An illustrated presentation by Senior Historian\, Alan Rumrill\, will help\nyou learn about the history of these railroads and their impact on the people\, businesses\, industries\, and\nlandscape of southwest New Hampshire.

DESCRIPTION:Guided Tour – Patriotic Stroll\nClick here to get tickets\nSeven Keene men who supported the Lexington and Concord alarm and what followed will be discussed as we walk down lower Main Street where five of the seven lived.    Would you have dropped everything and left your family to walk to Cambridge to support the patriot cause?  The British Regulars were not threatening Keene! \nJoin HSCC interpreter Becky Barton as she tries to present both sides of the American Revolutionary war\, Patriot and Loyalist\, as experienced by a few Keene men. Get tickets …. click here \nPoet Rodger Martin and Singer-Songwriter Lenny Solomon will share their art as part of the Our Story: The Art of Community Connections in the Monadnock Region exhibit. Join these award winning artists for an evening of poetry recited by Martin interspersed with performances of Solomon’s songs. \nRodger Martin is the author of five books of poetry including The Sleeping Dogs of Lubec\, The Nemo Poems: A Martian Perspective\, The Battlefield Guide\, The Blue Moon Series\, and For All the Tea in Zhōngguó. He is Director of the Monadnock Pastoral Poets\, and recipient of the 2024 Stanley Kunitz Medal. In addition to his writing\, Martin teaches journalism and creative writing at Keene State College\, and advises The Equinox\, the college’s award-winning student news organization. Martin’s poems\, Late Afternoon Solstice at Aldworth Manor\, Harrisville\, N.H.\, and For Del Rossi’s Homemade Pasta\, are featured in the Our Story exhibit. \nSinger/songwriter/guitarist Lenny Solomon has hand-crafted his music for over forty years. Combining elements of folk\, country\, and blues. Solomon has released four albums of original material\, including Not Life Threatening\, Armando’s Pie\, Maybe Today\, and Under My Hat that combine elements of folk\, country\, and blues. Solomon has won a dozen songwriting awards. DESCRIPTION:History Detective Camp\nThe Robbery of the Savings Bank of Walpole \nSession I: July 7-11 \nSession II: August 4-8 \nBoth sessions run the same program\, children should only sign up for one session. \n(sample of the schedule) \nSeeking junior history detectives who love a good mystery! Detectives will be trained in the techniques used by professionals to solve mysteries at museums. They will then use their skills to assist chief detectives with their investigation into a mysterious case from 1864 when the infamous gentleman thief\, Max Shinburn\, robbed the Savings Bank of Walpole.  Adding to the fun will be plenty of walking field trips to explore the Wyman Tavern\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and Savings Bank of Walpole. \nCamp Purpose and Objectives \nExplored in this course are concepts for linking museums and primary source analysis to student learning about the past.  Participants will gain access to tools and techniques used by museums to discover more about local history.  Each day\, students will learn strategies for discovering clues from the past by: analyzing historic artifacts\, documents\, artwork\, and photographs; creating and following maps; interviewing ‘witnesses’ of history; researching answers to questions; and thinking critically about the history of one’s community. \nAt the center of this course will be a real bank robbery: The Robbery of the Savings Bank of Walpole is based on the real bank robbery that occurred in 1864\, an event that bankrupted the bank for many years.  Junior detectives will be asked to follow Max Shinburn’s case to locate his missing safe cracking tools.  Throughout the week\, students will use their new-found skills to follow leads and solve the case.  They will build their own ‘case files’ of information to take home at the end of the week. \nCamp Format \nMorning sessions will act as detective-in-training workshops. These will consist of reading\, conducting experiments\, making observations\, building\, and working on group projects.  Afternoon detective work will have campers solve the Robbery of Savings Bank of Walpole.  Sessions involve analysis of historical resources\, group work\, visits to the Historical Society and Saving Bank of Walpole\, as well as walking tours around KSC campus and downtown. \nWhat to Bring \nCampers are asked to bring comfortable shoes\, a water bottle\, lunch and snack. \nWho can attend: grades 3-5 \nQuestions? At its heart\, it is a personal inquiry into local history\, the caretakers of special places\, and the importance of remembering\, all while creating a vivid sense of place. \n\nThe film\, directed by Chris Hardee of High Cairn Films\, is based on an essay by Jodi Farwell who farms at Farwell Farm in Harrisville and once lived at Seaver Farm. \nThe screening will be complemented by a short introductory overview of Indigenous and post-settler land use in the region presented by Jenna Carroll\, the Executive Director of the Historical Society of Cheshire County. \n  \nFollowing the film\, Phil Brown\, Bird Conservation Director & Land Specialist at the Harris Center will talk briefly about the 2010 Seaver Farm conservation easement brokered with the support of the Silver Lake Land Trust\, as well as the value of farmland conservation in the region. They will then use their skills to assist chief detectives with their investigation into a mysterious case from 1864 when the infamous gentleman thief\, Max Shinburn\, robbed the Savings Bank of Walpole.  Adding to the fun will be plenty of walking field trips to explore the Wyman Tavern\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and Savings Bank of Walpole. \nCamp Purpose and Objectives \nExplored in this course are concepts for linking museums and primary source analysis to student learning about the past.  Participants will gain access to tools and techniques used by museums to discover more about local history.  Each day\, students will learn strategies for discovering clues from the past by: analyzing historic artifacts\, documents\, artwork\, and photographs; creating and following maps; interviewing ‘witnesses’ of history; researching answers to questions; and thinking critically about the history of one’s community. \nAt the center of this course will be a real bank robbery: The Robbery of the Savings Bank of Walpole is based on the real bank robbery that occurred in 1864\, an event that bankrupted the bank for many years.  Junior detectives will be asked to follow Max Shinburn’s case to locate his missing safe cracking tools.  Throughout the week\, students will use their new-found skills to follow leads and solve the case.  They will build their own ‘case files’ of information to take home at the end of the week. \nCamp Format \nMorning sessions will act as detective-in-training workshops. These will consist of reading\, conducting experiments\, making observations\, building\, and working on group projects.  Afternoon detective work will have campers solve the Robbery of Savings Bank of Walpole.  Sessions involve analysis of historical resources\, group work\, visits to the Historical Society and Saving Bank of Walpole\, as well as walking tours around KSC campus and downtown. \nWhat to Bring \nCampers are asked to bring comfortable shoes\, a water bottle\, lunch and snack. \nWho can attend: grades 3-5 \nQuestions?
