’s Editors’ Choice. The Wallaces live in Keene\, New Hampshire.
