The Manchester & Keene Railroad and its Impact on Nelson

In December of 1878 the first passenger train ran over the Manchester & Keene Railroad from Keene, through Roxbury, Marlborough, Harrisville, Hancock, and Bennington to Greenfield, NH.  This opening followed 20 years of planning, financial difficulties, failed contractors, political upheaval, and construction through difficult terrain.  The road had a major impact on the towns it passed through, but struggled to survive before closing just two generations after it opened.  Learn the story of this engineering marvel and its financial impact on the region.
