Zukes! No Cukes

The Zukes No Cukes exhibit at the Historical Society of Cheshire County delves into the vibrant history of the International Zucchini Festival, a beloved event from the 1980s. Originating as a fundraiser for the Harrisville School, the festival grew into a celebrated occasion, capturing the imagination of the Monadnock Region and beyond. This exhibit showcases the festival’s unique blend of humor and social commentary, inviting visitors to reflect on past and present issues through a zucchini lens. Featuring original photographs, memorabilia, and interactive displays, the exhibit offers a nostalgic journey into the festival’s whimsical spirit.
The exhibit is dedicated to Nancy “Pooky” Hayden, one of the festival’s original organizers. When asked in 1982 whether the festival would become an annual event, Hayden said simply, “I should hope so — it’s a lot easier than selling brownies.” Her comment still captures the spirit of the whole endeavor.

“The Zucchini Festival was, in a practical way, a fundraiser for the Harrisville School or the Harrisville Children’s Center. At a more spiritual level, it was an attempt to take the character of the school, kind of kids being engaged with the natural world or kids being engaged in playful ways with materials. It was an attempt to take that kind of engagement and turn it into a community event for adults.”~David Sobel

Pat: “And the expectations were, we thought it would be okay, but we didn’t think there would be a huge number of people, but the town was mobbed with people. It was incredible.”

Chick: “My thought is it’s probably most worthy of memory in the way it got organized and the community involvement and the creativity of the public.
