DESCRIPTION:Guided Tour – Patriotic Stroll\nClick here to get tickets\nSeven Keene men who supported the Lexington and Concord alarm and what followed will be discussed as we walk down lower Main Street where five of the seven lived.    Would you have dropped everything and left your family to walk to Cambridge to support the patriot cause?  The British Regulars were not threatening Keene! \nJoin HSCC interpreter Becky Barton as she tries to present both sides of the American Revolutionary war\, Patriot and Loyalist\, as experienced by a few Keene men. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistory Detective Camp\nThe Robbery of the Savings Bank of Walpole \nSession I: July 7-11 \nSession II: August 4-8 \nBoth sessions run the same program\, children should only sign up for one session. \n(sample of the schedule) \nSeeking junior history detectives who love a good mystery! Detectives will be trained in the techniques used by professionals to solve mysteries at museums. They will then use their skills to assist chief detectives with their investigation into a mysterious case from 1864 when the infamous gentleman thief\, Max Shinburn\, robbed the Savings Bank of Walpole.  Adding to the fun will be plenty of walking field trips to explore the Wyman Tavern\, the Historical Society of Cheshire County\, and Savings Bank of Walpole. \nCamp Purpose and Objectives \nExplored in this course are concepts for linking museums and primary source analysis to student learning about the past.  Participants will gain access to tools and techniques used by museums to discover more about local history.  Each day\, students will learn strategies for discovering clues from the past by: analyzing historic artifacts\, documents\, artwork\, and photographs; creating and following maps; interviewing ‘witnesses’ of history; researching answers to questions; and thinking critically about the history of one’s community. \nAt the center of this course will be a real bank robbery: The Robbery of the Savings Bank of Walpole is based on the real bank robbery that occurred in 1864\, an event that bankrupted the bank for many years.  Junior detectives will be asked to follow Max Shinburn’s case to locate his missing safe cracking tools.  Throughout the week\, students will use their new-found skills to follow leads and solve the case.  They will build their own ‘case files’ of information to take home at the end of the week. \nCamp Format \nMorning sessions will act as detective-in-training workshops. These will consist of reading\, conducting experiments\, making observations\, building\, and working on group projects.  Afternoon detective work will have campers solve the Robbery of Savings Bank of Walpole.  Sessions involve analysis of historical resources\, group work\, visits to the Historical Society and Saving Bank of Walpole\, as well as walking tours around KSC campus and downtown. \nWhat to Bring \nCampers are asked to bring comfortable shoes\, a water bottle\, lunch and snack. \nWho can attend: grades 3-5 \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Paddling the North Branch
DESCRIPTION:Join adventurers Kathy Schillemat\, Office Manager of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Al Stoops for a moderately strenuous paddle down the North Branch of the Contoocook River from below the Robb Reservoir dam to North Branch Pond. With luck\, we may see herons\, osprey\, turtles\, beavers\, and maybe even otter or moose. In most places\, the paddling will be easy\, but our route will likely include a short portage over a rocky area\, so come prepared to get your feet wet. One or two vehicles will be available at the endpoint to shuttle paddlers back to their vehicles. \nMeet at 8 a.m. at the Robb Reservoir parking area off Keene-Concord Road in Stoddard. Back between noon and 1 p.m. Bring your own canoe or kayak\, paddles and PFDs for each person in your boat\, lunch\, and plenty of water – and come prepared for sun\, weather\, and biting insects. Space is limited\, and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Cheshire County proudly announces the opening of its featured summer exhibit\, “Our Story: The Art of Community Connections in the Monadnock Region.” This juried art show will officially open with a reception on Friday\, May 30\, 2025\, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.\nThe exhibit showcases the work of over 40 mixed media artists and artisans from across the region. Each artist has created works exploring their personal connections to the Monadnock region. The Society has once again partnered with guest curator Alicia Drakiotes of Marlborough\, NH.\n\n“This will be an exciting exhibition with not only 2D art pieces and photography\, but it will also include fiber work\, pottery\, glass works\, basketry\, metal work and more\,” said Drakiotes. “I am very excited to see this creative endeavor come together this fifth exhibition of artistic work at HSCC. The very first creative exhibit I assisted with was in 2013 the ’64 Miles’ exhibit which honored the Ashuelot River. This current endeavor salutes and incorporates the relationships of the creators with their interactions within the Monadnock Region.”\n\n“Our Story” invites visitors to experience the Monadnock Region through the eyes of its artists\, featuring works that range from depictions of local landmarks and events to abstract interpretations of community relationships. Meet at the tavern and come inside to the Tap Room to learn more about why these three men might have chosen not to fight against mother England.  None of them were tarred and feathered! \nJoin HSCC interpreter Becky Barton as she tries to present both sides of the American Revolutionary War\, Patriot and Loyalist\, as experienced by a few Keene men. DESCRIPTION:Join the Caterpillar Lab and the Historical Society of Cheshire County in a free-exploration program and experience the incredible world of New England caterpillars! Join us Saturday\, May 3rd from 1-2:30 pm at the Historical Society of Cheshire County. This drop-in exhibit will feature a variety of local caterpillar species\, and there will be plenty to see and touch! Educators from The Caterpillar Lab will teach you all about metamorphosis and tell incredible but true stories about the creatures’ strange and surprising adaptations. Some caterpillars may be camouflaged to look like twigs or snakes. Some may have stinging spines or brightly colored baubles. Check out some little-known native critters munching on their food plants right in front of you. Stay for a few minutes or for an hour; you’re sure to see something new! \nThis program coincides with the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s current exhibit Antioch University 60 Years in the Monadnock Region.
